Train Talks: #43 "Visiting the Johnson City Railroad Experience Museum, TN"
Attention! This video is not made nor intended for kids. This video is made for the purpose of young adults and older adults to enjoy. Model trains are expensive, fragile, and make up a small percentage of the hobby market. (A lot less than what it used to be years ago, but has made a comeback somewhat since 2020.) Model trains are to be cared for and handled with caution. This is to let TH-cam know that I am not making children's content.
Welcome to the Johnson City Railroad Experience in Johnson City, TN! Opening date is 10/3/24.

Electrotren sells the AVE S102 Loksound decoder, I don't know how you'd get it in the US, but here in Spain you can just go to any modelling shop and buy it straight from Electrotren for about 160 bucks. I personally own a DCC & Sound AVE S102 myself, with the Electrotren decoder, however, it is a 21 pin since it's the second edition, I believe yours is the first edition since it doesn't have vented brake discs on the wheels (and the blue LEDs instead of the more realistic yellow ones), so some soldering would be required (The first edition has 8 pin sockets, and Electrotren decoders are 21 pins.) I did own a first edition AVE S102 but I sold it on after buying the new one, it also had a shorting issue when I first got it, turns out one of the wheels had somehow been turned 180º (Oddly, since the previous owner sent me a video of it running with no issues) P.S, I don't know if they do international shipping (I think they do?), but a Spanish store known as "Modelismo Del Tren" sells them for 160€

@@officialpennsyjoe I absolutely agree, specially considering how hard it is to find coaches for it, I personally got really lucky with the fact my set already had two extra pairs, and I already owned another pair myself. (And even then, I'm still missing 3 coaches in order to have a full train) It's not exclusive to the Pato either, finding cars for the S100 is near impossible, and don't get me started on the Civia...

The Baldwin BP20 is definitely one of the most bad ass diesel locomotives in world history. These had almost 2000 cubic inch per cylinder. And a rare exotic diesel at that. The 606sc was well suited to push 25,000 tons of coal in a river towboat, let alone propel passenger locomotives

You know, you do have a point lol. I just do not want to invest into a used DC controller. That, and I want to have an "X" sound decoder plugged in so I can check the speaker quality all in one go with the rest of the review. Though performance may vary depending on the decoder of choice. I want to do those RF-16's at some point, because I have some criticisms to give about the DCC ready board, but alas, they will have to wait until after my Proto2K E6's are complete and their video is done.

shouldnt be comparing BLI's rendering of a tuscan red scheme with Lionels real output of a FOM schemes. FOM and tuscan red are fundamentally two very different color schemes. Plus we havent actually seen BLIs model yet its too soon to judge. Lionels original rendering of their FOM scheme also looked great but their actual model looked terrible.

    • @officialpennsyjoe
      @officialpennsyjoe 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

The FOM scheme was supposed to be Tuscan red as the main color. Also, I have a BLI S2 in the Tuscan red and it looked just like the GG1 Tuscan, if not slightly off. It was not bright red like Lionel's actual offering. Which yes, we agree looked awful. You do have a point though, that we will have to wait and see once they arrive. I have a Bronze K4 as well, and it looks handsome compared to the original renderings they used to do a few years ago. Also, Lionel is getting DGLE wrong lately as well, so I have more confidence in BLI to do their colors properly.

Cool video man! I slightly disagree with you on these. Once you figure out the smoke you're good. You gotta get a syringe and load the chamber from the bottom. IT also states in the manual that these do not come out of the box with smoke. Most of the ones I have sold have had a little smoke but not enough to say wow!! Haven't seen any signs of melting the due to no fluid out of like the 250 +ish i've had and sold. I personally have had a great experience with the ones I have and have sold. I have however, Had a very poor experience with the paragon 3 series. These are neat they have a lot of weight (besides the pilot truck) so electrical connection is much better on a sensitive layout. IFYKYK with Paragon 3 lol. Keep making videos like this Cheers!

Every Paragon 3 that is not the L1s or J1 I have has had their motors replaced with the latest motors from BLI. And of course, I do the hard wiring TCS WOW treatment to all my BLI engines even the diesels by BLI. Motor control becomes a lot more smoother and therefore a more dependable model. I personally have no care for smoke. People are luckier than others and that is really the main issue with BLI is that compared to the best manufactures for HO, their consistency in terms of product quality has been wavy ober the last 20 years. On the basis of smoke, I generally do not want to deal with potential problems hence why I gut the smoke units out and install my decoder of choice and add additional lighting features to the model if I am able to do so. That is me and some others in the hobby. When you hang around car mechanics in a train club, you tend to get their itch about wanting minimal problems to happen over the years and not waste money. Sure, there is the warranty, and I have never had to send any of my new engines I have bought to BLI to send them in, because after I do the decoder conversion, I never had any issues. The only issues I came across are of my own doing during the conversion process and I have only had total failure twice. The most I had to pay was 30$ for a brand new motor for the model and do the repair work myself. Now before I do any conversion on any Paragon 3 model, I would buy a new motor first before the conversion. Reason why is motor failure. Paragon 3 really was early Paragon 1 days 2.0. Paragon 4, was a better step in the right direction although, I have seen early Paragon 4 engines with jerky motors, but no issues with what comes out recently and even now. Back to smoke, I am glad BLI brought back DCC ready amd even more happy that I do not have to take out smoke units amymore. I have yet to get my first DCC ready BLI engine from the returned stealth line as of yet. Still waiting on my RF-16's and the new tooling Q2's I have pre-ordered and soon to be pre-ordering DCC ready B6 switchers. I think it is great to have more consumer choice. Some people may disagree, but I much rather there be smoke for the smoke fans and DCC ready no smoke for modelers like me and others who want a more customizable offering. Anyways, that I am glad tp see different views on subjects such as smoke, DCC ready, and quality of products. Helps me get a better understanding of other people's experiences and broaden's my knowledge. Have a great day!

Nice to see they’re still working on it! They actually sent me some screenshots a while back of the radius problems they were having, and I offered a few suggestions on how to make it work. The original design used an articulated frame like their T1, but the full skirting was getting in the way of the cylinders and valve gear below a 28” or 30” radius. @@DarthSantaFe How much larger is the driver wheel base on this than the T1? I'd think if the T1 can do it without articulation, than so could the S1. I'm wondering if maybe they aren't blinding the center drivers since the prototype S1 had flanges on it's four middle drivers unlike the T1.

Yes indeed. I think there is a few more engines of the PRR to be made and I would personally be happy that they would do re-runs over time afterwards. The G5, Q1, B1, A5, N1, and maybe a CC-1/2 or HC-1.

The state passenger cars are a little larger than the Blue Comet cars. Thanks for posting the Standard Gauge opening. MTH also made Standard Gauge showroom passenger cars. These incredible cars are 3 feet in length and go with the huge Brute engine also made by MTH a few years ago. Original Lionel was going to produce but Josh Lionel Cowen decided the Brute was too big for young kids to handle. If you can find one of these sets your going to pay around $3,000.00.

Thanks for your interest in Lionel Standard Gauge. So many young model railroad enthusiasts have no idea what it is. Lionel Standard gauge and O gauge tinplate are the roots of the hobby and deserve more love. Have you ever heard of Lionel 2 7/8 inch gauge? Those were the very first model trains Lionel made. They were made from 1901 to 1905. They are the rarest of the rare and very few original pieces survive today. Even reproductions are rare and command a high price. Keep posting about Lionel tinplate and Standard Gauge and thanks again!

My pleasure. Standard Gauge is one of those staples that helped pave the wide diverse range we have today. I have heard of other early gauges, but I have not deep dived into them. Personally, I am interested in the 1920's and 1930's style Standard Gauge trains as they were a very colorful and climax point in my view of that era of toy trains. Some of the most interesting and coolest pieces I have seen thru historic videos and news videos were of the vintage European tin plate trains with ticket booths and full interior buildings. Very extravagant pieces that in my view should have some reproduced as toys like they used to. Modern Ops and toy trains of old were rather similar in terms of making the miniature world somewhat believable. I plan on doing more Standard Gauge in the future as I plan to build a "dogbone" loop under my HO layout. I want to add retractable curtains to make it feel like a stage-like play, but can be played with and fun for future kids and neighbors. I have nothing against refurbished original pieces as long as they do not have modern electronics in them. I understand keeping things original, but at the same time making them look their best should be a priority for preservation and future play for generations to come. I do not plan on restoring original pieces, but if I get that itch, then I may try it. Thank you for commenting and I hope you've enjoyed my videos!

Oh my.That thing starting off with a beautifull slow crawl, is amazing. I have bee an ESU kinda guy, simply for their motor control, but that Wow sound decoder just makes it even better than ESU. It is fairly hard to get a steamer to start off like this model. A few weeks back, I put a Wow sound in a 90s run Rivarossi BB.I was so impressed, I am going with Wow sound for a couple more of my steamers. How do you find the Wow sound? I have always liked BLI locos but have not had much with their electrical side of things. About 15 years ago, I bought their first run of cab forward.( Yeh the dreaded Quantum) What a dismal failure of a loco!!. I bought an upgrade chip, which improved it somewhat & after buying a BLI SD40-2 (Quantum again) I was put off from BLI for a very long time. They are really well made but the electrical side lets them down badly.. You have really good talent & patience also. Thankyou for the video. Michael NZ

I recently got back into model railroading after being away for over 30 years. I retired a couple years ago and figured it was time to rekindle my passion for trains. My grandfather worked for the PRR on the Middle Division between Harrisburg and Altoona. I decided to concentrate on the PRR Middle Division during the years 1952 and 1953. This gives me boundaries but this time period includes the early cab diesels which I love and the late steamers. Currently I am concentrating on the diesels and trying to get an example of diesels that were assigned to the Middle Division in March of 1952 and March of 1953. The BP20s were the last examples that I needed except for the switchers which is another story on getting prototypical examples for the Middle Division. I wanted the DGLE because they were assigned to Harrisburg fresh from Baldwin and were running in 1952 but when they became unreliable, they were then transferred to other smaller intercity runs so none was assigned to the middle division in March of 1953. The Tuscan paint scheme was done at the end of the summer in 1952 so I wanted the DGLE scheme for the beginning of 1952 before they were transferred from the middle division. They were ordered in ABA consists from Baldwin and if I were to find a nice A unit at the right price, I would consider it but for now, the AB set will suffice. I am very much interested in your progress with your BP20 set as I plan to switch to DCC also and would like to add windows and other small details. I have over 40 units with ABA, ABBA and AA consists that would have typically run the Middle Division. Most are DCC but I have a few that I will need to add DCC plus some that may have been older DCC which I may want to upgrade. I need to renumber a few of them to match the numbers that ran on the Middle Division and I have found an expert on doing that for very reasonable pricing. That is my next step plus getting a display cabinet. Then I can take one at a time and detail them, lube them and make sure they work properly. I look forward to watching more of your videos and getting ideas and learning how to do the finer detailing. Thank you, Stan Huntingdon County, PA

Hello Stan, I appreciate the history and background that your family has been involved with railroading. That really sounds like an interesting time to model. The BP-20's I found were from a time I saw a number of the Tuscan scheme ones and unpainted brass showing up on e-Bay for fair prices compared to what I have come across on Brass Trains.com. I have not yet chosen a time when I want to dive into working on them, but perhaps sometime either later this year, or next year. Just recently, I finished installing TCS WOW DCC sound decoders to my Broadway Limited Imports ABBA set of Blueline PRR EMD F7's. Unfortunately, I did not get to document how I hardwired them, but I can say the least they were not difficult or confusing compared to some other BLI models I have worked on. That being said, I need to buy more decoders as per usual with the never ending projects with the plans of hopefully constructing the bench work for my layout near the end of the year. In time, with a lot of interest of other viewers about these Oriental Limited BP-20's, I will get to them, and do a video on how I will hard wire them. Currently, I have no plans on window details at the moment, since they are not a primary concern, but getting them to run reliably first without shorting is a first I want to achieve before getting into the finishing up details. I have done a video on the history on my railroad universe in my basement, and PRR is the core of it with a big twist. I am glad you enjoyed what I have to offer and I hope you continue to enjoy and see my eventual plans with the BP-20's. (Yes, they sucked in real life, but on my railroad, they got upgraded with the twin 608A prime movers that the RF-16's used. So, they would produce 3'200HP each unit. An AB set would have made more than Centipedes! Although, I am playing a bit with the history and what was available at the time of their creation and existence.)
