Hello there! I'm a real life librarian who loves retro and role playing games!
I make videos about stuff I like and old games from when I was a kid.

Preserving Pokemon Cards and Video Game Manuals, From a Librarian's Perspective
Items made out of paper, like Pokemon cards or game manuals, can get really gross over time when not protected, and you may have lots of these from a long time ago just sitting around in the open. There are many ways to go about preserving them, and it turns out libraries are experts when it comes to making sure paper stays safe for as long as possible.
Did you know, if you collect and store Pokemon cards, you're already doing the work of a librarian? Collectors have heard it before - you need PVC and acid free storage options if you want to preserve your cards seriously. But what do those terms mean? If you're interested in collecting, or just want to learn about some ways to protect your valuable cards and manuals, then this video is for you.
I am not endorsed by the companies mentioned in the video. I just know from experience they make quality stuff, and can easily recommend them.

I (Literally) Outgrew My Nintendo DS, And That's OK
มุมมอง 6K21 วันที่ผ่านมา
Christmas 1998 introduced me to Pokémon Red/Blue and the Game Boy Color. 26 years later, during my game preservation project, I found some unexpected joy in the Nintendo DS and discovered why it's so important to keep our consoles for as long as possible. The Nintendo family of handhelds, from the Game Boy all the way to the Switch (and soon to be Switch 2) have had one thing in common - how ea...
Cable Storage, From a Librarian's Perspective
มุมมอง 7Kหลายเดือนก่อน
Have you ever wondered about storage for your console cables when they aren't being used? Being a retro gamer and collector means you probably have lots of cables from 30 plus years of video game consoles pushed out of sight, and you don't really know what to do with them. Power bricks from the Xbox or Nintendo family of consoles that have been sitting around, wrapped in their own wires without...
Taking Care of CD Cases, From a Librarian's Perspective
มุมมอง 6Kหลายเดือนก่อน
CD cases, or jewel cases, are fragile. In the library, these get damaged and have to be replaced all the time. The same can happen to game collectors. Here are some tips and suggestions for storing these as safely and as possible without breaking the bank. The adoption of the CD required an adequate way to protect it. Something that could be cheap and easily mass produced. Thus, the CD case was...
Storing Games, From a Librarian's Perspective
มุมมอง 40Kหลายเดือนก่อน
I've worked as a librarian for over six years and learned a lot about how to take care of all sorts of "stuff." Storing video games is not so different to what libraries do with books, movies and more! I applied some of the knowledge from being a librarian to put together storage options for my video game collection, so that it remains safe, neat and easily accessible in the future. Hopefully t...

The real question is, when was the last time you bought a physical video game lol
I've seen a lot of games that I still own watching this video lol and all of my collections have the same things. Pamphlets, booklets, and receipts lol. I recently had all of my games in a storage container with three drawers and I organized them via series and it was a mismatch of various different games from different consoles and some of which that had the collection box as well. I decided to put all of those on a shelf and put all of the collection boxes together. However I put them in alphabetical order. So one shelf has all of my games and the other shelf has all of the games that are in collective boxes or tens or some sort of case and both shelves have them all in alphabetical order. But also I put them in console order as well and any collective figurines or statues I have I put those up in their respective console sections.
this channel has taught me so much about storing my games! very calming content aswell, keep it up!
I got a manual/lore book in two different games last year, but it was literally because they were put in there as a special bonus for buying the physical edition, they're *bonus items* now, it's mind boggling.
my og fat ds touchscreen gave out so quick, i was always jealous of my cousins ds lite cuz his actually worked properly. also the ds lite stylus was so much better. i miss my ds and dont know what happened to it. now i just have a ds emulator on my stylus phone but its not the same
This is helpful for my battletech cards
If it doesn’t comply with ISO 9706, 16245 and/or 18902 I don’t want it. Also If GTA 6 doesn’t come with a physical map I swear to god
Game Manuals are very important Especially when playing games from the 1st, 2nd, 3rd console generations
woah, the ps2 release of persona 4 came with 2 discs?
a sound disc! remember when games would just "come" with stuff?
@@coughyybeans woah, really?? i didn't know that! games just "coming" with stuff is a bit beyond my time, sadly lol (i think the only example i can think of is my copy of liberty city stories coming with a map that i have on my poster wall). is it mostly just P4 songs? if so that's an incredible bonus considering 4 is a serious contender for best videogame soundtrack of all time
The .hack//sign sseries came with anime episodes that corresponded w.the characters in the game. It was..a game about ppl playing an mmo [pre sword art online lol] so the anime discs were bts of the characters playing the mmo. Sigh....i miss that sorta thing...@ephemera-noctourniquet
your stuff is really calming!! tuned into the katamari stream from yesterday (had it on in the bg) and was pleasantly surprised how chill everything was, usual twitch streams i see are super fast xD
My cat peed on my Ocarina of time Manual. I still own it, don't tell anyone
lmao. I aint a snitch
love this series of videos, thank you for making some nice relaxing stuff for me to unwind with!
This series is of video is 🔥
Chillin’ with that BGM.
Word brought me right to my FFX memories
I'm in the middle of documenting what I own in excel.. Before I make proper inventory system and boy.. There's so much haha. Currently it's either on shelves or in carton boxes with layers of bubble wrap separating it from carton so it won't damage itself. For more expensive/important ones I suggest buying protectors but it can get.. Expensive so decide what's worth it and what is not.
3:43 I still do that
My GBA was acting up exactly like that, and it was a pretty easy fix. Opened it up just to have a better look inside, literally put a little bit of isopropyl inside the power switch, and turned the switch on and off a lot of times just for whatever was inside causing issues went away, or at least out of the contacts. It worked perfectly both of my GBA and my GBC, and now they turn on first try. Hoping you can fix yours eventually, it took me years to build up the courage to open up something that I was emotionally attached to.
As an avid collector, this video is a really good introduction towards storage! I prefer to keep my games on a shelf, but my current living situation only has room for one big shelf and I've run out of space and I've started doing the dreaded Two Deep Method (hiding half of my games in the process T~T) Ideally, I can get a buncha Ikea media shelves and line a whole room with shelves!
I never liked the twist of the 4d beings, it just makes the universe of star ocean have less solidity, makes it feel shallow, more video gamey and it pushes aside the first set of antagonists who I thought who we were supposed to be fighting as they were the instigators in the opening of the game, it makes the game havean unfocused feeling even though they were doing good before the introduction of 4d beings.
I have most of my original handhelds still, only exception being my very first gameboy advance, which was stolen. And all except for my original DS lite work still, unfortunately the top screen of that DS lite started dying just before the 3DS came out.
the receipts don't have any ink, it's thermal print. I don't know what this means for any potential transfer to the games though. also, ill keep that earthbound nice and safe if you like :)
I absolutely relate to the sentimentality of hanging onto these handhelds. They're why they're my favorite way to game. Just like the DS Lite you showed, my red original 3DS is absolutely scratched and worn, as I brought around everywhere, during my middle school years. I adore that little thing and think it has so much more personality than the Switch ever will in its life time. I even bought a used 2DS, to continue the journey of 3DS games, even though I don't use it as much as I should.
I was a person who used CD cases back in the day but still kept the game boxes.
Correction: CD binders
Thanks for his video! Really useful!
Feel fortunate you're not trying to store NA Sega CD or Saturn games. Those giant jewel cases crack if you even look at them funny.
you're not a child and oyu're not a young girl. it's time to grow up, man. I know you people don't want to hear it. just bin all the games and consoles. it's meant to be a hobby or past time or minor vice, it's not meant to consume your personality and life like this. it's just some shit we give to kids to keep them busy and leave us alone for awhile it's not that deep.
@@jordan3636 why are you here then, touch grass
If you feel that way then go watch a different video.. Clearly this isn't for you. You can choose to not watch this.
ultimately I'd like to engage with you in good faith and ask, why do you feel this way? what makes video games a lesser form of art than music? if a game like can illicit feelings of loss and coming to terms with the abruptness of death in a way final fantasy 7 can? if Cyberpunk2077 can engage with the feeling of being used by a corporate machine, a cog in a system that you cannot change where your only options of achieving true happiness are to leave the city, either by death or to live in the desert, or to give in and accept the miserable lot you have in life and you reckon with that. If games can make so many people feel things the same way music can send chills down your spine, why dismiss it as 'shit we give to kids to keep them busy?'
god forbid people have hobbies that aren't just "Watch The Game With The Boys" and "Drink Beer" for fuck's sake
I always hear mostly from current gen gamers about how hard it is to keep games organized physically and it's really not I have shelves with all my titles lined up in alphabetical order honestly the fact it's so easy just makes me feel like most of today's gamers are just lazy but then again we are talking about people who have there disc out of the cases and just thrown all over the floor and stuff these people are not organized at all and they don't care to even try 🤦
This video's really informative so thank you a ton for making it! Also your voice while narrating is really relaxing!
Dust isnt the True Enemy its Humidity. Disk Rot and Oxidizing pads that destroys games. Dust is NOTHING. Also ignore disk scuffs. its better to LEAVEM THEM the Eff Alone. A scuff will become a scratch with one bad wipe Dab scuffs with a cloth if you have to NO WIPING. Also Dont put things under a bed like that the bed will warp at any weight and that height clearance is FAR to close and will shatter all of the cases in that position Stacking them flat and not going over the lip of that box if you NEED to place them under the bed. For cardstock Boxes they sell acrylic and plastic holder that seal up for them. USE THEM they come in standard sizes... and Finally for small carts like GBA GBC DS GG Use Cassette holders(if you cant get DS cases for GBA/DS) Finally a DVD Shelf is your best friend no matter what. Console cases have 5 sizes DVD box, CD Jewel, CD VHS size, Blueray, WTF GC and Switch uses. There are many space saving shelves that double as fold up desks and such maximize space of your room first (get galvenized steel beams and screws from your aunt) Consoles... now that is a tough one if you want a plug and play set up its easy, Store onsoles flat in boxes and all accessories and wires with each. At TV have an Easy Power plug, HDMI input and a Scaler of your choice( OSSC + Frameister is my setup/ But Retrotink 5x and 4k pro exist) perhaps an AV Splitter for a CRT too. Retro Likes VGA/COMPOSITE/SVIDEO/COMPONENT/ and RGBs Via SCART or BNC or VGA. The Scalers typically can take all of them at once You have a simple plug and play setup. Now for a FUll always REt to go setup.... Yeah you need space no matter what. BUUUTT.. Get 2 cheap 4x2 1ft cube shelves at Walmart for 30$ each a piece of plywood(or whatever thin wood you would like) and attach it to the two 4x2 shelves back drill small wire holes into it in each cube back OR drill the holes int the 4x2 shelves for wires to be threaded through from the bottom most cubes. Optional ist to install sliding door or simple hinge doors to the front controlling dust and UV onto the consoles. Now that should work for most common consoles gives you 12 cubes for consoles/Cube holders/shelves for games and 4 for Power strips/ Cube holders... Except the big bulky ones like ALL the Xboxs, OG PS2, OG Ps3, PS4, ps5.... So instead of Cubes you can get a more standard shelf for them or part of your entertainment center for them. Letting the Retro games towers on each side of a cheaper TV setup. Or make an L Shape with the Two towers next to them. For AV I would recommend the Retro towers Terminate AV types into a simple push button switcher trying to keep all the types of together IE All the Component Composite SVideo Consoles in tower A and the PC Types that use VGA or Scart in Tower B, then take those outputs into the scaler of choice and then HDMI into an HDMI Switch/ AV Reciever for the HDMI types then to the TV. This is the most Space Efficient way for this but it still is a lot of space and there is still more space it can take up if you want to expand it but it also self contain the wires and allow you to turn of each sector so only what you want to turn on will turn on each power strip can be turned off as needed. And no Power strips turned off don't draw power. On a final note... avoid Ikea over priced furniture made in chana you might as well buy the cheap china knockoffs since they made it anyway for ikea.
I was a 2000’s kid but she was indeed one of my crushes, alongside Fay from Star Fox 2
There is no Ink on the receipts, it is mostly thermal Paper.
Everything I had from a kid was either lost or stolen. Shamefully I can only look at my Steam library
You sound trans
The proper way to wipe discs can't be overstated. Ideally, you want to never have to wipe them at all.
I have a cabinet for my PS2 games and a big bookshelf for all my era of Xbox games,if I run out of space in going to eventually drill more storage onto the walls😊
I used to collect the receipts from the game purchases too. Mostly because I got warranties for them. But I kept them in the cases too. Thank you for the helpful guide.
Clean up my room last month and all the cables are sorted and stored in Zip Lock Bags. I will eventually move them into containers/boxes, just looking for ones that fit the room and are affordable. I like the velcro strap arrangement, will apply that to my own storing methods. Thanks for the video.
unfathomable, i have mostly digital games physical games are a liability
Actually you own practically nothing if your collection is mostly digital [and by that I mean a DD on console] . When you purchase a digital game, you just buy the "license to play it" because the developer still owns the game code. So for w e reason game gets pulled off of console ,you saying "well hey I bought this it's mine!" Means nothing lol if the platform shuts down or changes its policies, you might lose access to your games
have fun losing access to your games on a whim because big corpos decided you shouldn't be able to play them anymore lol
I grew up with the Game Boy (1987) but i can not play with it anymore. The Display is just not worth "DMG" (sry, word joke^^) your eyes over time. For me, even if the Switch is also a Handheld, im a HUGE fan of the 3DS. It plays NDS Games, can be modded today and you can play everything below him. I understand the time it needs to start, but i own a bigger Battery, so it sits always in Standby Mode and i only turn it off, if i need something to install to the SD Card. (i own many physical 3DS Games, but it's nice to have the option to not always change the cartridge of a Game) And if i would stick on NDS, i would miss ALOT of great 3DS Games^^
receipt paper is thermal, so its not actually ink, scratch you fingernail across it and it will leave a line from the friction
this was very relaxing to draw to :^) and i learned a few things!! will be bookmarking that amazon link, you are a godsend haha
This is borderline hoarding at this point. You're storing things away for 10 years to do what with? You are not going to play 95% of those games.
what's wrong with hoarding? since when did owning things become bad? plus, who are you to say "you're not gonna play 95% of those games"? they've been collecting for an incredible amount of time at this point, it's possible they've played a large majority of their library. and even if they haven't, what's it to you?
@@ephemera-noctourniquet "What's wrong with hoarding." Several things. Owning too many things has almost always been exclusively viewed as bad. Many people use hoarding as a way to try to maintain control in their lives, when they are either living isolated, depressed, or missing value in other aspects of their lives. So they own possessions, things, to add value, when in reality, those possessions end up owning you. Game collectors aren't librarians. They're not storing these games for the public to come visit, use, or study. They are purchasing games with money they could spend on countless other things; health, vacations, other loved ones in their lives, self-improvement, art, etc. But instead game collectors are spending a portion of their time buying physical objects (in this case, plastic) that will sit on a shelf and do nothing. Forever. The idea that someone would buy more games than they could ever possibly play is one thing; but buying games, playing them, and then returning them to storage doesn't make much sense. Unless you are actively playing these games, on a regular basis, you're just a storage facility. What is the point of having so many games you have to wrap them up and put them in a closet? What does that do for you, or anyone else? If it brings you joy to imagine a giant mass of plastic in your closet, stored away, then I would definitely advise mental health treatment. I'm not trying to be insulting. I genuinely mean that. Notice he keeps talking about bringing his librarian skills to the table here; in reality, he's cosplaying as a librarian, who is just hoarding video games in his closet. That's not what librarians do. Game collectors who turn into hoarders use all kinds of titles to refer to themselves; when in reality, they're starting to turn into organized hoarders. I've seen images of people with 10, 20, 30 NES stacked up in a closet, next to 10 Xboxes, 10 Sega Genesis, etc. With literal WALLS covered by only plastic video game cases. I can't imagine coming home and seeing just plastic all over my walls every single day of my life. Never changing. Just the same plastic boxes for 5, 10, 15 years. Sitting on a shelf around me.
@LordRayken you sound like the one who needs mental health treatment, or maybe just an attitude check. "oh no, this hobby that this person (who i know nothing about) is obviously passionate about must be unhealthy! how dare these people spend money on things i personally don't consider valuable? (you saying "art" as if videogames WEREN'T art is funny as hell, too.) they won't even play these games anyway!" (despite the fact that, if you're a videogame collector, chances are you spend a LOT of time playing Video Games, surprisingly enough). it's not just a "massive heap of plastic", and if you think it is, then you're missing the goddamn point and instead of trying to police other people's hobbies you should go mind your fucking business, for crying out loud. also, "cosplaying" as a librarian. because YOU, the allmighty seer, obviously know this person's occupation and is completely sure that they AREN'T a librarian despite all signs pointing to them being one. you don't get to arbitrarily decide whether someone's hobby is unhealthy just because you specifically don't get it. "i can't imagine coming home to just the same plastic boxes, for 15 years sitting around me." since you think owning things is "hoarding" then it must be real lively in that barren empty room you come home to every day.
I also tend to always keep the receipt in my game box. Some of them from 20+ years ago are still readable.
I was in college when the ds came out and my folks were still strict on playing games on school nights. I remember my buddy sold me his white ds lite with pokemon pearl and having to sneakily play through the game by hiding it in the couch. I still have my white ds lite, tho it has succumbed to the hindge Crack issues, so I keep it in a nerf skin to force it to stay in place. I also acquired a rose gold and a pink ds lite, which I use as well, I somehow ended up with 3 of these dang things lol
Im bad for putting the max amount of games in a box as possible. I started storing them because they were collecting so much dust on my parents shelf the box was an upgrade . But removing 1 or 2 games wont hurt it space wise. I feel so bad for how even though I card about my DS games quite a lot during the move a few years ago quite a few had scuffs I didnt plan on happening.
thank you sir very informative
