Grab your sketchbook and pencil and follow along as Rich Torrey demonstrates the thinking behind the simple process that will have you drawing any character you choose easier and better than you ever thought possible!
Born in Los Angeles, Rich began his career as the creator of 2 internationally syndicated comic strips (Hartland and Pete & Clete) before becoming an award winning children's book author/illustrator.
And for the past 30 years he's taught thousands of people how to draw cartoons using the same simple, effective process he's used in his work.
Now he brings that process to the Level Up Cartooning Channel.

Mickey Mouse | Steamboat Willie | Drawing Lesson
Join us this week for our Mickey Mouse \ Steamboat Willie drawing lesson. Kids, teens, and adults will discover their hidden drawing skills as they follow the simple formula for drawing Mickey Mouse as Steamboat Willie.
In this video I break the lesson into three parts.
•In Step 1: we draw the roadmap of Mickey Mouse in our scene from Steamboat Willie
•In Step 2: we rough out the features of Mickey Mouse in our scene from Steamboat Willie
•In Step 3: we level up, drawing the final details of Mickey Mouse in our scene from Steamboat Willie

00:00 Intro
01:41 Step1-we draw the roadmap of our Steamboat Willie scene.
04:12 Step 2-we rough out the features of our Steamboat Willie scene.
06:42 Step 3-we draw the final details of our Steamboat Willie scene.
You'll notice I use colored pencils in the first two steps. I do so to make it easy to see each separate step in the process. While you're free to draw with any pencil, pen, marker, or digital pad you wish, I recommend keeping it as simple as possible. And it doesn’t get more simple than a pencil and paper.
You’ll also notice I don’t spend time coloring the characters during the video.
That’s because I want the focus to be on teaching the step by step formula of drawing that character-allowing you to draw them over and over again-improving each time.

Hi, my name is Rich Torrey, and I teach kids, teens, and adults an easy to follow, step-by-step process for drawing cartoon characters using the same simple process I’ve used for the past 30 years as a professional illustrator and cartoonist. It’s a process that will have you drawing even the most difficult characters easier and better than you ever thought possible.
If you’ve struggled with some of the other how-to-draw videos on the internet-it’s because they actually teach you how to draw backwards-starting with those final details.
Good drawings don't happen by magic. It's a process, and I’m here to show you that process!

Welcome back Rich. I hope you and your family had a good trip to Disneyland. Also, awesome drawing tutorial. 👍
Thank you, Robert. Walked about 7 miles a day, made some fantastic memories...and then came down with Covid the last two days. Oh well...it was worth it!
You are welcome Rich. I am glad you and your family had a great time. Also, I couldn't agree more, the Co-Vid19 years were not a fun time.
Enjoyed this classic, thanks for the tips.
Awesome! Glad you liked it, Rick. Hope you found it helpful.
And the original Betty Boop was black
I love this drawing a while back i spent a long time working on it and it worked out really well ive been following you and learning everything you teach and ive gotten so much better the past year thank you so much for everything 🙂
Wow, that is so nice of you to say, esabella! You really made my day. Keep drawing my friend!!!
I love thie channel
Thank you so much, AmounHarry! That really means a lot!
Those illustrations are incredible. Congratulations on completing this project!
thank you very much. I really appreciate that.
I’m making a children’s books too called buntastic family it’s about the mcbunny family that gains superpowers from cosmic rings and it follows two bunny sisters and there siblings
Fantastic! So happy to hear, Fan-Nimater! Keep going. Something to think about. While you don't ever want to copy others, it can be very helpful to be aware of what is currently out there in the marketplace that is succeeding...Going to school on what about it that is connecting with audiences and why it is working can teach you a lot. The trick is to then use that as you are creating your own thing. Just something to consider.
🎊🎊👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽🎊👏🏽🎊🎊👏🏽🎊🎊
Thank you, Maya! I hope you found it helpful!
That’s awesome
Looks great :) 👍
Thank you!
That is the best piece of advice I have ever heard.👍❤️
Thank you, Robert! That means a lot. It certainly changed my life at the time.
You are welcome Rich. 🙏
I know this is a channel for learning to draw, but I definitely would like to see a tutorial on the writing process. 👍
I Robert. I've thought about talking about the writing process, at least in how I have approached it. Still working it out. In the meantime, just survived my first Disney trip with grandkids which included getting COVID. Some great memories but I'm still recovering!
Drawing hands was the hardest thing for me
You are not alone. Hands are probably the number one sticking point for artists. After 30+ years I still need to sharpen my hand drawing skills with focused practice.
Dogs are really fun to draw ❤
I agree, Yousif! Try experimenting with different sizes and shaped bodies as well as face and ears. There's no wrong way.
Nice. I could never even draw that good. Cool stories tho
Thank you, NikkiDar-g1o!
bro ur content helped me learn how to draw my doodles r actually easy to make oht what they r 😂
Cool😊
Thanks
You're very welcome CappyPug!
🔥🔥
Thank you! Hope it helps!
I watched Astro Boy when it came out in 1963, and, being used to Western cartoons, was a bit freaked out by some of its content. Only recently did I discover that I had been watching the very first anime ever to appear on American TV!
Actually the first anime was called blunt sword. It was drawn with chalk and was less than 5 minutes long
Wow, just looked that up! crazy that it was all but forgotten until it was rediscovered in an antique shop in 2008. Going to have to dig deeper. thank you Trigger!!!
@@LevelUpCartooning no problem. I'm a nerd so I know a bunch of random trivia
@@Trigger_productions_mato I appreciate you sharing it. Thank you!
Can you draw Beetlejuice from the Beetlejuice cartoon from 1989
Hi Hector! I'm putting that one on the list. Great suggestion!
Great character
Thank you, Sue!
I remember reading that book when I was a kid!
I enjoyed your books through my childhood , thank you for entertaining and teaching at the same time ❤
So nice of you to say, Yousif. That means a lot.
Not to correct you but most Western/American studios, even Disney, would animate characters and other objects, if the movement is at medium speed, at 12 drawings a second which would be 1 drawing every 2 frames, since there are 24 frames in each second of movie film. Most American animators consider a cartoon to be "full animation" if the drawing/cel rate is at least 12 per second. Animating a character or other objects at 24 drawings per second is called "shooting on ones" whereas animating a character or other objects at 12 drawings per second is called "shooting on twos". This mainly applies to Western/American Studios. For Japanese studios, characters or other objects would be animated at 8 drawings per second, which would translate to "shooting on threes". Anime from Japanese studios are rarely shot on ones or twos as cartoons would be done by American studios.
thanks Jacob. So what would have been used for something Inspector Gadget? By the look of it, it seems like it was shot in threes.
That's probably about right. That's usually associated with Anime.
@@jacobzeier Yes. which is exactly what it looks like.
i would read that book now and i’m 15😭
I think kids would really like this lol
Thank you. I still have the urge to dust it off and try again.
That is beautiful art Rich, it is too bad that the publishers rejected it.😞
Thank you, Robert. It's a sometimes painful part of the process...in the end you learn it only makes you better.
You are welcome Rich. I cannot agree with you more.
That is alot of rejection letters, it kind of reminds me of Stephen King's anecdote in his book On Writing about the ones he got when he first started out. Speaking of books, a drawing tutorial sugestion for October, Count Moundshroud from The Halloween Tree. 🎃🌳
Wow, I had forgotten about that. I've just finished my videos for October as I have to be away for a few weeks in the next month. But that is going to be at the top of the list for next year, Robert! By the way, I kick off this October with your suggestion of Bill Cipher!
Cool, thank you Rich. Listen, if you can't use all of my suggestions, you can save them for next year. Also, have a safe and pleasant trip.
I love one piece
It really is an amazing series, created by an amazing guy.
Thank you for your contributions. I enjoy your work. What made you want to do children's books and not move into other genres?
Probably because i am a visual person. I think in pictures. I guess comic strips and picture books were a logical extension of that. They just made sense to me more than all text.
Dude! I grew up reading those kids books! Thats so cool!
Looks like Carl had a little too much Spice Melange
or too much Fenton's creamery
Idk man, I like to meld the collar of my shirt into my skin on Sundays.
I NEEDED THIS i may have been drawing basically all of my life but i still have ALOT of room to improve, i think everyone can improve in their art no matter who you are! (Trying a new art style or improving your current art style)
Thanks Yanro. Hope it helps! Yes, I'm 30+ years into it and still need to improve!
Thank you
