Kevin's Rambles
United Kingdom
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 3 ธ.ค. 2018
Hello and welcome to my channel. My name is Kevin and I plan to use this space to share with you my love of walking, nature and photography. Over recent months I have discovered a new hobby. I really enjoy making short informal videos of the places I visit, whether it is to show a stunning view, tell the story of a local legend or capture moments from rural events. I am just an amateur film maker with fairly basic equipment, but I have plenty of enthusiasm and a real love of our beautiful country and heritage. I hope you enjoy my little films as much as I love making them
Stratford Upon Avon: birth place and burial place of William Shakespeare
The information I have posted is just a snap shot of the history of Stratford-Upon-Avon.
If you would like to know more please click on the link below for the full history.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stratford-upon-Avon
Stratford-upon-Avon (/-ˈeɪvən/), commonly known as just Stratford, is a market town and civil parish in the Stratford-on-Avon district, in the county of Warwickshire, in the West Midlands region of England. It is situated on the River Avon, 91 miles (146 km) north-west of London, 22 miles (35 km) south-east of Birmingham and 8 miles (13 km) south-west of Warwick. The town is the southernmost point of the Arden area at the northern extremity of the Cotswolds In the 2021 census Stratford had a population of 30,495.
Stratford was inhabited originally by Britons before Anglo-Saxons and remained a village before the lord of the manor, John of Coutances, set out plans to develop it into a town in 1196. In that same year, Stratford was granted a charter from King Richard I to hold a weekly market in the town, giving it its status as a market town. As a result, Stratford experienced an increase in trade and commerce as well as urban expansion.
Stratford is a popular tourist destination, owing to its status as the birthplace and burial place of playwright and poet William Shakespeare. It receives approximately 2.7 million visitors a year. The Royal Shakespeare Company resides in Stratford's Royal Shakespeare Theatre.
Etymology
The name is a combination of the Old English strǣt (from Latin stratum), meaning 'street', ford, indicating a shallow part of a river or stream, allowing it to be crossed by walking or driving, and avon which is the Celtic word for river. The 'street' was a Roman road which connected Icknield Street in Alcester to the Fosse Way. The ford, which has been used as a crossing since Roman times, later became the location of Clopton Bridge.
A survey of 1251-52 uses the name Stratford for the first time to identify Old Stratford and the newer manors. The name was used after that time to describe the area specifically surrounding the Holy Trinity Church and the street of the Old Town.

Thank you for this Kevin and Sue. I really enjoyed this and your Video was very enjoyable to watch!! 😊 😊
I've always wanted to visit Stratford-upon-Avon, so thanks Kevin and Sue for such a lovely walkabout 👍
@annajones_007 Thank you, Anna 😊. You should go if you can.
What a charming town. I love that there are still clues to the past that are evident, if you have the eyes to look and Steve to do the research. Lovely video.
Hi Kevin Cynthia and Steve enjoyed your walk very interesting especially with all Steve's information made it even more interesting thanks Steve. Some very old and pretty building's in Petworth look forward to the next video on Petworth ❤
@fionahammond9396 Thank you, Fiona 😊. Petworth is steeped in history, Fiona. we only scratched the surface, really. We had been planning a visit there for a long time, we do intend to go back x❤️
Enjoyed this informative video very much. Wouldn’t it be great to go back in time when there were hardly any cars on the road ?
@IanFord-un6jr Thank you, Ian 😊. Really appreciate your comment. The cars are a pain in the rear end when you are trying to make a video or take photos.
Interesting village, very picturesque 😊
@michaelwhite8031 Thank you, Michael 😊
What a beautiful town, Kevin. Loved the stonework in the walls and the cobbled streets. That street which was once an open sewer, I assume now carries rain water down that central gulley. You had some wonderful weather for your ramble this time. I know of Petworth, but I've never visited. Thanks for showing us around.
@lionelmarytravels6003 Thank you, Lionel and Mary. Petworth is a lovely place to walk around. Yes, the gulley does carry the rain water now. We were very lucky with the weather.
Reminds me of my stay in Petworth but all looks very different on your video!
@jeanblemings5352 Thank you, Jean 😊. Places always look different on video.
Interesting. I haven't walked those streets since I was a child. We used to go for afternoon tea on a Sunday afternoon with my folks. Great video Kevin Cynthia and Steve; so much history 🥰
@LynnB_Ky Thank you, Lynn 😊. As I have said to Claire, you should go back and have a really good look round.
I need to return to Petworth village. Looks very interesting. My parents used to take us there as children frequently.
@claire76leach Thank you, Claire 😊. You should go and have a good look round.
I remember seeing the grave of a Canadian service man 15 year old volunteer among these fallen soldiers.
@mickgof Thank you, Mick 😊 Much appreciated. I must go back and look for that.
Thanks Kevin for sharing this lovely church with us. That mosaic behind the altar was gorgeous and the windows were beautiful 😊
@kezzaba1 Thank you, Kerry 😊. It was a really lovely church, and a spur of the moment visit.
For me his name is synonymous with the Dam Busters, and for those who like 'light' music he is there among the best.
@andrewnorris2 Thank you, Andrew 😊. Yes, the Dam Busters is the one that sticks in my mind.
Many thanks for telling this tragic tale about the Evans Family and Polish Pilot Rozmiarek from 18 OTU based at Hucknall. I have recently read an account of the Family opposite and they all escaped, looked after by the Salvation Army but sadly split up with relatives for a while. I will certainly let my fellow Volunteers at The Polish Squadrons Centre at RAF Ingham in Lincolnshire know about your Video and visit the Cemetery when next in the Hucknall area.
@simonmassey3747 Thank you, Simon 😊. My cousin who lives in Hucknall found out about the Evans family and asked me about making a video about them. I am happy that I have been to bring to many people who knew nothing about this tragic story. I would be most grateful if you let the volunteers about my video. Please keep me updated.
That was interesting Kevin, thank you. Pete is now googling Eric Coates.
@kezzaba1 Thank you, Kerry 😊. There is a lot about him on the Internet.
It's a small world. As I started watching I was thinking of the blue plaque on Selsey and then you beat me to it by the magic of you-tube!!
@jeanblemings5352 Thank you, Jean 😊. There are blue plaques in London as well
Thoroughly enjoyable Kevin and Sue! Most interesting and so very well put together!! 😊 😊
@traceymurphy3469 Thank you, Tracey 😊. What an interesting man Eric was.
Wow! two blue plaques
@johnf4883 Thank you, John 😊. And in a couple of locations in London.
Well done in finding these ,buddy .I have seen the Selsey one ❤
@ianmccaughan7121 Thank you, Ian 😊. This is all thanks to Sue she found out about him.
Hi Kevin great video a lovely well kept church and grave yard beautiful stain glass windows thankyou for sharing it with us 😀 x
@fionahammond9396 Thank you, Fiona 😊 It was just by chance I saw a sign to the church, so pleased I went and had a look 🤎 x
What a tastefully laid out and well looked after church 😃
Thank you Bob 🙂 Yes you are right it really is
Well done ,my father died of prostate cancer at 62 years old in 1999 .Still miss him .hurts a lot wish the science was as ad advanced back then as it is now ,early detection could have saved him ,so thank you for your work on behalf of my late dad and me ,God bless you and your family ❤.Lee
Hey Lee, Thank you for your comment 🙂 I am so sorry that your father passed away from Prostate cancer 😞We have to get to the point where tests are less intrusive and degrading for men. With people like Cynthia raising money for research hopefully it will go a long way towards it. Take care my friend.
Another interesting video Kevin and well done Cynthia on completing your challenge. I was brought up in Grayshott,so this area is very much my old stomping ground!
Thank you Ian 🙂Yes you would know the area very well. Hasnt she done brilliantly Ian, and raised I believe about £500 for research 🙂
@@KevinsRamblesabsolutely…….puts me to shame when I watch it from the comfort of my arm chair !!!
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anthony_Devis
Great video Kevin .The big tree that's been cut back hard used to have a rope swing that the council kept taking down for so called safety reasons .But every time it was removed .Some one I know kept putting it back for the kids 😂.
@ianmccaughan7121 Thank you, Ian 😊. The council always wants to spoil people's fun.
Well done, Cynthia and Kevin .That hill did look steep. Take it steady. Congratulations Cynthia for all the money you have raised for cancer. You are one special lady and you leave me standing on the miles you can do ❤😊
Thank you Ian 🙂It was bloody steep, She has done just brilliantly Ian and as you say a very special person. Raised I think about £500 in total?
Tell those cyclists to get on their bikes😅. Love the video, very atmospheric. Well done, Cynthia and you !
No wonder Shaking Stevens house fell down.
Thank You Kevin
@johnf4883 Thank you, John, for watching 😊
Sorry to hear you're in Sheet Kevin but l'm sure things will improve 😅
@michaelwhite8031 Thank you, Michael 😊. Let's hope they do lol.
@KevinsRambles nice little church. Thank you as always for showing us around !
Sheet near Steep - strange village names but a gorgeous church there - loved the angels and tiling by he altar.
@jeanblemings5352 Thank you, Jean 😊. Sheet near Petersfield. It's a really lovely church.
1:31 A big clunk in the sound track before people start looking round the house like I did.
@@marieascot Thank Marie. I wasn't looking round a house it was the church
Village Street not the village of Street in Somerset
My dad's second cousins husband had his bowel removed due to prostate cancer. It's terrible for him and limits his life. His wife died this year. I mist ring him.
Cynthia really put you through your paces .
Thank s Owen 🙂Didnt she just my god lol
Fair play to you on making such a lovely walk film .its just acperfect pace . And fair play to Cynthia for all the hard work ❤. Brilliant stuff
Thank you Owen 🙂We actullay loved being out in that mist, it made for something different in making my video. Cynthia has done brilliantly, she raised £154 from 28 people at the Kevins Rambles Christmas meet up yesterday and I think nearly £500 in total.
Loved this one Kevin and Cynthia. A gentle atmospheric stroll and still very autumnal. Well done Cynthia for completing your challenge ⭐
@LynnB_Ky Thank you, Lynn 😊 We really enjoyed the walk, apart from the last walk, my god that Hill was steep
Bravo Cynthia, a great achievement. The fog has its own special quality, beautiful, earthy colours, and who wants to see London! And that is such a stunning landscape whatever the weather! Nice one, Kevin, almost a new candidate for your other channel, Kevin's Tumbles ;))
@andrewnorris2 Thank you, Andrew 😊 . Very much appreciated. You are correct. The mist does make it that bit different and special and gives the video maker a different view of what he is recording. We don't want anymore Kevin's Tumbles lol 😆
I quite like misty walks they are very atmospheric in many senses! I was out in Arundel Park and it was a bit misty there but not as much. I think Cynthia took me up that hill too once. It is challenging! A fitting finale to the November month of walks !
@jeanblemings5352 Thank you, Jean 😊. I agree about the mist. Challenging, that is an understatement 😳.
Very Very well done Cynthia you did really well well done to you Kevin ❤😅
Thank you Fiona 🙂Very much appreciated 😘
Well done Kevin and Cynthia
Thank you, John 😊. Much appreciated.
Kevin's Rambles Christmas Meal is better than Glasto as he plays the spoons. :-)
Brookwood,Surrey is a large cemetery too.
Interesting but tragic tale.
@jeanblemings5352 Thank you, Jean 😊. Yes, I agree with you.
Meticulous research. Very interesting and, of course, tragic.
@SteveInTokyo-b8n Thank you, Steve 😊. Very tragic 😥
The poor Evans family. The cemetery certainly has some interesting history. Nice to keep your family history alive.
@michaelwhite8031 Thank you, Michael 😊. It is a very sad story indeed a whole family died 😔 💔. It was lovely to see there was some very caring people who got the headstone done for them.
The house at the top of the street that joins on to one which is on ruffs drive is the house you are looking for. It was rebuilt which is why those two houses are built from different bricks to the rest of the houses.
Thank you Hugo, I really appreciate the additional information, Next time I am in Hucknall I will take a look.
Thanks Kevin, what a tragic story! An interesting video nevertheless.
Thank you Kerry 🙂 A very sad story, I am really pleased that they have now got a proper headstone.
4:45 to the right a very interesting grave stone of a child. It says on the headstone the cause of death as being choked swallowing a stone! Very sad. Been here and done a video on the graves myself.
@RaymondoLeeTravel Thank you, Raymond 😊. I didn't see the other grave stone, that is very sad.
That's a sad story Kevin, but very interesting
@johnf4883 Thank you, John 😊. Yes, very sad 😔
Hi Kevin and SUE sad but very interesting video great that they are all remembered x
@fionahammond9396 Thank you, Fiona 😊. Yes, it's a very sad story, but as you say, it's good that they are now remembered x❤️
