Beethoven - Symphony no. 7, I (1/2) - Haitink & Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra
RIP Bernard Haitink 1929-2021 It's not that I'm shocked - he lived 92 years in this life. I'm very saddened to hear of his passing though. Haitink was one of the greatest conductors of our age and a true ambassador of his art. Humble and faithful to the music in every situation, his sober and revealing visions of such a wide range of repertoire has left us with a rich recorded legacy of some of the greatest reference recordings, made with the greatest orcheatras in the world. And that's without even touching on his eminently distinguished career with the great Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam. Since the very beginning of my journey with orchestral music, my record collection has gotten steadily more littered with Haitink readings. Despite his notable absence of flamboyance or histrionics - dare I say ego, even - with Haitink, you can safely go for absolutely ANY of his recordings, without ANY hesitation or need for prior research or reviews, and rest assured in the knowledge that you'll ALWAYS be presented with an outstanding, emotionally intelligent and profound rendition of whatever that piece may be. There's not many conductors in that bracket. I was just lucky enough to catch Haitink live a couple of times, including a stunning Bruckner 6th symphony with the Dresden Staatskapelle. I'm very sad to hear he has left us.
A little bit too fast is my humble opinion. But I love Haitink!
Tempo, too fast for me.
I see that Westworld used this recently to push their transhumanism predictive programming on us. It's a good show but you have to be able to see what they are doing. Watching things with eyes open is paramount.
Jonny Parker lol
I'm deaf
I see dead people
I love to hear a climax at the 3rd (the varied) statement of the main theme, around 4:50! So few conductors do it, and I know it is not written, but how the music asks for it! It's spine tingling!!
Ottimo Haitink e grande l'orchestra. Le diatribe sul tempo sono ridicole e le lascio a chi di musica non capisce niente
my favorite
My greatest experience, while living in the Netherlands 2010-2013, was a concert in the Concergebouw, with Haitink and the Concergebouw Orchestra, playing a Bruckner symphony (no 7).

The King's speech.
Poème sur la 7eme
i came here becuase of warthunder
Haitink over determines the brass here to such an extent that he undermines perhaps the greatest of Beethoven's symphonies. Novelty yes/ elegance and passion - No!
La velocidad del III movimiento, exageradamente rápido. La música marca "presto" y eso es prestisimo.
War Thunder
Too fast.
I'm going to name my first born son Beethoven
Devine, spiritual mirical Music which is straight from heaven with so much meaning Love and endless admiration from Israel
Beiber doesn't even write his own music and still gets more recognition than a man who wrote music deaf.
Κωνσταντινος Λ. Ραλλης No, believe me, Bieber does.
I think he was lost in translation...
True
+Olsonarts he does get more recognition because he sings .. uses his voice (obviously) so people recognize him but problem with those "old" classical composers is that you dont hear their voice and for people like me (i love classical music) is hard to distinguish beethoven from mozart .. people with musical hearing can and will hear the difference but i just dont :( (i dont like bieber but i do not hate him because he does what he does .. its his problem not mine)
the problem is i just dont hear the difference and trust me i invested a lot of time listening to this kind of music
I listen to this and I'm just so jealous of Beethoven. I wish I could create something this beautiful and timeless.
they're not very good
+TheBodhisattva27 Why do you say that? I think this is a splendid performance!
I don't think you'd be likely to know whether they were or not.
The guy with the bassoon @3:00 is classic. One of my favorites.
Well I came here for the most beautiful orchestral music, and in the first 10 seconds I realized this is one of the themes for War Thunder. Amazing.
What !!!!! I love you beethoven
My favourite of them all.
Gewoon magnifique, hartelijk dank! Naar mijn mening het beste orkest van de wereld o.l.v. de beste dirigent van de wereld :-) En ook nog mijn favoriete Beethoven-symfonie (deze en de Eroica dan). Wat wil een mens nog meer :-)
It seems to be, that you all knew Beethoven himself.....
I think this is Bruckner's greatest finale. Unlike 6 and 7, he put the main gravity of the whole symphony in the finale. The opening brass shout has undoubtedly influenced several generations of film score composers.
They may play it with a tempo that is inappropriate, but there are other recordings that demonstrate the appropriate tempo. Again, I look to the Leonard Bernstein recordings...
It is. But it's allegretto even though it's a slow part of the 7th. Karajan and Toscanini play it fast too.
The tempo is too fast. You should hear Leonard Bernstein conduction the New York Symphony to hear how it should be played.
I correct, this and Zcell's version rocks
Well; after some part ofthe day coaring II movements of the 7th Symphony. The winner is ernard Haitink, followed maybe by Antal Dorati or Kleiber
So this is what we were told at musical education. Maybe it depends on the audience or the context
War Thunder!
Really? Sounds strange for me... Everyone was applauding at Concerto For Group And Orchestra after each movement.
the fall
There HAS to be no applause between the movements. People who applaude between two movements will be considered illiterate. Applause - although highly appropiate given the fact that this is a masterpiece - would be a bad habit.
Wow.....
Yes, been to the Concertgebouw and heard Haitink, Chailly and Jansons conduct. My favorite concert hall in the world and the RCO has been one of the world's best for decades.
I thought Bruckner died in Vienna in 1896, where he's buried beneath an organ at St. Florian monastery church. I didn't realize he became eternal.
Agree bruckner's music is the definition of Epic. Whenn I heard this for the first time I had to hit the piano and try and reproduce those chords.
There is a recording of Haitink conducting this, with the RCO on Philips label. I think that one has already been made in the 80s,anyway a long time ago. Of this concert.... I don't think so! Nowadays the RCO pays their own recordings so they haven't got a lot. They have some Beethoven (2 and 9) with Jansons that are also worth-while!
Yep I was there (and shed a tear during this part which rarely ever happens to me), Haitink is so wonderfully delicate in his conducting... Btw I remember sitting at the side of the concerthall, and right in front of me there was a guy who brought his newspaper with him and fell asleep during the 2nd part. He missed what could have been one of the most wonderful moments in his life. I payed attention for two and will carry this experience with me for ever. Thank you mr Haitink and KCO...
make that 12
