I've been posting my vintage "Porsche life" videos outlining some of the things I've had to do to get my car sorted out and performing well. Here's how it did on a 2500 mile road trip with 1100 miles of mountain driving. All the bros showed up with new P-cars and one had a spare supercar in his back pocket so I had to run with some awesome cars, racers, and driving instructors. Spoiler alert: I...

      We have a good chip tuner in the Porsche world named Steve Wong and he gets it dialed in for us. Having an air metering box helps as well over other speed density EFI systems that can't compensate. I know on my old sportbikes the main jet had to be increased maybe dozen sizes when adding the K&N filters.

    I'm very confident the A/C in your vehicle doesn't weigh 80lbs. And since it's germane to the video at the moment you were discussing it, A/C is also an integral part of windshield defogging. A very important part. That you could have used.

    • @3.2Carrera
      @3.2Carrera 18 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Not on this car. It was designed without AC in the original design way back in 1963. Only dry air from the heat exchangers with a blend from the fresh air intake is ducted to the windshield. AC was added later as a separate system and is not ducted to defrost the windshield. Adding an AC system to a car not designed for it made it very heavy, inefficient, and it dumps hot air into an air cooled engine bay. My scale said 78.8 lbs and all of this info is very well documented. Better systems are available now from the aftermarket with tons of options from electric systems to adding condensers in the fenders with fans. Yes these cars are weird. members.rennlist.com/imcarthur/heatercontrols.jpg

      Going sideways keeps the quick jacks parallel to each other when using the factory jacking points on a Carrera 3.2. Going front to back is sketchy because the jacking points in the front are way wider than the rear. We get the same thing on the west coast that folks leave their air cooled at home rather than to bring it out for a tour/drive. It is not unusual that I am the only air cooled out of 40 plus cars at our PCA drives. A well sorted air cooled should have no issue keeping up on public roads as long as people are not totally stupid. Cannot keep up on straight line speed, but claw back once it get curvy. Plus we have more fun as we a driving a slow car fast.

    Porsche did not advise using the front spoiler without adding the rear spoiler. Driving it the way this one is speced actually increases lift at speed.

    • @3.2Carrera
      @3.2Carrera หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, I saw that too. I took it up to speed with just the front and it preserves the steering feel at 120mph and above where before it was none. I did feel the rear getting light and a little wag of the steering wheel confirmed this. So I think the front only is OK provided the car is moving somewhat in a straight line and doesn't have to make any drastic course changes. For short bursts on a highway not hitting top speed, it's probably OK. But if I'm in Germany hitting 120 for 30 minutes between towns I would highly recommend the rear spoiler to match.

    • @3.2Carrera
      @3.2Carrera 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I had Ollies in Lake Havasu, AZ do the machine work. My crank was in excellent condition so all it needed was a polish. My case did need a line bore though. One thing to consider is the main bearing quality these days and consistency of the thickness. I do see there's bearings available for ground cranks out there but don't have a lot of information since I didn't need them. The main thing is to measure the crank and bolt the case together after machine work to measure the journals along with each bearing's thickness. There will be variances between each one so mix and match to get it in spec and hope you can find a match. The bearings these days are a bit loose (small) so for me I had my mains and rods coated. Good luck!

The car lives at speeds of 40-70. I'm not breaking any speed records, so having the spoiler wouldn't make any appreciable difference. My spoiler is now wall art.

    Great explaination on the air system of these flat 6's...Porsche was way ahead of their time.

    Did your fan come off ok as my fan is stuck on!..I dont want to tap the shaft as it might damage the alternator.

      Yes, it slid right off. It was a newer alternator so no corrosion formed on the shaft yet.

    Good idea with the volt display in the cig light. Maybe its the bushes in the alternator thats worn out. You can just replace thoses.

    Aerodynamics pah, the rear whale tail spoiler is just so cool, an 80's icon.

    If I had gotten a 3.2 with a G50 trans, instead of the 1983 911 SC that I did get, I'd probably still have it. That 1983 was a money pit, and there should've been a class-action lawsuit filed against Porsche for the broken head studs that were problematic for that generation. Plus, that 915 transmission was the absolute worst transmission I've ever owned. My '83 was burgundy with a tan and burgundy interior, 7 & 8 inch wheels, and yes, it had a turbo tail. Beautiful car, but never again...

      Yes, I'd be very pissed too. Even today people pay all the money for these cars on the auction sites only to have their backs broken after they look the car over after delivery. My '89 actually had 3 broken studs, but since I bought from a friend I got it cheap enough to have plenty left over for a complete rebuild. The aftermarket has really stepped up with shoring up the weak links of the car.

      @@3.2Carrera I had half the head studs on the driver's side snap before 100K miles. Got the engine rebuilt for $12K, which was a "bargain". I've read that they fixed this issue with the 3.2 by using turbo head studs, so that's a plus.
