Old school sprinklers
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 20 ก.ย. 2018
I have always enjoyed being involved with irrigation sprinklers my entire life, even at a young early age. I have been fortunate enough to have been able to work with them either in the installation of new systems or maintaining existing systems thru out my working career from the 1970’s till retirement into the mid 2000-teens either in a private and or public sector.
Included are many Lawn Pop-Ups and Shrub Sprays, Bubblers, Impacts, Cam Rotors, Gear Driven Rotors, Ball Drives, and others.
Many manufacturers here are Thompson, Buckner, Rainbird, Rain-O-Mat, Champion, Febco, Skinner, Moody, Toro, Raintrol, H.L. Gee, Aqua Dial along with many other brands.
A few old Hydraulic Mechanical controllers along with some of there control valves will be seen.
Finally, we were able to save many old manufacturers catalogs which will be seen here on occasions.
Hope you will enjoy viewing these “Old School Sprinklers” Treasures.

Sawyer Nursery Beverly Hills Full Circle Lawn Sprinkler

Sawyer Nursery Beverly Hills Lawn Sprinkler. I have never heard of this one before. So I guess we can add this one to that list. This was found at my local scrap metal recycling dealer. It has seen many years of abuse from gardening equipment and still functions. Even though the condition is in rather poor shape, I thought it still was a good candidate to show. Thanks for watching.
Dole Flow Control Valve @ 3/4 GPM
มุมมอง 1853 หลายเดือนก่อน
This is something that we do not discuss to much in the old irrigation industry is The Dole Flow Control Valve. It was often used in watering tree wells. This was used as a different type of watering bubbler that you would normally often see from other irrigation manufacturers. This particular valve would deliver a 3/4 GPM and has 1/2” IPS pipe thread. Also, we would have a couple of elbow fitt...
Old Full Circle Sprinkler. From the 30’s, 40’s? Need Help to identify Manufacturer

This old full circle sprinkler is a guess from probably from the 30’s, 40’s. It was most likely on a piece of property when purchased to build the family home on in the early 1950’s. It almost looks like something you would see from old movies back in that time era. It has some very faded writing on the top that is worn off and beyond being able to read it. Buckner 12JR Full Circle Cam Rotor

Buckner 12JR Cam Rotor. Possibly made in the years between the 1930’s to 1960’s. It is possible that this numbering was done prior to the four digit numbering system seen in the late 30’s to the 60’s. So it’s a speculative guess that’s it’s from the 30’s. Hello I am leaving this comment because I saw you left a comment on a video of a guys C99 trencher running and your comment said you have a c9 and I just picked up a c7 and got it running and am trying to figure out why my chain only runs in reverse so I wanted to ask if your engine rotates clockwise when looking at it from the flywheel end and such just trying to bring mine back around and can't figure out what I got going. Thanks.
@@sdrancher742 Hello, Congratulations on your C7! On my C9 trencher I have a Wisconsin engine model # AENLD. When I stand looking at the flywheel side it turns clockwise and the other side where the 3 fan belts that I have that are connected to the drive pulley runs counter clockwise (opposite) from the flywheel direction or clockwise when you stand in front of this drive pulley. This is thru a gear reduction box that is directly part of the engine. I don’t know what the gear reduction rate is, but I do know that the Wisconsin engine is suppose to be rated at 9-1/2 horse. It also has a rope pulley for starting the engine and can only go in one direction. I’m not sure what a model C7 looks like. If they are similar in design with the same engine or what. I hope this little bit of information helps. I wish you the best of luck on your journey with you trencher.
Great looking spray head. I just picked up a couple of those of the summer. Great spray pattern that doesn’t get to misty. And a big thank you for having these online…here is the winter and I have seen a sprinkler running except for your and in appreciate that. Thanks again!!
I’m glad that you are enjoying the spray head and thanks for watching

I really enjoy watching the stubby brass pop-up spray’s. The coverage they provide is fantastic.
I agree with you, they have great coverage. Thanks for watching.
What a great pair of sprinklers. I really believed that a rotating stream sprinkler was of a more modern invention. Where I live, it seems like we either had impact sprinklers for large areas like park of golf courses. Then at some point those were all gone and replaced with rotor sprinklers. Of course smallest areas always had spray type heads and still do today, although the rotators seem to be quickly replacing the old sprays. Thanks for posting these. It’s winter here now (December2024) and I haven’t seen a sprinkler running since October.
It is interesting how the different styles of sprinklers have developed in different areas. Thanks for watching.
Curious if the Rain-O-Mat was the same as the Rain-O-Matic?

Is there any marking on it to know it is half circle? Or do you just have to try it out and see?
Usually can tell by looking at the nozzle. Thanks for watching.

Nice rare find! It still runs well even after years of abuse.
Thank you for the comments and for watching.
I can only marvel at the diversity of American irrigation companies. Whenever a manufacturer has made an effort to divert a vertical stream of water through channels into a horizontal circular movement, this will be conducive to even water distribution over the entire range.
Water has always been an interesting element that we all deal with on a daily basis. We control it, channel it, divert it into ways that best suits all our needs. Often amazing resources are invented to accomplish this. Thank you your comments and for watching!
Love these rare guys you come up with! This one goes on the long list of companies who had sprinklers private labeled for them. I’d guess some foundry in LA made them. I’ve met a couple people who worked for western brass, but so far no one has heard of a surviving list of companies they contracted to, the years of those contracts, or better yet, the products involved. How great would that be to have? Anyway, thanks for continuing to keep your eye out for these gems!
Thanks for your comments. One of these days probably when we least expect it, someone will show up with a list of these companies. That would be so awesome to see! It probably was a local brass foundry that made them for Sawyer Nursery. There were so many manufacturers in Southern California at that time so it would likely make sense. In the meantime, we can just keep plugging along looking for more gems like these. Thanks for watching!
I didn't know they had flow control valves. I do know I've seen impacts and pivot sprinklers that use regulators to make sure that each sprinkler applies evenly. I guess you want to make sure your bubblers or etc aren't giving out too much water, so you dont kill your plants. On pivots, there are pressure regulators on each sprinkler also to compensate for elevation changes, that can also put a damper on the application of the water droplets. In irrigation you want to make sure every sprinkler is applying the same otherwise you get brown spots or kill whatever it is your watering. I've been learning little tidbits of info in every type of irrigation. Home/Commerical and Ag. It seems every time i go to the dealer i run across some kind of gun or impact or accessory that is used in ag irrigation, usually things i have never seen before. I like going there and just looking at all the impacts in the buckets and the gun trailer, Also i walk around the "junkyard" to look at all the broken/decomissioned equipment there. They have 2 hose reels with Komet 202 Ultra big guns on traveler carts. They even had a paddle wheel traveler t hat moved by a stream of water turning a wheel with cups. You could even set the speed of the cart, whether fast or slow. Definitley cool.
Thank you for the great comments! They have had flow control regulators for some time. There were the pros and cons to this type of system as like anything else. The adjustable type bubblers you could adjust the flow rate for amount that would need for the specific amount of watering for that particular area. Where I use to be employed at we would typically have one control valve that would water several tree wells/planters in a group. So often in this type of watering where one tree well would get too much water and another would not get enough. So it made it easier to adjust the water volume as per each bubbler head. If the tree wells were very consistent, than these type flow controls valves were an excellent choice!! The current modern day sprinklers are seeing more pressure regulating devices built in the spray heads to give a more uniform coverage and prevent misting to save water. It must be fun to visit your local dealer to see what shows up next in their inventory. Thanks for watching!
Very cool installation idea. You guys must have seen/repaired everything.
It seems like we were always seeing something different and unusual. It did make it interesting at times. Thanks for the comments and for watching…
I wonder if you could do a ‘rubbing’ with pencil and paper to see what the lettering is?
That’s an excellent idea!! I will try that and see. Thanks for the suggestion and thanks for watching..
A curious mind must inquire - did you try to do a rubbing on your old sprinkler? I was thinking about it and you could also use a ‘pastel’ to assist in the rubbing. I hope you were able to procure some additional detail.
Thank you for the excellent idea!! We will check it out and see!!
The flow control valve looks like a dependable way to reduce the flow, and the simple elbow configuration would not attract tampering like a bubbler head might.
You are correct! There is very little to go wrong. Thanks for watching…
Very old Buckner sprinkler head. Those heads were made in southern California back in the 30's.
Thank you for the help in identifying this sprinkler! Now that we have a manufacturer, we can do more research on it. Again thanks for the help and thanks for watching!
@@oldschoolsprinklers9000 you know that could also be a Royal Coach sprinkler. They were out of Beverly Hills.

I can’t place it, but I’ll keep my eye out. Great back story on how you came to have it. Thanks for sharing it!
Bill, Thanks for keeping an eye out and for watching!
I can't say much about the manufacturer of your heirloom. But I do know how this sprinkler model works. Please google the keyword Siedlerfreund. You will find my references to a sprinkler that was developed in Berlin around 1925. Whether the Berlin model was inspired by models from the USA or vice versa is uncertain. The only important thing is that the vertical water jet is diverted into a horizontal rotation by a nozzle disk. The amazing effect: the water distribution remains roughly constant over the entire range. Try it out for yourself. I want to show another Tuesday spray nozzle soon and explain this effect again.
Thank you so much for the great information! I will check it out and see what happens! Thanks for watching and the comments
Nice old full circle spray! You are right that is very old. I am not sure who made it. Have you tried cleaning the metal on it? You may be able to read the writing better if it was cleaned. It runs well off your water source. Maybe Bill might know some history on it or at least a model or brand!
Yes, I have tried to clean the lettering without much luck. Unfortunately, the lettering is too far gone. Thanks for the comments they are all great!! Thanks for watching.
Great comparison of the nozzles, Dave. Thanks for sharing these. I found the 176 grouped in with the same 175 in my kitchen and 1940 catalog. What’s interesting is they don’t show a #15 nozzle. Just 3,5,9,11,and 12.
Bill, Thank you for the information from your 1940’s catalog. That’s more than what I have. My catalogs only go back to the late 60’s early 70’s. The number 15 nozzle is quite a bigger nozzle for sure. Again, thanks for the information and for watching!…
Nice Thompson sprays. Good to see the comparison of the spray patterns between the different nozzle sizes.
Thanks for watching.
You have a great Rain-O-Mat collection. When I was first in irrigation, I wondered where all these brands sold enough to stay in business. It’s becoming obvious the answer was Southern California. This style of bubbler is really beautiful, and you capture them in action really well. It’s great that you had four different patterns to show, too. There were obviously people to designed planter beds with these. Great to see.
Thank you for the comments. Back in the days of the building boom, these type of bubblers where used quit a bit in small planters and tree wells. Thanks for watching.!
Great demo on the various watering patterns. Ideal for small areas for sure.
Thank you.
Rain Jet is really my all time favorite. The spray pattern is flawless even coverage and wind hardly bothers them.
They do a good job on the spray pattern for sure. Thanks for the comments and for watching…

Wow. I have never heard of this sprinkler. I recall an old brass spray having Adjustable in the name, but Herman’s is brand new to me. One more for the list! I love it when someone finds something knew like this. Thanks for sharing it!

I was surprised to find them in a catalog! I’m still digging in the buckets, who knows what will show up next!! Thank you for the comments and for watching…
These are real finds! I got my hands on a sprinkler wrench from the same company and started doing research. I could find only a single ad from the early 1960’s that listed them for sale. No pictures in the ad. I’m so glad you found these! Someday we should catalog all the brands. Great video of a super rare brand of sprinklers!
Thanks you for the comments. Thats an excellent idea to catalog them all. I do have several more of them that I have not shown yet. Thanks for trying to find out some of the history about this one. Thanks for watching…
I would totally endorse the idea of a catalog being in place. There really is nothing out there in terms of a document/history/catalog on the sprinkler/irrigation companies from past to present. At least I have not found one yet. Lots of trade publications, but nothing in terms of a catalog of companies.
@@uswcboyI often wonder how many other brands that are out there as well. We keep stumbling on to them every now and then. The list to compile would be an effort but worth it. Thanks for the comments…

Yep. John D. Ross’ company. Same company for the Ross Crown, the Ross Star, and that hose nozzle. Luther Burbank said Ross’ star or square sprinkler, don’t remember which now, was the best sprinkler to use for roses. Pasadena was a hotbed for irrigation, especially before the war. Love that you showed the handheld waterer, too!
