    All new buildings should be designed with large roof overhangs. The large overhang provides beauty and protection from the sun, rain and wind. Protection of the doors, windows and siding make for a more durable and comfortable home. Water is the enemy of buildings.

    All homes should be built to accommodate the elderly and disabled. This will be better for everyone. Large wide doorways and hallways make using a cane, walker or wheel chair much easier. Bathrooms or wet rooms need to have flat floors and no shower hump or pan. A flat floor allows for easy access and drains need to provided. Easy to use lever door and faucet handles are easier for the elderly to grip and open. Main floors should include a master bedroom, restroom, shower, laundry and wide walk in closet with few steps to enter. Homes should be designed with aging in place in mind.

      Agreed. The label "Passivhaus" was first coined by building physicists in the 90s, and at least since the late 00s folks have pointed out its weakness as a marketing label, given the connotation of "passive" in English. Phius (formerly the Passive House Institute US) has made the move to brand their certified buildings as "Phius" rather than "Passive House", partly recognizing this issue. What would you rebrand "Passive House" as, if you could wave a magic wand?

    • @pinesthph

      Because the brick walls are original and load bearing, they are 2-3 wythe with no gap for water

    • @avisitorhere
      @avisitorhere 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@pinesthph So, wouldn't a waterproof material on the inside brick wall prevent moisture from escaping the masonry to the interior of the home? So where will that water go? How will the brick dry out? Philly is a pretty cold wet place. There's a freeze thaw cycle. I think you're trapping moisture inside the masonry and 20-30 years from now, that wall will deteriorate.
