Telling sensitive stories with compassion - with writer Rachel Allen | Ep #5
You're in for an absolute treat with this episode! I had the utter joy of chatting with the phenomenal Rachel Allen - a writer, journalist, and memoirist who's as sharp as a tack and twice as insightful.
Rachel and I dove headfirst into the glorious mess of creative writing, particularly when it comes to tackling sensitive subjects. We talked about everything from how she approaches writing about trauma (including her own) to the importance of treating every single person with compassion and humanity - even those society might deem 'unworthy'.
I was utterly gobsmacked by Rachel's ability to find the humanity in everyone she encounters. She has this incredible knack for excavating stories from the most unexpected places - from prison guards to taxi drivers.
We also chewed over the challenges of balancing honesty and authenticity in storytelling with respecting the privacy and feelings of those involved. And of course, we couldn't help but touch on the importance of self-care when dealing with heavy subjects.
If you're fascinated by the human condition and love a good, juicy story (who doesn't?), then pop the kettle on and settle in for a listen. I promise you'll come away feeling inspired, uplifted, and maybe even a tad more compassionate towards your fellow humans.

Thoroughly enjoyed this. I love helens channel too. Im in my late 40s and feel stuck in life, i haven't found a job that makes me happy and drift from job to job unhappy, unfulfilled. I love to create and think that's my neurodiverse brain. It makes me feel calm and relaxes my chaotic brain. I just dont know where i go from here.
Nice lady, nice interview! ❤️
Glad you enjoyed it 😊
Lille rettelse…Winsor og Newton, ikke Windsor😍…ellers herlig TH-cam kanal, dejligt kattemenneske også😻
That was a cracker, Eli! As always, you listen properly, and Lucy was a very interesting guest. I knew Creatrix of course, but have now put her other books on my wish list. Re suggested music, I thoroughly recommend “Renaissance Masterpieces” CD, PCD 806, Directed by Mark Brown (HMP innovative Music Productions.) It has a green cover and I promise you will be blown away! All the famous stuff is on it.❤
Glad you enjoyed it! 😻

Hey, is this a selfmade sketchbook? I’m not sure, it looks like. And from wich Brand are the white brushes? Thank you. Watched it when I‘m sad, it helped a bit. ✌🏻🍬
Hi, I'm sorry that you're sad - I hope you feel better soon 🤗. The sketchbook is a Fabriano Venezia, and the brushes are a set by Artify 😻
The Isaiah Robertson cross design and the other woodcarvings bare a striking resemblance to the Merry Cemetery in Maramures, Romania. I wonder if any inspiration was taken from there.
Oh interesting - there are definitely similarities
I've been recently getting into adult coloring + sketching and watching this color exercise was very helpful for me. Thanks!
Glad you found it useful 😊
Carrie is such an amazing mentor!
She's the best! 😻
Wonderful interesting chat! How very sad those poor women had no names! Thanks to Carrie for caring and having respect to actually christen them!it would be lovely if someone came forward and identified them!…who knows,it could happen!I can imagine there were so many great women artist in the past that have basically been ignored..terrible!At least nowadays, woman have a voice and things are improving! Thanks Carrie for helping to liberate Women!Great artwork!❤
So glad you enjoyed it! 😻
I had such a wonderful time being in conversation with you. I felt safe and comfortable to really open up and share. I hope people find value in our chat!
I'm sure they will - you were fabulous! ❤
That’s such a gorgeous book!
They all are 🤤😻😜
You will get addicted playing with your gelli plate and not be able to stop!!! I know, I have one. I have the big one and I have a small one I use in my sketchbooks. Your right it is a gelli print cult!😊
Obsessed 😂
Thanks so much for the book sharing..so enlightening!Think Frida Kahlo always comes to most people’s minds when thinking of women artists and modern day such as Tracey Emin…you have really made me want explore other female artists now..think google is going to be busy!!😀Really like Suzanne Valadon’s paintings! Some great French artists,I like Toulouse-Lautrec,especially his Moulin Rouge pieces and The Jockey!Fab video as always… oh and make sure to keep up your nose art around the gallery’s!🤣❤
Woman after my own heart! I love and adore my art and fashion designer books. Some here I didn’t know. Added to wish list! ❤️
Art books 😍😍😍 thank you
What a sparkling sketchbook! Really nice 😄
Thank you so much 😀
Great conversation, with really helpful advice on how to get into using my mountain of unused sketchbooks :-). The only downside for me was the painting - really distracting (maybe a speedy timelapse at the end or as you're wrapping up the chat would work better)!
That's great feedback, thank you. Glad you enjoyed the episode 😻
This makes me think of the song "big bottom girls" by Queen!
Hahaha they make the rocking world go round 😜😻
Nice illustrations. *Do you ever use crayons* ? Stay happy (everyone/
Just love your enthusiam ❤
Aww thanks 😻
Ah,I think your life drawings are better than you think!!I liked the group of ladies, especially the one who looks like she’s playing pool! Oh and cheeky cat popping up lol!I have to agree about landscapes, people often suggest we should step outside of our comfort zone but if your forcing yourself to do something alien that you don’t enjoy, you’re not going to get the result you want.Saying that, your painting was very good, maybe if the little house was more abstract, you would have been happier?Really enjoyed your sketchbook tour and all your thoughts! Thanks for sharing…more to come I hope!❤
Aww Bev, you are the sweetest. Thank you so much for your kind words. I look forward to your comments every week 😻❤
@@ZuzusHausofCats You are so welcome..I have a compulsion to tell the truth!!❤️
I love this, and I agree with you on mixing colors. It's my favorite thing. I pretend I'm doing it to see what colors I might use in a sketch, but really I just like to mix colors and see what I get. It is the most amazing thing, especially with gouache.
Ahhhh me too!! It's just SO GOOD!!! 😻
Are you familiar with the landscape artist Wolff Kahn?!
I wasn't but I just looked him up and I love his work! You've sent me down a delightful, colourful rabbit hole - thank you 😻
I like your idea of collecting shapes. Love your sketchbook tour! 😊
Thank you so much! Yeah, the collecting shapes thing has been a game changer 😻
Is that Trixie in the background?! Either way, it's beautiful!! ❤ Courtney
Oh well spotted! It's not technically a painting of Trixie, but I did use some sketches I had done of her for reference 😻
Loved this video ❤ I live in Amsterdam and can tell which bridge you were drawing!
Oh no way! That's so cool 😻
What a great idea- thanks for sharing!
You are so welcome! 😻
I like your fishes on a little dishy! Did you use a reference photo for your fish is it fish from memory? 😊
Thank you! I think I started by looking at a bunch of pictures, but once I got started I went with my imagination 😊
@@ZuzusHausofCats 😁

You are the shiny star Helen! I don’t think you know what sparkle you give to TH-cam…always happy, bright and positive. Thank you for your generosity xxx
I love how emotional you are about the colours - 'I'm still not ready to tackle the blues'! 🤣
Hahaha I'm a bit weird about colour 🤣🤣🤣
I'd have a print of the colour swatches - so pretty!
Oooh I might do that - good idea!
This is fascinating - My mind is blown by the intricacies of colours and the process of analysing and translating them. Thank you for feeding my nerdy brain
