What is Defold Game Engine and should you use it in 2024?
มุมมอง 1.5Kหลายเดือนก่อน
Defold is a great engine but it has not been recognized by many developers so I tried to introduce what is Defold and why it's a good option to use as a game engine. Here is the link to the asset portal: defold.com/assets/ Please like and subscribe :)

Thank you very much. Thanks to you, I started to understand Defold better.
What are the 3d features that Defold lacks and is possible to make a first or third person shooter or hack and slash? I'm thinking of trying it and I have been playing around with Blender and Blockbench.
It is possible to make a fps shooter, but the way to go would probably be a stylized game to avoid high resolution models etc. I am not sure how realistic you can get with Defold (limit is the developer's skill mostly) but it would not be too easy compared making the same game on the many engines out there and probably not as performant. Defold let's you take the control of the engine to a great extend compared to others so maybe using it would unlock some more possibilities
@@AsatteGames alright, well the style of models I'm shooting for are retro in a way. Like half life, quake 1,2 or 3 or classic Wow style, just my lack of skill for everything is my problem cause I'm just starting. I figured if I wanted more details models and stuff I'll go with unreal engine.
@orca1361 if your goal is to have a realistic fps, I'd recommend Unreal too and it would have a lot more tutorial as well. Engines are just tools so choose whichever you need
@AsatteGames good point, I'll check both out and see which works best. My idea so far is a fantasy fps just undecided on boomer shooter like Dusk or early 2000's like Fear or Clive Barker's Jericho with low poly models.
@orca1361 that kind of game should be fine to make with Defold. I'm not sure if there is a tutorial on it yet though

Great job! Thank you. 👍✌
Thank you for the tutorial!! I was not using the debug function until now xD Also, my player collision is set to kinematic, but the dynamic wit zero gravity and locked rotation is indeed a very simple solution. Testing it right now to compare
How did it go?
@@AsatteGames The dynamic collision with zero gravity and locked rotation feels better than my previous collision with a script. The fact that it removes a chunk of code is a nice plus. For now I will test the dynamic collision mentioned in your tutorial :)
@@sindelio Glad to be help. I was worried that simple approach would not work for special cases but it is nice know it works for someone. Will try to upload more complex collision tutorials as well ☺
@@AsatteGames Often simplicity is the best approach. However please do post more tutorials, those help me a lot in getting better at the game design process. What are you working on yourself, aside from the tutorials?

As someone who has used all three engines and released products with them, my personal evaluation is more objective: U D G lightweight: 1 5 3 features: 5 2 4 easy to use: 4 2 5 2D: 5 3 4 3D: 5 1 3 assets: 5 1 3

Hey great start and and got a sub from me! We need more resources for Defold, so please keep up the good work!
i prefer frameworks like Phaser 3
I did not know about this one, thanks. Is it easy to use JS for development?
It is really hard to predict if Godot will be persistant free to use in the upcoming years. It depends on a lot of conditions. But Unity literally sucks. They depreicated a lot of effort made by personal game developers. It goes without saying that is betrayal.
I agree with Unity part as a former Unity user, they literally did the Breaking Bad meme (they and their ego). For Godot, as it's open source it is likely to stay free unless the foundation team decides to make a commercial engine over it and stop developing the open source one for quick cash (I want to believe nobody is dumb enough to think this would be a great idea but as Unity digged it's grave, with human greed anything is possible). So Godot is likely to stay free but I don't think it's able to use in a smart way all the hype and support (of both investors and skilled developers) for the future of the engine. Too bad that with better management, it could really shine even brighter.
@@_I-OvO-I_ It's true that it will be forked if Juan decides to monetize it but that does not mean the fork will be able to keep the interest on the engine alive (as there are 2 major forks on it but they don't seem to be doing that well). So, like any project (foss or not), being forgotten is possible with Godot as well. Though, I highly doubt such thing will happen anytime soon
Thank you :D

this is just I need thanks :)
If Defold is FOSS, how are they providing export to game consoles and other systems? Maybe they are covering the cost of the license, I assume you would need for this. Otherwise, other FOSS software has no excuse not to have these options.
Defold is indeed not open source but source available. But, I would argue they live up the name of FOSS more than open source projects and that's why I like Defold. Of course if they were to do a Unity move and change their license to make the user pay, my view on it would change. Still, it is nice t o enjoy the open source benefits (no charge, loyalty etc.) while enjoying the benefit of non-open source projects (free console port). Still, since it is not FOSS, it carries some risk to use it so I would understand if one to hesitate using it, I personally like it though
@@AsatteGames So how are they covering the cost for all the console porting?
@@_I-OvO-I_ They provide you with the APIs nedded to port the game if you are a licensed developer for consoles. Then you have to do the process yourself, but honestly it should not be too complicated as long as you understand APIs and coding. I imagine they are partners with console companies to be able to do this. This is a big W for Defold and the main reason I chose it for my current project.
Thank you! 👍✌
Faydalı 👍
i prefer frameworks like monogame
Frameworks are really great as they grant more freedom to its users. But I still prefer to use a game as having an editor makes the development process. I used a Java framework for game development long ago (don't remember the name, could be some sort of SDK) and at that time the limitation was only my imagination (and coding skills of course 😅) unlike how it is using a game engine
Great video
You can download the project I use in this video at: asatte-games.itch.io/defold-spritesheet-for-animation The SpriteSheet I used can be found on cupnooble.itch.io/sprout-lands-asset-pack .
I tried defold and found it pretty frustrating. If you are making current tutorials i will definitely watch. Current frustrations include camera and collision. Collision being the first pain point and camera setup to control being the breaking point.
I just uploaded a tutorial on using sprite sheets for animation. I'll make sure to make tutorials on camera and collisions as well
@AsatteGames I did see that and I'll be taking a look later. I think more up to date videos would be great. It's quite hard to find anything current and dedicated to a specific topic.
I figured it out after a while, and then it clicked for me. I'm developing an RPG with turn based combat, and I chose Defold mainly becase tbe ability to export to consoles without cost. I think Defold will only grow from here, so it's worth investing if you are thinking long term
@@sindelio Glad it clicked for you. It became more trouble than it was worth to me. Using something that works versus having to struggle just to get the basics isn't worth the frustration.
@@sindelio Will you have a devlog, I would like to follow your progress. I'm interested in JRPG/turn based combat.
Me libGDX in 2024: 😮💨☕
Frameworks are brilliant but I like Game Engines (insert meme)
As for frameworks I like Raylib. For engines defold or Godot. And I'm trying out Bevy.
I wanted to try defold if it at least supported c++ or c#
@@AmirSina.R I see some people using Defold with C++ but even they do not recommend doing so 😅. If you know python, Lua should not also be too difficult but it's all about preferences
Look forward to the future defold tutorials!! 👍👍👍👍
