Great video
Update: GWR have given me my delay repay payment of £49.25, meaning I essentially paid £26.15 for the entire journey from York to Bristol Parkway.
Great video.
Great video.
Great video.
Nice video, a journey that is very familiar to me as I live in Sheffield and have family in Nairn, not too far from Inverness. I make that journey a few times each year, joining at York and then onto Inverness. Although last year we decided to drive as the train fares struggle to compete with the fuel cost and flexibility of having a car, particularly when two of us make the trip. I have found first class prices tend to be a big jump even when booking in advance, so I tend to use Seatfrog to bid on an upgrade. I've won more than I've lost and never bid more that £20. LNER is one of the few first class services that is noticeably different to standard. The Azuma standard class offers great legroom but the seats are so thin and lacking in padding that for that length of journey they are back breakers. First class seats are a lot better. Also, the food and drink offering is generally very good. I tend to be on the train with the dish menu and had some really nice meals, some amazing offerings from GNER and early LNER days. They've scaled that back over recent years, still some good food on offer, but the menu you get and what is advertised for the service is hit and miss. Sometimes scaled back from dish to dine and even to deli. As they will say, the food and drink are complimentary and not guaranteed. I do like the Hop on Board ale. I've only ever suffered a few delays, it's a long route and the stretch from Darlington to Newcastle is temperamental when there are strong winds. If the weather is really bad in Scotland then flooding on parts of the line can happen but is rare. I've sat on the train at Kingussie for a couple of hours once and one time had a replacement coach from Inverness to Edinburgh, which was surprisingly good. My experience with the staff has been excellent, both with managing those delays and communicating what is going on. The polar opposite to EMR. I always book direct with LNER, you build up credit on your account, you don't pay booking fees and delay repay is automatic. I looked to claim for the few delays but found they'd already credited back to the card I'd used for booking. As you've shown, it's a scenic journey and if I'm travelling on my own then I prefer the train. That's probably one of the better value routes for distance/time but as rail fares jump it struggles to compete with a car and what that offers. That view may differ after a long delay or closure on the M74 or A9, though that is fairly rare.🙂
Love the old mark iv, it's a shame passenger comfort has taken a back seat, if you'll pardon the pun.
I was on the intercity 225 recently and it stills feels nice going on them other the 800 Azuma's, they will be a miss when they are gone.
The Class 387s are to be replaced by the Class 379s from next year. With some cascaded to Southern.
@@Andrewjg_89 The Class 379s look like great trains. They should be a big improvement
Indeed.
Have you ever tried Lumo to Newcastle and Edinburgh Waverley and to see what’s the difference.
No, I've not tried Lumo yet. I've got quite a bit to edit beforehand, but I'm sure I'll get around to it eventually. From where I live in the country, between Newcastle and Edinburgh will probably be my best bet.
Nice catch
As things go that isn't a bad price for a first class ticket with Breakfast. Try looking at some of the prices from places like London to Manchester or Newcastle they are eye watering more than the cost of flying. I would be annoyed though if I was served breakfast so late in the journey I had nearly reached my destination, and as a result couldn't enjoy the experience.
It's unusual to be served so late in the journey. They're normally very quick. Prices in an out of London can be very expensive at times.
Loved this. I don't know enough about N.E. England. Looks lovely| But surprised massive stuff like LNER stock can share lines with metro? Anyway, great vid.
They can run on the track no problem, but the problem was getting more paths that didn't interfere with the Metro, which they were unable to do
Great shot! I saw her at York.

Hello do you get a specific seat number or can you sit in anyseat in the carriage like in a normal train??. Can you get a more spacious seat if you pay more Please tell me as this is going to be the first time im traveling out of london and i dont know why but im nervous as its a 3 hour journey 😅
You can reserve a seat when you book. Your seat will have a red light when you're on the train. However, you can sit in any seat with a green light (or amber light as it's only partially reserved). Unfortunately, you can't choose your seat on GWR, only your preferences. If you're travelling with LNER, you can choose a seat when you book.
@Pulsarnix got it. thank you 😊
Super nice Video!!!
@@Thomas1980 Thank you
No stick to Grand Central rather than that LNER crap
Nice 👍
Interesting, I was expecting you to have to negotiate a huge drop down to the platform, but it doesn't look so bad with the HST. It's about four feet from a Class 170 Turbo or a Class 158 unit. Last time I used it I had to be helped down by five other passengers. Next time I shall ask for assistance - which might well be a taxi from Perth, I suspect!
...And you passed the Aberdeen train on the Inverness station approach, though to be fair, it does look as if it had probably been occupying your platform! Unlike the Tain service, it also wasn't the last of the day on that line, given that people travelling to stations east of Elgin are likely to travel via Aberdeen anyway... but, the main problem will have been the many miles of single track I expect - and the number of other trains it would also have disrupted. It's great that you get a free trip out of it - even trespassers (and I'm NOT advocating what they do) have thier uses, it would seem!!
As you say, it's never acceptable to trespass on the railway, but I've never been so happy to see a southbound sleeper service. There's a few minutes allowance at Tomatin, so if we hadn't stopped, we'd have arrived under an hour late, and I wouldn't have got as much money back.
It's a shame there aren't more services that operate North of Corby on this line on a daily basis.
I didn't realise there was a Sunderland to London service that went via Newcastle, though I can see why as the Cleveland area is very deprived and probably doesn't produce that many would-be passengers. It's a shame they don't have the catering underway by Durham, as you barely had time to digest your breakfast - although, I daresay only a limited number of people do such a journey in reality anyway. Good video - and you can speak, if you want to!
I plan to eventually add voice-overs to the videos, but sadly, I don't have a suitable space to record them where I'm living at the moment.
all that money spent, nah, wasted on yje new station and it looks worse than the old one
Never saw the old one, unfortunately. I'll have to take your word for it.
@@Pulsarnix it was bad, but at least it had a ticket office, i'm sure you can find pictures on the net
Excellent video, your journey was good. Sorry to hear about the withdrawal of the Glasgow central & Stirling services
Glad you enjoyed it

@luketrainspotteryt2007 I did, thanks. This was a fun one to film.
@Pulsarnix great to hear! Certainly a great Time by the looks! Definitely going to be doing it before the timetable change December 16th. The final N bound is the 13th and final southbound is 14th :)
Great video.
Great video.
Sunderland Station. A depressing, gloomy place.
Now now, be nice 😅 (although as stations go, it's not great)
Great video.

Enjoyed this video saw places from a railway view .
Thank you
Just before the Covid-19 pandemic struck in the Spring of 2020, Scotrail increased the price to its First Class supplements to take into account the enhanced catering offer which they intended to provide aboard their I7C short-formed HST sets, which was to include a Steward(ess) service of complimentary hot drinks and substantial snacks. In the end Scotrail decided to cut costs by just providing free biscuits and mineral water on a "help yourself" basis. Unfortunately, during long journeys, these often completely run out. The seats in First Class on Inter7City trains are comfortable because the carriages are ex-GWR rolling stock which has been re-branded. Incidentally, why won't you make singulars and plurals agree with each other in your commentary? "There is" (or "there's") should be used in relation to one item, such as "a table" whereas "there are" is used in relation to two or more items, such as a pair of "window curtains". The irritation which your bad grammar causes is a distraction from the otherwise excellent content of your video diaries.
Thanks for the very detailed comment. Sorry about the grammar. It has never been my strong suit and I miss things when proofreading sometimes. I'll try to be better in future, your feedback should help me. 🙂
So why didn't you catch the train from Paddington to Plymouth which runs one hour later and enjoy the delights of Pullman Dining in the Restaurant Car, which is available to passengers travelling on cheaper Standard class tickets? There's always space available in the Dining Car on Tuesday lunchtimes!
I'll hopefully try the Pulman Dining service eventually. I actually looked at it earlier in the year, but it was quite expensive. I'll have to remember there's space on Tuesday.
@@Pulsarnix - Next time buy a Standard APEX ticket and put the money you save towards the cost of your lunch in the dining car. Effectively you get a free upgrade to First Class. It's well worth doing! It's such a shame that so few people know about GWR's Pullman Dining service!
@KempSimon Thanks for the advice
Nice trip with good food and snacks !!
Thank you, it was really nice
It's just a shame that this and the Stirling will be lost from the December Timetable change
It's always a shame to lose services, but I understand why they're going. The Glasgow ones are especially useful if, like me, you live on the East Coast and want to avoid a potentially messy change in Edinburgh.
Will it be gone forever
It may return one day, but as of the December timetable change, it's gone permanently. Obviously, in 20 years, it may come back, but who knows.
@@Pulsarnix I did hear that LD are looking into running the route .
Puzzles me TfW only ordered 2 and 3 car units. Is capacity an issue?
2 and 3 car units have their uses. On branch lines where passenger numbers are lower, 2 cars can be very useful. That being said, I'd have ordered 4 car units instead of 3 car ones.
Good video
@@tonygraham7658 Thank you. I'm glad you enjoyed it 🙂
Sorry. The trains are wonderful and the service excellent. But the seats are bloody awful.
The seats certainly could be better. This seems to be a recurring theme with newer rolling stock. I don't understand why seats can't be comfortable anymore.

i like it i been who else
I never knew there was an LNER train from Sunderland, but to be fair, I wouldn't normally be around Sunderland Station at 05:39 in the morning. When I started to watch the video, I assumed it would travel south, ie towards London, similar to the Grand Central trains do, so was surprised to see it heading north to Newcastle before heading down to KGX. Great video !
I'm glad you enjoyed it. To be fair to you, there's only two a day, one northbound and one southbound. The silly time of day that they run probably doesn't help. The northbound one gets to Sunderland at 23:20!
@@Pulsarnix thanks for your reply. Just looked on the internet and see LNER will stop running this Sunderland service from December 2024. Come to think of it, I vaguely remember seeing something about this on the local news a few months ago, but I probably didn't take much notice, as it wouldn't affect me as I live in Whitley Bay, which is near Newcastle.
Yippee no more LNER crap just stick with the tried service, why head to Newcastle, north, and waste 20 mins, get the Grand Central south and save time.
Feels really weird to see an Azuma screeching through. So used to grand Central, northern and metro only.
There's only two LNER services a day into Sunderland. It felt a bit strange too tbh 😅
