Mahmoud Darwish Poetry is a channel dedicated to celebrating the life and works of Mahmoud Darwish (1941-2008), one of the most influential poets of the 20th century. Born in Palestine, Darwish’s poetry beautifully weaves themes of homeland, exile, love, and resistance, reflecting the Palestinian struggle and the universal human condition.
Mahmoud Darwish: I Do Not Sleep To Dream
I do not sleep to dream,
she told him. I sleep to forget you.
How good it is to sleep alone,
soundless in silk. Withdraw, so that I may see you
alone there. Think of me while I forget you.
I feel no pain from your absence;
neither the night nor your lips scratch my breast.
I sleep in my body utterly, sharing with no one.
Your hands do not tear my dress, nor do your feet.
Your feet knock against my heart like a rifle
as you shut the door.
I am in need of nothing in your absence.
My breasts are my own, my navel, my freckles, my mole,
my hands and my legs are my own.
Everything of mine is mine.
Keep the sensual pictures you took,
take them to entertain your exile,
and raise your fantasies like
a last toast. Say, if you wish, that passion is mortal.
But I shall listen to my body,
quietly, like a doctor. Nothing, nothing in your absence
causes me pain, except for the isolation of being!
🔸 Mahmoud Darwish

Mahmoud Darwish: I Do Not Know The Stranger
I do not know the stranger I do not know the stranger, nor his accomplishments… I saw a funeral, so I walked behind the coffin, like the others, bowing my head in respect. I found no reason to ask: who is this stranger? Where did he live, and how did he die, because the causes of death are many, one of which is the pain of life. I asked myself: does he see us, or does he see nothingness and reg...

[To a killer:] If you reflected upon the face of the victim you slew, you would have remembered your mother in the room full of gas. Is there any al-bahr content in the science of arudh in this poem?
Generally speaking, Mahmoud Darwish is often associated with modern, experimental poetry, but there are always instances where he incorporates elements of al-bahr into his works.
