Hi Darren. Good to see you. 😊 5:56
Hey Marg! How are you doing? I see you found one of my older workshops
Thanks for streaming earlier Darren. It's 9.24 am here in a very windy Ireland.
Hi Jane you're welcome, thought I'd just turn on the camera since I was doing some sketching practice :) must be cold ? Summer over here 😅
I use those little slots for tube paint … like a dot of paint. Aside from that, the two paints are interestingly different. Once you get a chance to play with both, come back to do an update.
That's a good idea. I did that on my larger schmincke set. But it's ridiculously messy now as if you close the tin before dried, it runs everywhere.
Hi Darren, sorry if I'm a bit out of topic. If you only have 9 slots, what colour would you choose for the pallets please?
I'd choose two of each primary colour (yellow, red and blue) - a warm and cool version of each. Then a green, brown and neutral tint.
You can get by with 5 colours really. 3 primaries, brown and neutral tint
@@WatercolourMentor I am a beginner and your channel is super helpful. If I to choose 3 primaries, should they be warm or cool? Also, what is neutral tint, please? Sorry, I'm a new kid in watercolour block 😊😁
Good evening Darren! Just came from watching your Rembrandt stream!
Hi Angie :) yeah just making some shorter art supply videos that I'm sketching with today.
Good evening Darren! How do you identify colors there and prevent them from drying
I memorise the location of each one, and also put the warm colours on the top row, cool colours on bottom row. In terms of drying, no need to worry as they are designed to rewet easily.
Are the prices you ask for your courses in American dollars…..I’m up here in Canada
Hi Joyce, yes they are. I'm running a Halloween special at the moment so you can get the program for $247: watercolourmentor.thinkific.com
Awesome
Watching from france, hi can you tell me the weight of your paper and is it rough or smooth...derek
It's 300gsm and medium/cold press paper :)
Wow your work are truly amazing!
Thank you 😊
Enjoyed this a lot. I’m sure that is York Minster, Yorkshire England. Its stunning inside and out
Awesome, yes it looks beautiful...
How do they compare to the BOSOBO brushes or Panart
Hmm not sure mate, I haven't used them. But check if they are using squirrel hair, that's the most important thing.
Awesome, really enjoyed this one
Cheers, great to hear Jeff!
Hi Darren so delighted you’re doing the Lunapark. I did ask for it - and I appreciate you choose this lovely subject. Just tonight I was in St Kilda and saw the colourful Lunapark. I will definitely paint it very soon. PS. You are such a great teacher, can’t wait to have real classes with you 👏😊
Hi Monika, yes I thought it might have been you to asked haha. Post your painting in our group later if you get a chance :) yeah let's see how we go. I need to find a place to host them first. -Darren
Yes you said so.👍 I hope you find a suitable venue for regular classes. Maybe even Plein air events. Weather is getting better now. Finally spring is coming. BTW I live in Bayside area near the beach. 😊👍
You say these are easy paintings for a beginner. I’m a beginner and I don’t find these easy. The drawings are hard to follow so I never get to the painting part. Guess I need reeeeaaaaalllllly easy😮
Hi Joyce, I'll try some others that are simpler and steam them in some shorter workshops. There's tracing stencils for these on Patreon too that might help :)
Good work 🎉🎉🎉 1:07:50
thanks Maya :)
Hi Darren, this is my first tutorial with you. I'm in Eastern Ontario, Canada. I have appreciated it very much. Thank you. Still learning!
Hi Diane :) Nice meeting you and I'm glad you found my workshop helpful. There's some previous ones you might want to check out too.
Thank you Darren. It was a great presentation. How about we paint Lunapark and Flinders Station; there such great icons. 😊👍🇦🇺
Luna Park is on my list! Have done Flinders a couple times already. Thanks Monika :)
@@WatercolourMentor Hi Darren that’s great news very much appreciated. Till next time 👍 PS. How to I find Flinders Station?
❤Hello from Florida. Sometime can you do a Florida woodland scene. Thank you so much--I learn so much from you and appreciate your loose but realistic sty l e!
Even just seeing your other work for a moment, you are so gifted
Aw thank you :) hope to see you this weekend at our live workshop.
How much did China pay you for this "recommendation"?
I wasn't paid anything to create this video. The Amazon affiliate link earns me a small commision as mentioned. It's a decent set, was surprised with the quality.
Can you tell me what size brushes you’re using?
Hi Sue, I can't remember in that particular video. But I generally use a large mop brush for the first wash, as long as it holds a sharp point. From then, I use smaller synthetic brushes for details.
I learnt so much and was inspired to paint my mum...soon. This is a lovely shot of your grandma :)
That was the last time she could live independently. Still doing fine but nice to remember the good times.
Thanks for the refresh on the techniques, Darren. Practising as daily sketches, straight with brush. Makes a difference with layering with either method and dilutions for sure. Trying to get my brush mileage, especially on humans. less so with cars lol
A little practice each day goes a long way. I should take my own advice these days lol.
Hi from Denmark
Welcome Marietta :)
From California. Are these videos viewable on a computer? The small screen is on my phone is not terrific.
Yes just find my channel on TH-cam from your computer and you can enlarge the screen there.
Cool
I’ve only tried a grid once but see now it was so small. Trying to find number and letters drove me crazy, so I’ve never used it since. This looks much more doable.
Yeah using larger grid makes it easier to prepare (but less accurate). Also helps you develop your drawing skills more.
I love these travel brushes, not just for travel! So well made, and inexpensive yet good quality for a long lasting brush!!
I use them mostly at home and and they make excellent detailing brushes too :)
Love the blue used in the sky
It's Holbein cerulean blue, my fav
@@WatercolourMentor It makes such a bold but beautiful statement.
Hi from Cape Town SA ❤
Welcome Irene!
Just come across your live. Haven’t done landscape before and really enjoyed your demonstration. I surprised myself at how I could follow your demonstration and achieve a reasonable painting. I am guilty of giving up half way through my paintings but persevered and I am happy with what I ended up with. Thank you.
Always a good idea to make it to the end and then see whether you like it or not then! See you at the next workshop Eileen :)
Don't forget the people 😂
This is really lovely ❤
Hi Darren! I have a set with brushes exactly like yours but the colours; mine are forest green, not red. I actually thought they were the same when I saw yours, so I went and had a look. Mine are not marked Golden but Fuumuu, and are made in China. I payed almost nothing for them but they are better than those I have for my studio. I'll still save them for when going outdoors. Sizes 4, 8, and 12. They're perfect! Enjoy!
They are probably all made in the same factory, and sold/re-branded by different companies. But yes, they are awesome brushes and just as good as ones that are 3x the price in my experience!
I came here to say the same, I also have the Fuumuui but mine are wooden above the ferrule. I have a synthetic set like these that have an AMAZING point on every one of them! Have you tried their quills yet ? Talk about a pointed brush my goodness they are amazing I immediately purchased a second set for back up and sent a set to a dear friend in Holland because I know she will love them as much as I do
Thank you! Your videos are always greatly appreciated!
Hey Summer, you're welcome! I'm glad you like them 😊
Thank you Darren. Going to Greece in a few months. You have inspired me.
That's awesome, have a blast and hope to see some of your paintings 😊
has Saturated fats :(
Huh? haha
Nice!!
Thank you 😊
i was wondering that can u fit it in the winsor and newton field plus box , if we remove the notch which holds the tiny brush?
Yes it probably will fit, but will be difficult to hold the brush properly without the handle piece.
@@WatercolourMentor thanks for replying..it will not bother me if its held securly or not as long as the whole thing fits ..i have ordered these travel brushes in natural hair ..they r ariving tomarrow..very excited to try them.
hello .. i was thinking to get the natural hair ones .. i am a beginner and is told they hold more water and are easier to work with
These are synthetic but perform very well, compared to some sable ones that I have. I don't go for sable anymore.
Daren, I could't find the big size. Do you know were I can buy those?
Hmm, maybe try here: artgoldenmaple.com/products/watercolor-squirrel-hair-paint-brush-professional-artist-mop-round-pointed-fine-tip-painting-brush-size-2-artist-quality-supplies-paintbrush-for-water-color-inks-gouache-tempera-craft-paints
Got my 36 color pack more than 10 years ago, and except 2 colors which were thicker and had a little dryed in the tubes, i can still refill my palet. A very good investment i presume 😊😁
Yep I've used mine for years and also have run classes, let students use them, and most the tubes still have paint in them!

I hate that I missed the live! I had to be up for work at 4am and had miscalculated the time difference for some reason. Anyways I found you on Skillshare and am now following you. I will be doing this line and wash on my next days off and look forward to learning from you on Skillshare. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and talent.
Hi Leah, glad you found me there, I've got a bunch of classes on Skillshare, maybe half of everything I made. It's a good start. Hope you can make the next one. I'm glad you're enjoying my classes! -Darren
Learning line & wash and this is a fabulous tutorial! Thank you so much!
You're welcome! I'm glad you enjoyed my workshop 😊 see you at the next one. -Darren
I have never signed into TH-cam before. I’ve watched it lots of times, but never signed in. Because I wasn’t signed in, I could not make comments during the live stream. Shortly before the video ended, I signed in, but could not find a way to make comments. I enjoyed watching this workshop. I have painted oils, but know nothing about watercolors. Cynthia “Cyd” Hebert
Glad you could made it Cyn! I think you can also add to the chat when it's streaming. Watercolours is more challenging than acrylics/oils in my opinion but magical when it works out!
I love watching you do your magic!
Aw thanks Mary !
I held off doing Line and Wash for lack of knowing how to mix the paint/water. However, this tutorial is so relaxing and instructional, I'm going to try it this day! Thank you. I also subscribed and joined your FB page.
Hi Patrick, that's great - this is a pretty good intro to drawing and painting so let me know how you go and if you have any questions while you're giving this a go. Hope to see you at the next workshop. I'm scheduling it in now for about a month's time. -Darren
Watching from Monday Alabama.
Welcome Floyd!
