No more dull, muddy skin tones: The BEST WAY to paint vibrant watercolor portraits | Paint with me!
มุมมอง 2963 หลายเดือนก่อน
This is my favorite way to start off a watercolor portrait! Why is it so great?? 1. It gets rid of that intimidating white paper, and gives you a base to work with. 2. It starts you off with bright, vibrant colors... beginners have a tendency to be timid and use colors that are light, dull, or muddy. 3. It forces you to look at color, light and shadow, instead of the small details which should ...

Abstract Watercolor Landscape | Simple painting for beginners!
มุมมอง 37411 หลายเดือนก่อน
This peaceful abstract watercolor landscape is very simple... you can paint in under 10 minutes! (It took me about 5!) The great thing about this type of watercolor is that the paint and the water will do most of the work for you. For this reason no two paintings will be alike. You can follow the same steps and get a totally different paintings, because the pigment and water flow and blossom on...
Watercolor: A short (but fascinating!) history

Watercolor painting has existed since ancient times, when cavemen ground up charcoal, mixed it with water, and painted on the walls of their caves. Luckily, we've made some progress since then! Today's watercolors are luminous, transparent, glowing. From cavemen to explorers to the U.S. Congress, its history is long, varied, and fascinating. Such a great guest. It’s amazing how it all comes together.
Thank you so much for this video!!❤
It's my pleasure! 😊
Thank you 😊
as a digital artist getting into watercolor i think watercolor is still underrated
I wish you would just get on with it.. a little brevity and empathy for your viewer's ears please? i.e., You talk way too much dude!
No one tied you down and forced you to watch this 😂 If someone takes the time to share their skills and knowledge with you, a little appreciation is in order!
Great documentary, but please don’t think the music is helpful, it is a real annoyance having that in the background and it is totally unnecessary.
Sorry that it bothers you. I like it 😊
js gimme the A already ms manni
Always love your work Tom! Love this landscape!
What type of squirrel hair brushes is Tom Shepherd using? Synthetic or real hair brushes?
I love how your brush dances and your lively color mixes in overall vibe, but I don’t understand the scale of the buildings in the front, I think the recommendation to lead those out was really a good one.
AAAnd the cat came back... I was chuckling. The Yellow Paw Print!
Fabulous!
Thanks so much Cathy!
Thank you, this is very beautiful!
Hello dena... I appreciate your work, you are so talented😊..i have a question pls make a video of tree shadow ..i dont know what will be length of tree shadow on ground...very confused to draw shadow pls make a video if possible thanks alot for your lovely work😊😊
Wonderfull !very inspirating - thats watercolor as I love
Thank you so much for this. I am thoroughly tempted to relearn how to do watercolor. The last time I touched a watercolor palette was... at least 45 years ago during my primary school education in Korea. I don't recall receiving any lessons, though. Parents bought supplies, which we took to classroom and started painting, like plunging into water to learn to swim.. or sink. I also had a little after school lesson at a private outfit around the age of 10, but don't recall learning any kind of technique. On the other hand, I did teach myself how to do pencil sketching by mimicking manga characters like Candy Candy (illustrated by Igarashi Yumiko). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Candy_Candy I was pretty good at those, but stopped drawing altogether after adolescence due to a major upheaval in my life... Perhaps I could start over... ☺
it is fabulous and so are YOU
YOU are fabulous, I so appreciate you stopping by and leaving feedback 😘
I love how your portrait has that extra quality that really stands out and makes it even more special than the photograph. I watch a lot of artists that I admire that truly don't have as much skill as this. Enjoyed the format in this video so much. I was curious was this done all in one go or did you take breaks for layers to dry?
Thanks so much for your comment! I'm so glad that you found this tutorial helpful!! I painted this all in one go, though I may have had interruptions to due to kids or other things! The layers dried pretty fast, which does happen if it's a warm day or you're sitting near a breeze, which I was!
@@DenaAckermanArt Working by a warm breeze sounds nice. It turned out really gorgeous. 💜
@@user-iq5lv4zm9c thank you! ♥
So happy you started a channel. (How did I not know earlier?) This was excellent Dena! ❤Bina
Ohhh thanks Bina!!! ♥ I started it a while ago but it's been very neglected, I am trying to be more consistent :)
This is exactly what I've been looking for! Thank you!
I'm so happy to hear that! Thanks for the feedback 😊
Excellent leveling up lesson. BRILLIANT for NO MUSIC. Try to end that trend. Music on lessons is a big mistake.
Do you really like it with no music?? I was simply to lazy to bother this time :) Glad to know some prefer it!
@@DenaAckermanArt absolutely. I don’t know any serious art teacher who would use music in class while teaching. Creative art and learning takes accessing the right brain. There’s no way with music. Besides that, music is as subjective as the art we like. It’s intrusive to be subjected to someone else’s idea of good music.
@@IMAGINENGINE that makes a lot of sense. Thank you so much. Would love to hear other's opinion on this too if anyone else wants to let me know their thoughts!
@@IMAGINENGINE I agree. Students can select their own music, if desired, while following Dena's lesson.
@@DenaAckermanArt so great, Dena, that you’re open to your students feedback. This use of music seems to be a touchy subject. As Elena says, we can choose what we like to listen to as we learn. If the tutorial has music imbedded, our household, studio, family members have to hear it too, and often i have changed tutorials for that reason. Often, as you know, there’s lots going on around us. Too much stimulation and we likely shut it down.
The Panart brushes aren't really available here 🇺🇸 Jerry's Artarama has a set of very small brushes and a set of 3 small brushes, and that's about it. Is there anyone here you know of who will carry the brushes you have shown?
Ah that's too bad. Hope you can find something good!
I think you’re perfect. Don’t change a thing. You teach so well. I adore listening and learning. I’m new so I need help. Do you give classes? How do I start? Do I float around and find short recordings to try painting with? I feel as if I’m drowning without a solid platform of knowledge to base my beginning with. I hope you can take the time to give me a direction. I’m in love with learning, this is so helpful. Do I start with your number one tutorial?
I'm so, so glad you enjoyed this! Tom is a generous, brilliant, fun instructor! Check out his TH-cam channel or his website for more info! tomshepherdart.com/
Excellent demonstration.
So glad you enjoyed it!
As a beginner I wish I had some knowledge of what the colours do when mixed together. Have you done a tutorial on colour mixing with a limited palate ? It sounds a bit intimidating at first.
You are an amazing and generous teacher. Thank you so much, I’ve learned so much from you.
Agree! Tom is amazing! 😍
These look like peaches to me. Love the loose easy style. I’d like to know the colours he is mixing as I’m a beginner.
I'm so happy you enjoyed it! You can check out Tom's website for more tutorials and color instruction! tomshepherdart.com/

Wow I just came across your channel and I have to say it’s amazing. This video is the best color theory video I’ve seen. You teach with such details which is important and necessary for us beginners
That is so kind of you! Thank you! I'm very happy you enjoyed this video! 😊
incredible teaching and incredible teacher! very gradual, slow as should be, precise and reassuring. I have quite a bit of practice in watercolor and have not yet reached this stage when you paint with absolute confidence. Insisting on the importance of tonal value all along, so important! Thank you for showing us the way
Tom is a master because he makes it looks so easy!! He's also taught me a lot... I'm happy you enjoyed the tutorial!
Wonderful teaching
Tom's amazing! Thanks for you comment! :)
Love the focus of value and shape! It works so beautifully. The result is lovely as it creates depth and helps to accentuate the light against the darker areas and shadows.
Yes, the values and colors are amazing aren't they? So glad you enjoyed the tutorial!
Great painting and video. Thank you for posting!
So glad you enjoyed it, thank you!
That’s helped me a lot thank you a million, I wrote every word you said in my sketchbook, this video is the most helpful thing I’ve ever watched I wish you a good life thank you so much ❤ , I’m following you from the great Iraq 🇮🇶 ❤🫡
Thank you for your kind comments! I'm so happy you found the video helpful!! God bless 😊
Tom, where in Wales are you, Cardiff end or down towards Tenby, or even Fishguard?. Would love to attend some of your classes. 🏴 Love the way you use your colours. Fellow Welsh person here 😊

Great instruction!! THANK YOU!!
I'm so glad you enjoyed it! Thank you for watching!!
Now there is absolutely no reason to fking the paint brush like that. He's extremely slow and careful where he's painting what's to be seen. The slap dash on the edges and background is just ridiculous.
Everyone has their own style of painting. That's the beauty of art :)
This is very informational for introductory students of color. However, the word is “complementary,” something that completes, not complimentary, which means something nice about a situation.
Ahh you're right! Thanks for the correction!
Great tutorial! I was looking for PANART brushes on Amazon. could not find that brand
I don't see them on Amazon either, but if you google it you will find other places that sell them! Good luck!
Thanks for sharing your process. I followed along and had a wonderful experience and a satisfactory outcome-what more can you ask? What I appreciate most is the ability to draw out form and light so effectively while preserving the spontaneity of the medium. Will be reviewing your website for in-depth lessons. Cheers!
Wow I'm so happy to hear this! Tom is incredible and I hope you can gain a lot more from his teaching!
