Rockhounding Ohio for Flint - the State Gemstone
มุมมอง 6K3 ปีที่แล้ว
I stopped by Nether's Farm in Ohio to rockhound some of Ohio's State Gemstone - Flint. It was my first trip there and it was awesome! I ended up with some AMAZING flint in colors from blue to red to orand and everything in between. Nether's Farm is a pay site which at the time was $7.50 .50 a pound. For this low fee you get to mine in a multitude of pits that they have dug out. It seemed like e...

I added some macro pictures of the crystals at the end of the video. It was a fun day filled with beautiful crystals, cicadas and a nice thunderstorm. I had just spent the day hounding quartz crystals in Pennsylvania (thus the few slip u...

The site is family friendly a...

Face polishing is a technique where a portion of a rock is polished leaving the rest in the natural state. It can be used on any size rock. The equipment that I use in this video is a 4 1/2 inch variable speed grinder/polisher and a set of wet/dry diamong polishing pads. You can find th...

    Is there a legal spot that you would share to go look for crystals? As we've bought books, researched, joined clubs, and are lucky if we ever get to go dig let alone for crystals. Thank you.

    I've been digging there for over 20 years. If it's next to a tree, stay away from it. The nappers know the good material.. and they tend to throw it towards the trees to know it's something they shouldn't look at again.. for those of you doing lapidary or tumbling, it's always worth the look.. Just remember it's an 89-year-old lady running this property. Please respect it.. take your trash.. and pay when you leave!!

    Since you have been there, can you tell me how accessable the pits are for someone with a handicapp? Can you drive close enough to the pits that someone who using a walker could get to the edge of the pit and sit in a folding chair while i go down into the pit and do the actual mining? My girl had a back Surgery that didnt go well, and she has very limited use of one leg because of it, and has to use a walker to get around. My plan was to pull in as close as i could to a pit, get her sit up in a folding chair and Bring the Matererial up for her to sort while I dig and collect. But I cant really tell from any of the videos I have found about Nethers farm how far in you can drive or how much of a walk it is to the first couple pits. Thanks in advance.

    • @chewy9725
      @chewy9725 ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely not safe for somebody in a walker.. You can only drive your car to the edge of the property and then you have to walk back and be able to go down into the pits.. Flint is incredibly sharp and dangerous and pops. Lots of tires. That's why we can't drive back anymore.. But there's always surface collecting

    • @vance7354
      @vance7354 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@chewy9725 Well I would be the one going up and down into the pits, my girl wont be trying to go into the pits themselves with her walker. I was gonna have her sort what I collect. But she will have a Chair and not be doing the digging or climbing in and out of the pits.

    Heading up to the red. Just a couple old guys, anything I should know? Pop's and I,😉 old and older. Watched all the videos I could find, seems different areas produce different? Is this a huge eroded feature? Or a upthrust of deeper built material.. Volcano with rotten Rock revealing the harder material? In videos I see Jasper, agate, seams, geode's some coming out of fresh cleaven Rock. Also the digs, looks Hit and miss like a old worked bottle dump. Little spots in between and under burden... Good day and HIGH Fives!

    It's too bad Oregon land management wouldn't just come by periodically with a skid steer and fill in those holes. Maybe even drill a well that they put a hand pump on so people could both get a drink and wash off their rocks. But that would be far too sensible an idea and use of public funds.

      I also live in Maryland. I always find myself going to Pa. The Parks and waterways Are Amazing? I've been to over 30 parks between Maryland and PA. It is hard finding good specimens. I always look for crystals,amethyst, geodes,fossils and Indian artifacts. I've found many Indian artifacts when I was not looking for them. Many of them I didn't know they were Indian artifacts until 15 years later when I learned more about them. Found hundreds of garnets. Still looking for the mother load. But I don't think it will be in Maryland. I llivr North Central Maryland, of the PA Line....
