The Best City in Spain for Expats NOBODY Talks About | Retire in Malaga & Andalusia
To retire in Málaga is an idea that has been gaining popularity since 2020. The reduction in wealth tax added one more benefit to this place, which many consider the best city to live in Spain as an expat retiree.
How does it compare against cities like Barcelona, Madrid, or Bilbao? Why the cost of living in Malaga and Andalusia is so low?
We answer all that, and also present some interesting alternatives for retirement in Spain, like Torremolinos and Rincón de la Victoria.

🔎 EXCERPT 🔎
Have you ever thought about retiring to a place
where the sun shines almost every day?
The cost of living is half of the cost of Florida,
and 60% cheaper than London, England
And this place is safer than ANY state in the US (it is even safer than Maine)
After taking the opinions of numerous locals and other residents,
I discovered why Malaga, and the region of Costa del Sol in Spain,
became such an attractive destination for expat retirees.
And today you will discover all these reasons - some of them never crossed my mind
BUT…
At the end of this video, I will also tell you an essential aspect to consider if you ever thought about retirement in Spain
So with no further ado,
let's jump into the reasons that make Malaga an insanely good cost-benefit for retirement abroad.
And here is a tip: It is not only about the sun, or only about the cost of living.
It goes way beyond that, and the first positive aspect we will talk about is proof of that
It is that in 2022, the autonomous community of Andalusia, where Malaga is located,
introduced several tax benefits for foreigners and residents.
They implemented a 100% rebate on the wealth tax, effectively eliminating this tax for residents and non-residents who have assets in the region.
Their idea is to attract more high-net-worth individuals to establish their residence in Andalusia
Andalusia also reduced other taxes, like inheritance tax and property transfer tax.
For example, imagine that you buy a house in Andalusia, and then your children inherit it later.
If the house costs less than 1 million euros, they will not pay ANY inheritance tax.
Remember that these incentives are valid only for Andalusia. In other parts of Spain like Madrid or Barcelona, the tax code is different.
The second positive thing about this region is the private healthcare.

Spain and especially this area is full of real estate scams. If you dont speak the language and understand about title ownership and transfer, I would stay away. Research real estate SCAMS in Spain and the specific areas youre looking to move. While living in the US isn't cheap anymore, atleast we have laws to protect people from squatters, scammers and fake sellers and agents.

I am talking about words like STOPPED- you say STOPPID, or NAMED you say NAMEID, DREAMED, you say DREAMID, RELAXED you say RELAXID, BORED, you say BORID. FROM DEC to APRIL a hotel will cost you up to r$500 a DAY or r$15,000 per MONTH. OUT of season you can rent a furnished apto for r$1200 a MONTH RICH Argentinos and Uruguayians have no problem spending r$300-500 a day in the summer

I’m an American living in Portugal and I’ve spent over a year researching and looking at properties especially in the Costa Del sol. I made two offers on two properties. Both had significant defects which were not disclosed to me that I found out of which caused me to drop out of the sales. Many times I’ve been warned about buying property in Spain. You need to get a high integrity attorney in Spain as they may be colluding with the seller. This happened in Marbella and it was a huge scandal. Secondly, there are number of TH-cam channels that warn expatriates if they think they’re gonna make money off of investing in a property in Spain, think again. Because if you try to rent it for income between the minimal income you get in the winter and all of the taxes, Fees, property management fees, etc. etc. you’re not gonna make much. Also, don’t count on your property increasing in value over the years as it may not happen. If you’re not there, beware of and protect against squatters that enter your home and live there it’s very difficult to get them out like over a year long process. Essentially what was communicated was don’t buy property in Spain for income or profit but only as a lifestyle choice because you want to live there. Thirdly, when I have visited Malaga recently, it was overcrowded, hot and humid, not comfortable and I didn’t want to stay for very long at all. The downtown was overwhelmed with Tourists and we know how their attitudes are changing towards tourists. You say they’re welcoming? I heard of a lady who basically was heckled to go home and doesn’t feel safe in some of the neighborhoods in Malaga. Hi unemployment may somewhat lower costs, but also is not good as crime rates tend to go up when young people are unemployed, etc. etc. This has been a chronic problem in costa del sol for many years. Lastly, prices on property have gone up all over the Costa Del sol. You must learn Spanish, and if you have a chronic condition pre-existing, you may not get residency. So many things to check out before you move. I’m more interested in northern Spain now because it’s too, more affluent, safer, cleaner, more tempered climate compared to too damn hot in Andalusia in the summer even if you’re at the coast, it’s too damn hot

I think that migrants with lots of money are firstly welcome, but when they purchase houses and prices for housings and rent will rise, so that the Croats themselfes will suffer (as they already do), things will turn. Just look at Portugal, Spain / Mallorca / Barcelona, where their own citizens are fed up with too many "rich" migrants that make living there too expensive for their own people. If you love this country, leave it alone!!!

I feel your pain mate, as a fellow retiree, I’d suggest you look into passive index fund investing and learn some more. For me, I had my share of ups and downs when I first started looking for a consistent passive income so I hired an expert advisor for aid, and following her advice, I poured $30k in value stocks and digital assets, Up to 200k so far and pretty sure I'm ready for whatever comes.

@@ElijahOliver-t9u The crazy part is that those advisors are probably outperforming the market and raising good returns but some are charging fees over fees that drain your portfolio. Is this the case with yours too?

Why is there a clip of Venezia in this video of Sicily?

    • @the_expat

It is in the part where I compare the low-density of tourism in Agrigento with "other parts" that are over-explored. No better example than Venezia for tourism over exploration.

I was expecting to see Colombia in the first 3 places. I have a friend from Boston that flyes to Colombia 3-4 times a year and he told me only good things about the country. The crime rate dropped a lot in the last years especially in Medellin, low living costs, although I checked the renting costs over there and for a nice 2-3 room apartment you still need to pay 1500-3000 usd from your pocket, but the rest is a dream… the weather also…it’s like spring all year long
