Deadheading Lavender in the Late Summer Garden
มุมมอง 54K5 ปีที่แล้ว
Lavender is one of the very best xeric (waterwise) shrubs. And August is a good month for deadheading lavender plants. Proper pruning and deadheading of lavender plants will increase your harvest of flower spikes for dried flowers and make your plants more beautiful and healthy.

Muhlenbergia capillaris 'Pink Flamingos' (Muhly Grass) shown here with Monarch butterflies, is a vigorous grass ornamental grass with very narrow blue-green foliage and soft pink flower spikes in early fall. A heat-loving plant, it is an excellent choice for most Santa Fe and Albuquerque landscapes. Its narrow, upright growing habit makes it a great choice against walls and in tight spaces. 4-5...

    Hi! What month do you do this? My tenussima stipa is looking quite dead (we are in London UK), should I try cutting it back more hard to see if it comes back or is it just not waking up yet?

    Thank you for posting this. I love feather grass and planted a few in my front yard. Started to notice its gotten too heavy and falling down. Wasn't sure how to prune it and get rid of the dead ends. This was a very helpful video.

    What do you recommend with phenomenal lavender? I planted this year in April and they bloomed. Now the stems are starting to turn yellow on some of the plants. Is this a problem or normal?

    • @waterwisegardeningllc79
      @waterwisegardeningllc79 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lavender Phenomenal and all other lavenders should be deadheaded after blooming in spring or summer. Cut the old flowering stem back just as it sticks out of the foliage. If some of the plants are turning yellow, it suggests to me that they may be overwatered. They will only need watering twice weekly at this point with a gallon of water each time. If watering is more frequent, cut back to the schedule suggested above. If you used a compost or wood chip or bark mulch, pull it back any mulch around the yellow plants to reveal the bare soil.

    I got a lavender plant and planted 1 of them in the ground but it started turning brown. Some of it is still alive though. Will it come back if i deadhead it?

    Hi, How would you trim the blue fescue grass? In a similar way?

  • @aaronpage1822

    Isn’t it easier and better for the grass to just be cut back?

    • @waterwisegardeningllc79
      @waterwisegardeningllc79 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, it would be easier but with this particular grass, Silky thread grass, it's necessary to comb out the old spikes. I f you just cut Mexican feather grass, the new growth comes out of a flat surface and it looks really strange. If you have this particular grass, it's worth the extra effort.
