What happens when I'm offended?
In this video I talk about judgment, the judgment we have for ourselves and for other people.
It can be devilishly difficult to remove ourselves from the stories of the people around us. Your mind likes to keep things the way they've always been. But eventually, questions like these become unbearable to indulge.
When my wife is mad, is it actually my fault?
If my kids don't learn to behave well, is it because I'm not good enough?
You get to choose for you. They get to choose for them.
This is nothing new. My breakthrough came through identifying the feeling I wanted to avoid, and making small, consistent efforts to be aware of my own thoughts.
Shoutout to @adam_bogicevic for the conversation that led to this video.
Shoutout to my amazing wife, Katie. Love you, babe.

September of 2020: The Indirect Path
มุมมอง 603 ปีที่แล้ว
#shakycamera #listentomyvoiceignorethecamera I spent all of my twenties in school. I don't have a neat explanation for why this is how I spent my time, it just seemed right for me. However, telling people that I was planning to be a music professor always felt off. Becoming a professor was a possible career, but not one I had really ever chosen for myself out of genuine interest. The reality is...

September 8th, 2020: Courage to Dream, Courage to Heal
มุมมอง 653 ปีที่แล้ว
This is a video I recorded spontaneously on September 8th of 2020. A little background about this video. I had a vague impression at the time that I would post it on TH-cam at some point. I didn't know what it would be good for. I went through some very personal challenges in 2020, like many of us. I struggled that whole year to make progress on my dissertation, and finally finish my degree. Wh...

"Your mind creates all kinds of thoughts every day. Some of them are useful, some of them are not. Some [of the unuseful thoughts] are very cleverly disguised as useful ones." Well-said!

"The changes you can make with just small, consistent efforts are so astounding, so remarkable." I really like that you said that. I feel like I need to be reminded of that a lot.

Spot on! With identifying external pressures to pursue academic expectations. Latching personal worth to that. I connected to this in so many ways. Thanks for putting it out into the world.

Thanks for watching and sharing, Liz! It's been a while! It helps to identify what is happening inside. I spent a lot of time worrying about everything around me in the classical music and academic worlds. Letting that go is definitely a process.

:54 to skip past me talking about my daughter and why we have animals crackers in my office (hint, this room is also our pantry :)

*insert missing tie-in about positive reenforcement being more effective than negative feedback here. I intended to have some kind of reference back to the animal crackers at the end, but I also intended the video only to be five minutes long, so there's your behind the scenes glance. You're welcome. ;)

This was so insightful! I've been trying to research for a TH-cam video that really educates the ideas in this vid! 👏Your content for sure is like the vids from Dr. Ethan. Dr Ethan's tips are useful and I actually learned a lot for school! I suggest you watch his TH-cam out and give the med student a like! ➡️ #DoctorEthanStudentDoctor
