L already knew it was someone in the region. but killing someone he thought was a police officer was a bad move. it showed to L that he was just as bad even if he was killing criminals, it showed that Kira wasn't above killing the innocent. even if Light was caught, if he stuck to only criminals, they would have not gone after him as hard. once you kill a cop, the whole police force will be after you even if they all have to die to do it.

I mean yeah. If Light didn't take the bait here the whole rest of the series wouldn't have happened. They still wouldn't know if Kira is just one person or some sort of organization and they certainly wouldn't be certain whether or not this was supernatural. But most importantly of all they'd have no idea that Kira was in the Kanto region of Japan. The whole series just doesn't happen from here. Raye Penber is never killed nor is Naomi so Light and L never meet.

It would have been smart to completely ignore him. But if he did, then people wouldn't believe someone is actually passing judgement, which is one thing Light's goal needs, to scare people out of doing crimes. It would have been better if he didn't do it immediately though, for his own sake.
