How to Add Winter Interest to a Garden for All-Season Enjoyment.
It is easy to focus on designing a garden for spring and summer when most people are outside to enjoy the garden. It is easy to forget about the garden in winter. After planting my flower beds I noticed that the garden lacked interest and structure during the winter. Since then, I have been working on fixing what I consider to be my biggest garden design mistake. I am adding evergreens, shrubs, and grasses to add winter interest, definition, and structure. In this video, I will review the steps I took to fix this mistake and how you can avoid making this common design mistake.

A Little Update to the Front Border: Moving Plants in the Summer Heat
I sure have learned the same thing, instead of just planting pretty flowers, I am now very appreciative of evergreen options that I planted and their leaf shapes. Thankfully we get a good amount of snow here and the sparkling white ground cover sure is beautiful!
My garden is mostly evergreens of various sizes, shapes and colors with a few perennials, vines and lots of trees - This makes my garden look almost the same year around......
That’s a well planned and intentioned garden. I may gravitate towards that as I age to decrease maintenance but ai live a cottage garden too much at this point
Great video, Claudia. Very informative. I love the intentional additions to your seasonal gardens.
Thank you very much. I’m looking forward to them filling in and adding the impact i hope for
I agree with you. I always went for a "natural" garden look, meaning I didn't want a formal look. Then, I had a light bulb moment where I now understand how a round, or square formed shrub thrown in here and there, enhances my natural garden, so I am seeking out some of those shapes. It's so much more interesting and everything stands out because you're eye is drawn everywhere.
The occasional change in shape gives your eyes places to land in the garden. The hats your favorite evergreen
@@TheOrganizedHomemaker I have just latched on to conifers of all types this year. I have very little sun space, though, so I have to be careful with what I choose.
Thank for the information loved it! It helped me think about structure in the garden as well s color 😊
You are so welcome!
Great video. What do you use to mulch your garden?
I use wood chips and leaves as mulch
Love your gardening videos!! I'm in Michigan (I believe you said you used to live here??). Personally, even my mistakes are a joyful learning experience. 😊 Oh, I don't think I've ever seen a weeping Cedar! Your garden is beautiful. Thank you for sharing! (And I think your husband is in touch with the beautiful energy God's creation gives us). Best wishes from Michigan!
Thank you Judy for being here. Yes i lived in southwest Michigan for 11.5 years. I also agree with you about learning from your mistakes
I love this advice! I need to add some evergreens to my garden. 😊
Those boxwoods and spiral topiaries look AMAZING! Wow!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thank you. I have been enjoying the impact they make
I wish you would post more videos.. I started watching your video doing spring season. At that time, I didn't know what a cottage garden was. You inspired me to create my own very small butterfly cottage garden. Thanks for sharing your content.
Thank you for being here and watching. I am working on getting back into a routine.
Thanks for your video. Your tree doesn't have thorns like mine, so I'm wondering if you know the type of tree you have?
Mi e is a Persian lime tree
What a great idea yes, all the things that we should do but reminding us that we should do it because we forget. Thank you! HAPPY PLANTING
You are welcome!
You are the cutest! Love the content and your personality. ❤️
@@NorisHouse thank you very much
Great tour Claudia. I use many of those plants mentioned. They bring so much insect activity to the garden. Luckily I have only dealt with deer once and I literally chased them out of the garden. I must have made such a crazy fuss that they have since not returned. I do however get plenty vole and other burrowing creatures.
Thank you. They do bring loads of pollinators and help foster a healthy ecosystem
Quick and to the point! Great info!
Glad you liked it!!
Claudia this garden is stunning, and you are so right about these plants. The frangrance and texture tip I find to be the most effective with plants in my own garden with ton of deer. And this year, lots of bunnies too 😞 I added Joe Pye Weed last year and quickly fell in love with it! 💚
Hey Steph thanks for watching. The deer aren’t as much of an issue for me but the rabbit Oye. I found a variegated Joe-pye weed and added it to the garden
The rabbits were awful in my garden this year. However, I’ve noticed the population has decreased significantly. I think the owls and hawks have been busy. This was a great tour with the focus on decreasing rabbit and deer pressure. Thank you.
Thanks for watching Anne. They have been bad this year as well the family of hawks I’m my area have moved in i think
Nice haul!
Thank you
My husband and I were there back in 2008. It was our 25th anniversary. We spent one night at the Callaway Gardens spa and hotel (that was all we could afford) and the remainder of our stay was in a cabin at FDR state park, where we spent our honeymoon. Lovely estate and gardens, sweet memories.
It is such a stately property and the gardens change with echo season

This really helped me, thank you. I’ve been growing dahlias for 5 years now and this seems like a great alternative to those tiny stakes that can’t hold up to the large stems of my dahlias.
Glad it was helpful!
I love your garden! Yes! Your approach is validated by psychological research! Beauty, fragrance, tranquility are all essential for good mental and emotional health - and yet those are the things that often get left behind, especially when we are on budgets and have little time for actual living and being. Birdsong, butterflies, bees and the sound of water are all healing! Thank you for sharing your beautiful garden and defining this wonderful approach!
Thank you for watching. I think most of us as gardeners just focus on making it pretty not even realizing that it can be beneficial and beautiful at the same time.
Love this approach to gardening 💚🌿💚 You are AWESOME. Instant subscription 😊
I didn't realize that I have a sensory garden 😁 Thank you 🙏

I’m in 8b and have several types of lavender but my favorites are a Spanish lavender and one called phenomenal lavender which is recommended for warm climates. I would consider adding some basil varieties for the flower, smell and taste. A sensitive plant would be a fun addition. I’m sorry to hear that your husband has a traumatic brain injury. I have a cousin who has a traumatic brain injury and she’s come a long way in her journey as well. I think I might add a garden room that focuses on as many senses as possible. Thanks for the inspiration.
You are most welcome. Glad to i spite you. Thank you for watching and your sweet comments about my husband. I will look into the sensitive plant as it would be a good one for touch. I have tons of basil in the veggie garden and may add some lemon basil here

Hi, I'm a new subscriber and gardener! I love your gardens. Could you please tell me what kind of tree the Cardinal's nest is in, I ask because I'm building my gardens and would love to be able to see (encourage) birds nesting. Thanks
Thanks for subbing! Welcome. My cardinals like to nest in dense shrubs. They are in my older established forsythias and azaleas. I even had them in my climbing rose this year
Enjoyed this video. An edible you might consider is mint. Plant it in a pot rather than directly in the ground to avoid it spreading.
Yes that is a good one and it also adds to the sense of fragrance. Thank you
Not sure if I missed it, but I have some pink strawflowers that would go perfectly too. I have to touch them every time I walk by. They make that crunchy sound. 😊
That's a great idea! Thank you I’m not sure why that doesn’t occur to me
