Copy a board from measurements
มุมมอง 2762 หลายเดือนก่อน
In this video we show how to copy a board from measurements, using the Guidelines Wizard. We cover two methods: - Either the measurements are taken by measuring the distances, from the back or from the front, along the developed curve of the bottom (bottom stringer). - Or they are taken by measuring the distances along a straight line.

How come I can’t get this blank white? It won’t change to white stays teal?
hi! can i in shape3d unfold the outer shell into a plane bottom and top, and thus get a pattern vector for cutting pvc on cnc... for perfect sandwich wrapping? thanks!
Yes, Shape3d can export (or print in the Pan mode) the developed surface of the board and of the constant depth layers.
👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
Bonjour, peut-on utiliser la première méthode avec juste la version design? ou je dois avoir la pro au minima?
Oui il faut une license Design Pro
This video is good. I suggest you delete the old one.
Yes we will.
I can extend the channel past the tail, the menu option "Map on extended bottom" doesn't exist.
This video is so good! This is what I should have watched years ago. It really provides the basics and details of how curves and control points work (or are locked) in various views in design mode. This video will take you from zero to hero.
After modeling, is it possible to save it in stp or stl for further transfer to processing by a CNC machine?
The 3D Export option (www.shape3d.com/Products/ExportOption.aspx) allows exporting the designs in the STL (meshes), DXF or IGES (nurbs surfaces) formats.
@@shape3d362 Great! Thank you! exactly what is needed!
Nice!
I wish it was this easy, I can't get the same result with the current program, this looks much simpler, my 3d layers are behaving very different and more complex
There must be some options set wrong. You can send me your file at thomas@shape3d.com if you want me to check.
Perfect timing with an up coming project
That’s a normal wing, how about the bump wing too? Please.
What do you mean by bump wing?
@@shape3d362 The best example of a surfboard with a bump wing would be Tom Curren’s Red beauty. Where wing is a lot more mellow and not as noticeable or pronounced as as a regular wing. Anyways thank you for the upload 👍🤙 my apologies on having to give you more work.
OK I see. That will work just the same @@Andrew-dm8mk
@@shape3d362 yes of corse it’s just a question of aesthetics more than anything. But yes the function is exactly the same.
Hey! Can I use this to redesign an old slalom board's nose to a more modern design? I know how long te board ought to be but I dont know how to draw the shape - whether pointy or curvy.
Sure you can. Send me an email to contact@shape3d.com if you have any doubt.
Thank you. Cheers!
Hello! I have a question regarding copying boards from pictures: When you load the image for the outline, should you use a picture from the bottom or the deck of the surfboard? In this example you used the bottom, but depending on the rocker both could be very different. Should I go for one, either, or make an average of both?
I would say that what matters more is to take the picture from as far as possible to limit the distortions. I usually use the bottom picture just to get the plugs position.
This Tutiorial makes things clear, especially coming from an AKU background! Keep em coming in this type of EDit Shape 3dx... Thanks
Classic Bowie
You should precise you need a pro license to do that...
Yes, sorry.
nice one. When it says mapping on y and z axis how should we understand this, what is mapped on y and what is mapped on z?
The term Mapping may be poorly chosen. Originally the 3D layers were always placed on the original shape: the ends of the slices of the layers are glued to the slices of the board. So we used the term mapping. But with the Free layers we can now choose how we fix the ends of the slices of the layers in Y and Z: either stuck to the original slice, or fixed to a curve, or Free. Y mapping = Otl Int curve or Otl Ext curve -> We use a curve to set the size of the slices Z mapping = Side Int curve or Side Ext curve -> We use a curve to set the height of the edges of the slices.
I still get a kink in the Tail of the board when making channels with layers. Map on ext. rail does nothing. Very frustrating.
Is the Rail point defined on the slices? Please send me your file at thomas@shape3d.com if still doesn't work.
@@shape3d362 Hi Thomas, Yes the rail point is defined on the slices. I also tried on the standard surfboard file. Same issue with the kink when extending the layers to zero on the tail. I will send you my file. Thanks for your help.

Sim, em breve terá mais!
Free 3d layer is not working for the moment, still ask for a license PRO.
If you just purchased a license you need to activate it in the License menu of Shape3d. And if you had SHape3d Lite installed before, make sure you uninstall it and install the full version instead (download at www.shape3d.com/Update/UpdatesHistory.aspx) before you activate your license in the menu Licence / License manager.
Does this sandwich also make the resulting shape shorter, because the sandwich is also on the Nose and Tail? Unfortunately we can not use the CNC of Shape3d because we have Rhino which controlls the CNC. Do you foresee any possible issues with the export to Rhino. I.e. is there something we should take into account with our 3dx model to avoid any pitfalls?
No it doesn't, this is an approximation indeed. You can also use the option "Add/Remove thickness" in the menu Components -> Action, which does reduce the length. This option only works well on simple shapes though, on complicated shapes with 3D layers you can get some distortions you'll need to correct. Note that most CAM softwares have the option to remove a fixed thickness, and if not you can always remove the sandwich thickness setting a smaller tool diameter...
@@shape3d362 Thank you for your feedback. You mention, that this in approximation. Which I understand because of the nature of the problem of parallel curves or surfaces. But does your approximation apply on the real 3d shape so on the surface normal or on the slice curve normal. What I want to say is that in the tail and nose the actual thickness reduction in the slice view will be different, i.e. considerably more, because of the angles of the slice to the direction of the surface normal, and does your approximation account for it?
@@schobihh2703 Not when you use 3D layers.
Appreciate the continued support and updated tutorials 🤙
For all options ? Before design pro is included.

Aloha, Just bought the shape 3dx ... I been trying to do a beack nose but I am having problems jajajaja this video helps but I am still strugling ... ...Am I supposed to use a base design from a template ?? or could I make my own ? I dont see how can I make the flat deck all the way to the nose ... thanks for the video and the support I hope you guys can help me pura vida mahalo
Hi Miguel, You have a Design license without the Pro option, so you can edit the Deck 1 curve like in this video. But you can design the slices with a flat deck without problem. I recommend you watch the other more basic videos and read the manual. There are also other video tutorials like this one for example th-cam.com/video/dFSo8zaTRds/w-d-xo.html

hello, could you share me shape3d file of this board please? BR
Here it is: www.shape3d.com/Warehouse/Board.aspx?Board=7229

@@lukmo7999 it must be because you don't have the Pro option, right? You can open it without the 3D layers then.
This is so cool! Could you make an Album Twinsman Model? Very interested to try with this software. ✌🏻🤙🏻
Hi Chris, I won't copy the Twinsman as it is a trademark model. But you can try using the same methode as in this video! It won't be harder.
@@shape3d362 I’ll do my best. The rails on it are kind of flat on the top so I will need to understand the the software a bit better before I attempt it. Thanks for your help. Thoughts on scanning with iphone lidar? Cheers.
@@chrismorton1725 check this file with a flat deck: www.shape3d.com/Warehouse/Board.aspx?Board=2694 then add small wings and a fish tail and you're good!
I doubt the lidar on iphone gives clean enough results on a surfboard. I don't have an iphone, but if you have one you can try and send me the result. I'll check if it's clean enough to be imported into Shape3d.
@@shape3d362 thanks so much for all your help and suggestions! I’m based in Sydney Australia and have found a few places nearby that will cnc listed on your website. Incredibly helpful. 🙏🏻
Something to note here, a photo of a surfboard, especially a longboard, will absolutely be distorted due to the rocker and focal length of the camera. If you are going to use this method I would also want to know the critial dimensions of the photographed board and input those first, and just use the photo as a visual guide.
Absolutely
It would be great if you could slow your mouse movements down, bit quick for us going from AKU to 3DX as it's a complex program Thanks!
OK, I'll do that for the next videos!
this is amazing i can't wait to be able to use this technology
I have to say that is pretty cool
Where this buy ?
peel-3d.com/
Wow, I thought the import of IGES would be more natural. Is the IGES Format so incompatible to the S3D Model? Or why does it happen? Can I already prepare the Nurbs Model so to avoid distortions?
Hi Jorg, there're infinit ways of designing nurbs surfaces. The importation only works if the structure is similar to the way we design boards in Shape3d: with parallel cross sections... and avoid trimmed surfaces. But the importation can be perfect then! There are distortions here because of the vertical rail; I just wanted to show how to correct them in case it happens. You can send me your iges files by email if you have any problem with the importation into Shape3d.
So to copy the outline always using the picture of the bottom instead of the top deck right?
Both work! A picture of the bottom just gives you the fin placement in addition to the outline.
@@shape3d362 Copying the shortboards outline I figured out that sometimes the nose is narrower on the top deck picture compared to the bottom picture
@@diegogorrieri Yes, that's a perspective problem. To avoid that you need to take the picture from as far as possible.
Please do a video on how to design rails from a picture next time. Thanks!
Awesome!!!
I've been trying to copy an asym i made but would like to see how to use measurements for both outline sides. Can you do this on shape 3d?
You can create or import guidelines for the outline curves of each side. You can't use the guidelines wizard though.
This is such a great program!
