    Are the coils electrically isolated from mains voltage? Ie. will you get zapped if you touch the coils placing steel inside the forge

    Fantastic! Your design is superb and build quality A1. If you would like to make another I will buy it. Let me know the price, please.

    woah... not wearing a respirator when dry cutting those insulating fire bricks? bad bad bad for your lungs. Those things are made of Ceramic and Crystalline Silica. Ever hear of Silicosis? Lung Cancer? It does the same to your lungs that asbestos does. Aside from that, good video on making a heat treating oven. Sucks that electricity costs between $0.37 and $0.47 kWh here in Commiefornia.

    Great work indeed! I wonder what type of insulation brick/material you have used and what is their cost? This looks the same material that we see in commercial furnaces.

    Hi, nice work, I'm very interested to build something similar but bigger and for pottery. is it lightweight concrete block?

    • @EvenTheDogAgrees
      @EvenTheDogAgrees 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's a K23 lightweight insulating fire brick, which is resistant up to 2300°F (1260°C). There's also K26 firebricks, which take it up a notch to 2600°F (1427°C).

    Hope your lungs are alright man. Anyone working with soft firebricks, please wear a respirator. The bricks contain crystalline silica which is a known carcinogen when inhaled.

    What are the dimensions on the kiln volume-wise? How much watt do you use? What thickness kanthal wire did you use? Im calculating a kiln, the book im reading has a chart, it says i need about 3500 watt per cubic feet. The design: 15 amp * 230 = 3450 watt. K23 brick is 230mmx114mmx64mm. A foot is 302,5mm. If you put the K23 brick on its side, and each brick has on one side a brick that it connects to, that leaves an area of 166x166 mm. A square foot is 302,5x302,5mm. 1/(166^2/302.5^2)=3.32 feet high a kiln for 15 amps. 302,5*(1/(166^2/302.5^2))=1004,5 mm high. A brick is 1004,5/114=8.81 bricks high. So if you take it 9 bricks high. Its 4*9=36 bricks for the walls. R=V/A= 230/15=15,33 ohm. So now you need Kanthal wire, 15,33 ohm total to get the 3450watt drawn at the wallsocket, so you wont get more than 15amps and stay below 16 amps so the fuse wont blow. You can devide it in sections that add up to 15.33 ohm in total. So if you were to make the kiln in 3 sections each 3 blocks high, the unit needs to be 15,33/3=5,11 ohm each section. You can make 4 heating sides, that will get you 5,11/4= 1,28 ohm each. To get the right size wire you need to choose which wiresize will fit the side, remember the bigger the diameter the longer it lasts. Taking 1,5mm 0,764 ohm/m will get you 1,28/0,764=1,68m per side; 1,2mm 1,19ohm/m will get you 1,28/1,19=1,08m per side; 1mm 1,72ohm/m will get you 1,28/1,72= 0,74m per side. Of course you still need to coil the wire around some round (wooden)bar and then make some turns , remember it has to fit in between 166mm and 3*114mm and still have some room for edges an some "meat" to hold the coils in. How you configure from there is for you (the reader), to decide. Get some ceramic terminal blocks to connect the wires. The rest of the recipe is in this video. I am looking to design a "sword kiln" that can do swords up to a meter in length. Greetings, Jeff p.s. Dont forget to buy 3 s-type thermocouples, 3 40A solid state relays, 3 MAX31865 shields, and an arduino with cables, usb (printer cable) , and 230 to 9 volt 5,5/2,1mm converter on aliexpress. Once you know how to configure arduino you can make it really precise and if the heat on the top gets higher that the bottom, you can fine tune untill you get an even temperature. DO SHOP AROUND TO GET THE BEST PRICES!! One final note: be sure to get a solid state relay with good reviews, there are some cheap knockoffs there, but some good ones to, so read on your buy.. Or buy 1 s-type thermocouple and a thermocouple controller as used in the video, and than it should run.....
