Trombone Lessons With Harrison Reed: Lesson 1.5 - How to produce sound on a trombone
มุมมอง 6694 ปีที่แล้ว
My name is Harrison Reed, and I am here to teach you the trombone. In this lesson, I discuss how to produce a tone on any brass instrument, working from very basic concepts to higher level concepts that I had to figure out over the course of two decades. When spoken aloud, and discussed as in this lesson, these concepts seem obvious, but this is a lesson that I never received. My initial instru...

HOW TO TUNE YOUR TROMBONE
มุมมอง 10K9 ปีที่แล้ว
I discuss the issue of tuning an instrument that is essentially a long tuning slide. The main take-away is to realize that tuning your Bb to be "at the bumpers" (ie the hand slide is all of the way in) is not the best solution. Your instrument can be in tune without touching the main tuning slide at all!

      @@deborawagner7657 Hi Deborah. Currently I do not -- I am performing full time on trombone and I wouldn't want to neglect students with them conforming to my crazy schedule. I have taught in the past, always in person, and contrary to this joke video I have an actual method and have helped make some great students even better. Some of the lesson videos on my channel were from the COVID lockdown, where I had time to make some content but it's a very lonely process, setting up mics and cameras and then talking to a lens. Music should always be collaborative, and and the more distance there is between people, the less collaborative it feels. I'm sure there is a great teacher within 50 miles of you!

    These trombones honestly make the most sense to buy for schools/general ensembles. The attachment takes practice, but by buying all F attachments for a school would allow the younger grades to still play the normal tenor trombone, but then they start to use the trigger/compensating system in high school, and even maybe college when and if they move on. It just makes more sense, because all you have to do is not use the trigger. It's not anymore awkward weight wise, I've played one for a bit, and it's the same as a normal tenor trombone without the trigger.

    super helpful. and kind of obvious - once a pro explains it. I assumed the Bb was with the slide locked. It isn't. And should not be. And it makes space for the vibrato on 1st position - up and down.

    What do you use for video/audio and how do you edit the audio?

    • @harrisonreed8718
      @harrisonreed8718 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Steven, how have you been? For these new videos, I am using a Logitech c920 webcam, but I am not happy with the dropped frames I'm getting -- I think I'm just overtaxing my USB bus. For the audio, I'm using a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 interface, high quality XLR cables, a stereo pair of very neutral condenser mics using a distant miking technique, and FL Studio as my DAW. I did not edit the video (you can probably tell!), and for the audio the only editing I used was to run the raw audio through a virtual space in a plug-in -- we both know how bad practice rooms sound! But I'm trying to barely use any of that. No compression, no EQ, no effects. I don't even want to use jump cuts, because I want these videos to be real and down to earth. Thanks for watching!

    • @harrisonreed8718
      @harrisonreed8718 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@stevenholloway7794 Steven, I feel like a newbie too. I think my audio is a lot better than the video I am getting right now...I will eventually have to get a DSLR or video camera that doesn't need to be connected to the computer to record. I believe that Cakewalk is free right now, and that is the DAW I would have used if I hadn't been shown how great FL Studio is -- FL Studio is worth it for the plugins alone. You can't go wrong with the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2. I am so happy with that interface, and the built in pre-amp is perfect for what I'm using it for. If you already have a good set of headphones, I would just get the interface by itself -- you'll want different mics from the vocal one that comes with it.
