Baptist Fan with rulers - it nearly went horribly wrong!
Watch as I longarm quilt a beautiful scrap quilting using Baptist fan rulers. In this video, I show the process of adding a classic quilting design to a scrappy quilt. The Baptist fan pattern is a favourite for traditional and modern quilts alike, creating elegant curves to enhance your patchwork.
If you love scrap quilting and want to see how a well chosen quilting design brings a quilt to life, you are in the right place. Be sure to like, subscribe and hit the bell icon so you don't miss seeing this quilt finished completely.
Let me know in the comments - have you tried quilting with Baptist fan rulers? What's your favourite quilting design for scrap quilts?

    Unfortunately I tend to use most scraps to create random strips for the quilt backing, then use these strips to extend the backing fabric to make it wide and/or long enough. Love your granny squares but wouldn’t like to cut off the ‘corners’ to create a square 😳 I’m wondering if it’s possible to create the same thing with strips of squares 🤔🤔 or will it drive me crazy 🤪 Another great idea 👍 So many quilts, so little time 😢 👏👏🇬🇧

    I love scrap quilts and make a lot of them. I don't precut my scraps and I don't sort them by color. Mostly they're in a basket and the smaller bits (nothing under ~1 inch) are in their own box. Mostly I make a variation of a scrappy vortex or crumb quilt. I do look at my scraps and I might think, this quilt needs more red, and cut a few strips of red from the stash. I might say, no pinks in this quilt, or no muddy colors, or whatever strikes my fancy of the moment. Sometimes I say never say never but I've never made a monochromatic scrappy quilt and don't think I will. I've made some potholders I like a lot with the bitty scraps. I make two little scrappy pieced squares, about 8 inches more or less, and machine quilt each with batting leftovers and random backing, then join the two with binding.

    I literally have small cabinets of drawers under my cutting table (2 folding tables side by side) which is quite large. Each drawer has a different color of scraps. Name the color and there's a drawer for it. I'm 73 and have been sewing and quilting for many, many years, plus an Etsy business, and the scraps have grown exponentially. My stash is enormous as well. I just wish I was super woman and could bust through a lot of it. When I die some lucky individual will have come upon quite a treasure of fabrics. They could open their own shop. hahaha

    I love my scraps!! Sometimes they are like free fabric! 😊 I clean and organize my sewing room every january. For the last 3yrs i have tried a different scrap system each year. They all go well for a couple months, then i fall off and they just sit in their bins. 🤦 this year instead of a size or shape system, i am just sorting them by color. I have a booth at our local farmers market in the summer and do a few fall/winter craft fairs. So if the scrap is large enough to cut a small bag or wallet from, i am doing that. Then whats left goes in its color bin. I am planning on making scrappy crumb fabric tote bags this year, but keeping them in color ways to be more appealing to my customers. Hopefully this will help me use more of my scraps!

    I Love scrap quilts! Here @TH-cam & in the USA I follow Lori Holt & Bonnie Hunter--2 excellent Scrap Queens. I use Bonnie's "Leader & Ender" method to sew 2 projects at once. Being a retired teacher, I repurposed standing plastic drawer units for scrap management sorted by color rather than size. I tried the pre-cutting method but found I am just too lazy for that!! I constantly challenge myself to look 1st in the scraps before I cut into larger pieces. Very much enjoyed finding your channel today! Looking forward to your progress in 2025.

    Just found your channel. Love your sense of humour! Opening your cupboard of doom! Really made me chuckle. I have worked hard to find all my fabric. I have only confirmed what I knew. Way to much was the answer. The January days are mostly dreary in Southern Ontario Canada. One day above freezing the next 7 to 10 below. So I hole up in my lair aka the sewingroom and what for spring.

      @tenminutequilter 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thank you so much for your lovely comment. Do you have a cupboard of doom?? It sounds like you're in the same boat as me - too much fabric! Has yours spread all over the house? Yes I love keeping scraps. But it can be a bit overwhelming. I have spent so much time cutting scraps that now have a guilty feeling that I should be using them up. It started with making 4 patches out of my children novelty fabric. 200 plus 4 patches. Then what? I saw the potato chip videos. So I cut up my neutrals from mask and cap making. Then I had 200 plus bigger blocks but kind of dull. So I potato chipped more kid fabric. To make another round. Augh the stress of matching the four patches. I can't do completely random. The tops will all go to charity for kids. I have 3 tops finished. But it is really not fun sewing them anymore. I have so many other things I would rather do. Including more scraps.... I definitely need a plan. After this I think i will leave things in bigger pieces and make bigger pieced blocks for charity. I get the cutting down and having a ready to sew project, but it has created a self-imposed pressure only I can solve. Lol

    • @tenminutequilter
      @tenminutequilter 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      It is a bit much sometimes isn't it? They weigh on me so much sometimes, and then I have to remind myself that I am lucky that I have so much fabric - I think some people would love to have this problem. Someone else has pointed out the potato chip blocks as well - that's a new one for me. We do put ourselves under pressure don't we? Someone will love your quilts though. But yes, it is about being kind to yourself and enjoying what you are doing and I know I forget that sometimes. xxx

      @@tenminutequilter That’s the question right? What to do with the quilts! These will probably go to the Project Linus group for young adults. I keep my scraps in clear bins by color and just pile them in. I went through and cut them a couple years ago following Lori Holt’s way - 1.5 inch, 2.5 inch, 3.5 inch and 5 inches. I found that I later regretted cutting them up because I wanted a bigger piece of the scrap. So now I only cut them as I use them. Fun video. I have too many charm packs (if that’s possible) so I think I will cut them up and do your pattern!

Great job for whoever made the quilt and to you for finishing it. As of my post, you have 996 subscribers. Hope it will be 1000 soon.

    Yes I put a label on all my quilts. Either hand written or on my embroidery machine to document when it was made, where and by whom and who it went to.

    I try to always add a label to the quilts I make for people 👍 My Bernina, a quilting edition, has an alphabet, so I start each label with - This quilt was made with love and stitches for …. Attaching a label is NOT my favourite job 😳😳 so I’m trying to remember to actually sew it into the backing piece before I create my quilt sandwich, and I get quite cross with myself if I forget 😂😂 Looking forward to seeing all your finished quilts 😃 and I’m really keen to make a pinwheel quilt 🥰 👏👏🇬🇧

      That sounds like a good plan, to embroider them and attach them but I think I would forget as well. I wonder if I could get some printed up - hmm, might be worth thinking about. Go for the Pinwheel. Hope you are well xxxx

    I just hand write the laundering instructions. I mainly make quilts for the NICU department. Cheers, Lynn

      That's a good idea. I know someone who has labels printed with the washing instructions like you have in clothes and that gets sewn into the binding. It's lovely to make quilts for special places like NICU, I am sure they are much loved and appreciated. Thank you for your comment xx

    my long arm also dislikes going right to left. Thread breaks easily unless I go VERY slow. I don’t usually do labels. But when I do I have some that I had made off ETSY with a logo my friend made for me…but I usually forget to sew it in

      It's funny isn't it how they don't like certain directions. I did one run right to left and it was fine, but the second time it broke which was when I decided to just stick to left to right. It wasn't a big chore really. Yes, I might look at getting some labels printed, good plan. But yes, just to remember then to put them in! Thank you for commenting xxx

    I am lucky enough to own an embroidery machine so i just embroider a little note and made label directly onto the quilt. am very envious of your long arm! I lost my quilting mojo a while ago but am just getting back into it. mind you, i have decided to make a cathedral window quilt this year - not sure what i was thinking!!

    • @tenminutequilter
      @tenminutequilter 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Embroidering them is a great idea. I have an alphabet on my sewing machine so maybe I should look at that. Quilting mojo comes and goes doesn't it? I try not to beat myself up too much if I don't feel like it, but it's hard isn't it? I have all this fabric and feel guilty if I don't use it. Cathedral Window is lovely, but you are brave doing a quilt - by hand or machine??

    Hello. Which Bernina machine do you have and where did you purchase it from please? Assuming it was the UK xx

    • @tenminutequilter
      @tenminutequilter 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hello there, thanks for your question. I have a Q20 Bernina but I have it on a small frame as I don't have space for a larger one. Having said that, the size suits me really and I don't think I would go bigger. Yes, bought in the UK and I actually got it via Ebay. The lady who sold it was having health issues unfortunately. It is worth checking, they do come up every so often. xx

      @@tenminutequilter thank you for your response. Having just purchased the cutie breeze your machine caught my attention. I’d love a machine like yours as I believe the BSR is inbuilt. But the little rebel is more achievable price wise. But eBay I’d never thought of. So I’m really glad I asked. Happy sewing xx

      @@lyndacottam397 Yes, the BSR is inbuilt which is great. Ebay is always worth keeping an eye on, although I think they tend to hold their price these days, so it's hard to find a bargain. But you never know....
