I play old time hymns and gospel music on the banjo in mostly old time 2 finger style picking. And a little clawhammer. All the hymns and gospel songs in the videos are our own arrangements unless otherwise stated on the video. Our hope is that through old time gospel hymns and gospel songs on banjo, we can bring glory to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and hopefully be a blessing and encouragement to those watching. Maybe a few fun songs here and there too. Also some videos on how to repair, set-up, replace banjo parts and adjust your banjo. And walk through 2 finger and other banjo lessons.

Near The Cross (Jesus Keep Me Near the Cross)

A beautiful hymn for anytime but especially around this Easter season. This hymn's words were written by Fanny Crosby along with over 8500 gospel songs. Blind at six weeks old she, at 6 years old, began writing words to songs. She was once asked by an evangelist "If you could have just one wish granted, what would it be?" She replied, "I'd wish that I might continue blind the rest of my life. B...

"In The Sweet By and By" is a favorite old hymn written by two friends, Sanford Fillmore Bennett and Joseph P. Webster in the 1800's. Mr. Bennett wrote the words and Mr. Webster wrote the music. They produced the hymn within 30 minutes and immediately began singing the hymn. Lryics: Refrain: In the sweet by and by, We shall meet on that beautiful shore. In the sweet by and by, We shall meet on ...

I like that you do a lot of Gospel type songs on the banjo. I've been playing guitar for 25+ years, and really like playing church type music. Now that I'm learning the banjo, I'd like to transfer some of the songs I like over to the banjo, and it's nice to hear how someone else does it. I've learned the basics of clawhammer, 2 finger, and bluegrass style, but not a whole lot more than that. BTW, is there any cheap land in your neck of the woods? I live in Indiana, but would like to try life in a different state. Keep up the good work!
Thanks. I've had a stroke so I'm not able to get out much so I just don't know about the land. Wish I could help. Blessings in Christ.
Thank you so much
THANK YOU! You're just what I've been looking for.
Thank you.
Working on my fingers for chords. Kinda short stubby finger so it will take a litlke training. Going slow but enjoying using my right hand a little better. Thank you for all your help.
Don't let the short stubby fingers stop you. i've seen some outstanding banjo players with short stubby fingers. A lot of times tilting and bending your wrist a little more will help you reach those strings. Check out Barry Abernathy on youtube -amazing. Blessings in Christ. Shawn
Yes, if we practice slowly, we won't make mistakes, and if we don't make mistakes, the muscle memory of the hand doesn't know how to play wrong... have a happy day!
Thank you for your wonderful mandolin playing. Yes I couldn't agree with you more on muscle memory. Blessings in Jesus Christ. Shawn
i want to learn what you are teaching.
Thank you for your videos sir, I pray that you continue to recover 🙏🏼
I'm glad you found the videos useful. I praise God for your prayers, they are needed. I'm still improving. I'm not able, right now, to play the banjo but I have taken up the mandolin because I can hold a guitar pick. I hope to be releasing some mandolin videos fairly soon. I'm not giving up on the banjo. Praise God for you and blessings in Jesus Christ. Shawn
I'm 71 years old and want to learn the banjo. I like your style and back porch playing is where I want to be. Thank you for doing this. It is a blessing to have some one teach me the old ways. I miss that terribly. That was the way I learned to farm. In the field, sweating and learning from all the older hands. Hymns are beautiful when you hear them on the banjo.Thank you again.
Thank you so much for your kind words. I love the old ways too. You will learn to play the banjo, just take your time and go at your own pace. I praise God for you and blessings in Jesus Christ. Shawn
Hi Shawn.. hope you are doing well!? God bless you
I'm doing very well and still recovering. Thank you for your kind words. Blessings in Jesus Christ.
Glad to hear that 🙏👍 God bless you as well
Amen❤😂
Great job on a beautiful song!
Thank you very much, Blessings in Jesus Christ.
Thank you so much! I'm interested in learning banjo to play worship at my church and in my small group. So glad to find your channel! Thank you for sharing John 3:16! God Bless You Brother!
Thank you so much, Brother. Blessings in Christ. Shawn
Sorry, but you need more lighting. I can't hardly see you or your hand but I'm enjoying your Listen
I'm so sorry about that. If I could go back and change it I would but I can't right now. I'm still recovering from strokes. Blessings in Jesus Christ. Shawn
Thank you so much!!! This is MY FIRST SUCCESSFULLY PLAYED BANJO TUNE!!!! what a perfect and poignant one! I was lost, I was blind, but now I can see that there is hope for me!!!! You are a phenomenal teacher, God bless you! I will remember this moment for the rest of my life!
That is music to my ears. Thank you for your kind words. Blessings in Jesus Christ. All glory to Him. Thanks again.
I look forward and appreciate your warm welcoming at the beginning of your videos.
I like the ditty good Dogs Get Biscuits Daily, to remember the tuning. You know, gDGBD. I heard it from a claw hammer player. It helps me though and I hope it helps somebody else. I am new to the Banjo and don't trust me inexperienced ear. Hopefully I will develop an ear like Banjologic, shows one day.
i like that.
Thank you! Im 73 and from Australia. My Grandad played the Banjo and now I am watching you to learn too. My Mums name was Grace and I have started learning Amazing Grace from you. it might take a while!!!
Don't give up, it will come. I'm sure you will do fine. Thank you and blessings in Jesus Christ. Shawn
I've had a banjo sitting around getting dusty for years so I just spent the afternoon on TH-cam looking through "how to play banjo" lessons. Most start off with bluegrass rolls - far too complicated for me. Then I came across your lesson for basic 2-finger banjo, which is just what I need. So thanks for this. I'll give you more feedback after I've followed along a bit more. Oh, and you got me when you said, "It's got nothing to do with talent." Love it.
it looks good and I'm ready to go
Thank you so much for doing these...I don't know if you know this hymn or not but could you do a lesson on I've Never been sorry it's in the old red back hymnal
Yes, I've heard the hymn. I will have to listen to it to get the melody in my head so I can put it to the banjo. While I would love to do a lesson on this hymn, but right now I'm still recovering from 2 strokes. However, it seems my right hand is coming back but for now I'm playing the mandolin because I can use a guitar pick in my right hand. I'm just not able to pick the banjo at this time. Lord willing hopefully, in the not too distant future, I will be back at it. I'm very sorry that I cannot do a lesson on the banjo at this time. It's people like you that are really a blessing to me to know that banjologic has helped you out. It's all about serving Christ and hopefully being a blessing to my brothers and sisters. Your prayers would be very much appreciated. I hope to upload a video soon to try to get banjologic kicking again. Meanwhile thank you for your patience and understanding. Blessings in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Shawn
Use a nylon string setup if you want to learn without picks.
Hi there, I don't know if you check your comments anymore, but I just wanted to send some thanks your way for making banjo videos I can follow. I'm not musically inclined at all, I'm way more visual with my creativity, but your lessons are the first I could really learn from after a few weeks of trying a kazillion other online teachers. Thank you for your kindness, patience, and encouraging demeanor. I can now play Amazing Grace. One of my Dad's favorite songs of all time. (He is a retired Southern Baptist preacher.) I will play this for him soon and it will mean a lot. Thank you for this gift of banjo knowledge, my friend!
Hi, thank you so much for your kind words. That is my hope, it will help teach the banjo and the good old hymns. Thank you so much for blessing me, you have encouraged me to want to start teaching again. I've had some health problems but hope to be doing some more videos soon, Lord willing. I'm so glad you will get to play Amazing Grace for your dad. I'm sure it will mean a lot to him. That hymn says it all. Blessings in Jesus Christ, my friend.
Thankyou for this great lesson, I am 64yrs young and just started to learn playing 2 fingered Banjo, Your first lesson has got me keen to practice each and every day, THANK YOU 😁👍👌🪕
Glad to hear this is an encouragement to you. Keep on picking. Blessings in Christ.
I just got a 5 string. I like the way you play. I want to play hymns too. Thanks
Thanks
Want to learn your method
Hi there, I just stumbled upon this video. Thank you. Feels like you’re talking to a friend sitting in the same room. Glad you’re doing this. I’m going to dive in and do some pickin’.
The accent is what makes this best. I like ‘larnin’ from you
I enjoyed your lesson 1 video and I plan to watch the remainder of the lessons, but I have a question. I don’t have a banjo but I have a 4 string tenor guitar that I’ve tuned to standard banjo tuning. Your teaching with 5 string banjo, how would your picking pattern apply to learning 4 string banjo?
Thank you for watching our videos and thank you for your comment. I really can't teach you much on the 4 string, I'm strictly a 5 string guy. The tenor banjo teaches just like the 5 string except without the 5th string. You can play the same melody notes that I use in my lessons but if you are wanting to play 4 string, I would suggest going to a site that teaches tenor banjo. If you want to play the style that I teach, I would try to find a good used 5 string banjo. I'm sorry, I wish I could help you more on this. You could go to my video called It Is Better Farther On. That hymn would fit the 4 string really good, as I do not use the 5th string in that song. You can even use your guitar pick for that if you choose to, also. I believe that is the best I can do for you. Blessings in Jesus Christ. Shawn
I am here to say ,,, My new open back banjo came yesterday, it is a Recording King OT25 and it is looking good.. A beautiful instrument.. I don't know if it needs a name, like some folks give theirs.. LOL 😊
I know that you are very excited. I know how it feels to get a banjo. It truly is a blessing from God. You might not set out to name your banjo but you will eventually name it anyway. After awhile, even though you didn't set out to name it, there will be a name that will just pop out of your mouth one day and that is what you will end up calling it the rest of your life. At least that's how it works for me anyway. God bless you, brother. Always in Christ, Shawn.
This might be a silly question, but is there any particular reason to use the index finger rather than the middle finger? The middle finger feels more natural to me, so I'm just wondering. I've practiced to this video with both fingers just in case haha. Thank you so much, this is super helpful!
If the middle finger feels more natural for you, by all means use it. There are many 2 finger banjo players that use the middle finger. Whatever works best for you. Blessings in Christ.
Awesome, thank you!
What a godsend! What a great teaching style. Like/Subscribe/Bell
Thank you very much.
My discouragement is that I have large hands and tried all the techniques suggested wherever suggestions could be to fret anything without muffling the adjacent strings.
Don't let that discourage you. People with extremely large hands and fingers are some of the best players there is. You can choose a banjo with a larger nut width or you can develop, over time, calluses on the ends of your fingers and that will prevent you from having to push down so hard. Pushing down hard without clause fingers will cause your fingers to flatten out. But more importantly, be sure that you are coming straight down with your fingertip on the string. That should solve your problem. It just takes time. I know a lot of beginning players that have their fingers angled and all it takes is a slight angle to muffle the strings. I hope this helps. Blessings in Jesus Christ. Shawn
Suggestion…put some light on yourself and the banjo. Old folk like me ant see what your teaching.
When I am able to make more videos, I will do the best I can to get more light. Blessings in Jesus Christ. Shawn
BanjoLogic, please put more videos up. Nothing for a year, I hope you okay. I really miss your lessons. Kind Regards - Gary from England.
I'm sorry, Gary, I've not been able to put up any videos lately. I had a couple of strokes about a year and a half ago. God has blessed me and I'm getting a lot better now. My plan is to do more lesson videos hopefully in the near future. I'm not able to pick my banjo right now so I've been playing the mandolin because I can use a pick. The plan is to get Botox treatments in my hand and fingers and hopefully this will help. I'm sorry, I did not mean to leave folks hanging. Lord willing, I will be back. Stay posted so when I am able to do a video, you will be notified. Thanks for the comment. Blessings in Jesus Christ. Shawn
I don not see a cog or gear?
Well it depends on how many beat per measure you are looking at. The easiest way I've found to incorporate it into the melody, is to learn and play the melody notes to the song then after that just start incorporating the bum ditty where it sounds best to you. Especially where there are longer notes in the melody, that's a good place to start incorporating them. After awhile it will become second nature to you. Yes, it has been over a year since I put any videos out because I had a stroke that I'm recovering from. I had to start playing the mandolin because I can't pick or clawhammer the banjo for now. I'm going to be getting botox treatments in my hand that will hopefully help. Hopefully I will be able to resume banjo lessons again soon. Thank you for your comment and I hope this helps. Blessings in Jesus Christ.
Just found your channel, love your teaching, but have a question, on the bum ditty roll, is the bum beat, beat 1 a quarter note, and the dit-ty note be 2&, two eight notes? I notice the last comment was over a year ago, are you still putting up videos? My problem is I know the rolls but have trouble incorporating the melody, Thank you for your time on creating these videos, God Bless
I learned Will the Circle be unbroken both with tabs, and with 2-finger style. I have an old hymn called "The Hallelujiah side" using 2-finger style (no tabs) with a couple of Scruggs licks at the beginning. That old hymn I was able to figure out myself, using the bum diddie roll - all on the second fret. Your method is great approach, especially since I already know so many old hymns from our street church. My next move is to bring it to fiddle jam.
Good stuff!
When is this dude coming back
Only the Lord knows because I'm trying to recover from a stroke but Lord willing I will be back. Blessings in Jesus Christ.
@@banjologic speedy recovery man 👍
Is there any way we can get a printed copy of your Amazing Grace? It's great. Do you do any modern country music like "Country Road" by John Denver? It was the song when I was in Viet Nam.
I'm sorry, I don't do tab. I mainly do hymns and gospel songs but I did a video of Country Roads and if we find it, I will upload it for a period of time and will let you know. I will take it back off after you see it because want to mainly keep the channel with hymns and gospel songs. That being said, Country Roads is a great song. I have deleted it though but we will look for it. Also thank you for your service. My dad, too, served in Viet Nam. That is something he would not talk about much. He passed away a year ago this month. God bless you and thank you for watching. Blessings in Jesus Christ. Shawn
Shawn, Just picked up a banjo and your my teacher. God bless you brother
Thank you and blessings in Jesus Christ to you too.
I was watching another video on two finger style and the pattern was that the thumb picks the melody and plays the 5th as a drone. The 1st finger picks the 1st string as a drone also. Am I maybe just getting ahead of myself on this?
That would be correct but as you progress you will find that the first finger will play the melody note on the 1st and 2nd string but always plays drone on 1st string. But for now go ahead and do it the way you are doing it but use the index finger to play the melody note when it is on the first string and as you progress, try moving your index finger to the 2nd string when the melody note is on the 2nd string. That being said, play it the most comfortable way it is for you. Happy picking and blessings in Jesus Christ.
Hello there watching you from the uk and would like to say thank you very much ! Be lucky.
Thank you very much. Blessings in Jesus Christ.
Well done, nice and simple
