I Bought Some New TOYS! | LaunchPad, NDLR and Norns Ambient Performance
#newmusic #ambient #music #generative
I got my hands on a Monome Norns Shield and a LaunchPad X to use with it. So excited to try some new things. Be ready for a review of this immense sound computer in the future.
All sounds other than the samples are made with softsynths in the DAW but all sequencing is live or made with the norns.

    what a great review, thank you for the this Karl, I'm a "conservative own generative" musician that is interested in this generative music more from the point of using tools like these to generate music that can also be transposed and used over chord progressions, so I would like to ask you a few questions: 1.) 2 years later, do you still own it and use it as much as you did when you made these videos 2.) seeing what is available now in the similar price range (like the torso t-1 and maybe others), would you still choose /recommend this device, or recommend something else for the purpose that I mentioned above. 3.) Do you know / use any software tools that have capabilities like what these hardware tools have ? Thank you again !!!

    I just bought this thing used on an impulse an hour ago because my rig had an empty power socket that was giving me the ick. I don't need more voices or effects, and this seemed like something different. I immediately got buyer's remorse because most of my gear is Elektron and already sports some sick (and expensive) sequencing capabilities. Glad I found your vid that confirms that this is on some other shit from the Elektron sequencers and that if I take the time to learn it, I could trick people into thinking I was actual musician ;-) I mostly do harder style techno (I'm a Michigander), so I'm a bit concerned about how it will fit in with my workflow, but I guess I could tack it into Digitakt tracks for some pitched polymeter drums. That sounds pretty techno, right? Great vid, bro!

    Hi Karl, Loved the comments, had me chuckling away to myself. But I want to applaud you in showing how things dont always turn out. There are two great lessons here, the first is showing how you spotted the problems, how you "recovered" them and didn't simply just "throw the teddy out the cot". The second, and I think even more important is that far to many TH-cam videos show a 3 minute section of music that took 30 hrs to work out, and the trouble with that is we judge our 3 minute noodles against those videos and get disheartened. So its refreshing to see that things don't always go well great "Noodlers" like yourself and so we should all persevere.

    I really love your choice of cords and I'm about to receive my NDLR and would like to use the same cords as those played in this video. Is it simply a case of selecting the Lydian scale in Db and the triad cords: I Db, iv°G, V Ab and iii F, or is there more to this? Also, why does the NDLR screen state Dd Lydian instead of Db Lydian? Thanks for your video, it's very inspiring.

    NDLR user of a few years experience here, & many hardware sequencers in a largely hw rig (cirklon, notron, deluge, tracker, octatrack... plenty of choice!). the two issues you describe- the display of the actual range of notes played by the pad section, post-modulation &/or midi control could certainly be a bit more useful, but it does show you the range of midi note numbers in play, & I tend to gravitate towards this if I'm worried something is getting out of bounds. I control these parameters quite closely as the NDLR may be contributing parts to a larger arrangement coming from another sequencer. the pattern lengths can be changed in two different places, both for pitches & for rhythm, & this leads to the confusion... so.... if I make a pattern with just four steps, I fill up the blank space with repeats of those four steps. it's tedious, but easier if you make the entries from a keyboard instead of the encoder. I've found that you can 'record' into the pattern edit from an external sequencer, so essentially you can edit the pattern 'live' from (say) a doepfer maq, or anything else sending out a repeated pattern of notes. haven't tried this with velocities & the rhythm editor yet. on my wish list is having the thing switch its own brain off a bit & follow the notes coming into it to form the basis of what notes it allows back out. so you could play a C major chord then a Db minor... even with extensive midi control, this can be a bit of a fumble when the NDLR is trying to force everything into one of its own scales. the trigger for changing key would then be either at a bar end or when it sees three simultaneous note-ons from an external source. I'd like a better quantised stop-start of the elements too. but I manage with the external control functionality as it is, & at the moment I'm using it in a very minimal set-up with one 1010 black box attached, full of multisampled instruments, & providing basic direction to the NDLR from one of its own sequencer tracks. I think they've got a lot right, in a tool that-for me- makes a lot of sense in a band context too, where you might be on the receiving end of a guitarist's chord suggestions & need to translate them into keyboard/string/brass parts.

    Sometimes I feel the NDLR feels a bit outtdated, or options limited. The harmonizing feature of 4 sequencers has been unique, but now there is also the Oxi One (have you seen it?) that also features this, and a lot more. seems like a more complete sequencer imo, perhaps thats more 'the ultimate' sequencer.....

    • @KarlClarkeMusic
      @KarlClarkeMusic 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeh, I feel that too the generative sequencer market is growing at a rapid pace, which is really nice for a buyer (just not for someone who already bought 😂) The Oxi One is a sequencer I'd love to try if my wallet allowed it. Same with the Torso T1, though a lot of that functionality can be achieved with other systems too. I'm starting to get more into the Monome Norns which I have a jam up already which has a plethora of generative possibilities.

    Great demo. Love the chill vibes. I've had the NDLR for about 20 months, and it is the tool I use when I just want to sit in the glowing dusk of my music room synths and jam for myself. It is an amazing box. Another thing I did with the NDLR was to create four CV control modules in Cherry Audio Voltage, so that every parameter of the NDLR could be manipulated by oscillators, glides, noise, etc. So that takes generative music to a whole new level. Basically, Voltage controls the NDLR, which sends MIDI back into Voltage that then controls various synths. In addition, the synths are also undergoing CV manipulation, so you get continually evolving sound from them, along with evolving musical patterns. Another fun trick is to use very slow, synced random oscillators or sample and holds to switch instruments. About 6 months back, I purchased a Launchpad Mk3, and sometimes use that with the above setup to add a little more funk, or sequence the percussion. However, the Faderfox PC12 is my goto device to add overrides to all of the above.

    • @KarlClarkeMusic
      @KarlClarkeMusic 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is a very interesting idea you've described, I do feel that the LFO Matrix onboard is a bit limiting, and definitely not great for speed. Perhaps using a Matrix mixer with 8 seperate modulation sources linked to 8 of the most pronounced CCs would work well, that way you can have additive modulation too. The LaunchPad is actually running the Norns script Arcologies which is a very interesting generative environment. Hoping to do more so stay tuned.

    Thanks for the video. I enjoyed it and it got me thinking. Could one use midi effects in the DAW to randomise the scale degree and/or chords type for a similar result? One could even have different levels of randomisation for different sections of a piece. And yes, generative is lots of fun, even though I do also enjoy pressing those buttons on the ndlr when I jam. Showing my age, but back in the 80s, my trusty Yamaha drum machine would let you assign specific midi notes to individual drum parts (c5 to the kick, g4 to the snare etc ). You could program simple bass parts like this by outputting the midi to a synth, but more fun was to assign a pentatonic scale (for example) to a kit, play back an existing drum part for a song and see what resulted when sent out to your synth. It wasn't random, as such, as the piece reflected the structure of the drum part, but was very unpredictable and often very musical. (You could tweak tempo and the midi tuning for individual drums until something worthwhile happened.) Chuck on a delay, use or design a suitable synth patch, add some distortion and chorus, and send it all through a large reverb... Hours of fun!

    • @KarlClarkeMusic
      @KarlClarkeMusic 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I tend to enjoy something more random than cyclical in nature. But even then using Permutation allows for the locking of random generated patterns with probabilistic change. So a pattern of chord changes 'mostly' that's the same but also slightly changes each time it is clocked.
