In 1989 I was a Brakeman at VIA Rail Canada. I was returning to CN at the change of card and decided to take a Busman's Holiday before my pass was revoked on returning to CN. This video was made from the cab of No 1 from Montreal Central Station to Ottawa. There was track work going on around Coteau and the train was routed via the freight track, a very unusual move for a passenger train.

    the fourth burst of horn at crossings is stupid, the short third burst should be long and cover the crossing. if someone doesn't hear the third horn does it matter. they are gone

    • @johnwallington6127
      @johnwallington6127 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The 4th blast is not stupid. It is Rule 14L (2 long 1 short and 1 long) which reads as follows, "At least 1/4 mile of a mile from every public crossing at grade to be prolonged or repeated according to the speed of the train until the crossing is occupied by the engine or cars. This is the UCOR wording which was in effect when the video was made. If you don't follow the rules you will be held out of service.

    Enjoyed the video very much!! It brings back wonderful memories. In 1985 I rode across Canada from Montreal to Vancouver and back aboard VIA Rails Canadian. That trip was wonderful!! The wilds of Ontario, going along the north shore of Lake Superior , the prariries of central canada , the Canadian rockies, kicking horse pass , the spiral tunnels, rogers pass , the Frasier and Thompson river canyons , it was beautiful !!! Loved every bit of it !!! Greetings from connecticut.

    @johnwallington6127 what year was this taken? Noticed an SD40-2 with 5 inch stripes at 14:17 ... did not expect that as I didn't think they lasted as late as this (must be between '87 and '90 as the F40s showed up in 86-87 then and then the last VIA through here was Jan '90) Also, they were really bombing through Bonfield siding hahaha If you have more of this I would love to see it. I worked out of North Bay briefly and my grandfather was conductor from '39 to '83 out of North Bay too.

My VIA pass was about to be cancelled when I returned to CN at the fall change of card so I thought I'd get some miles on it.

    VIA Rail F40PH-2's was good during the days. I prefer FP9's, FPA-2's, FP7's. I would go to VIA Rail #1 after lunch. 12:25pm. Right at Woodroffe Avenue bridge. Standing. Waiting. Then headlight coming. First Merivale Road bridge. Then a minute later, Woodroffe Ave bridge. Taking a leisure 60 mph to the next signal......"Bells Corners". Then "Bells Junction" & diverged to the CP Carleton Place Sub. Mile 8.1. All the way to Carleton Place station. (Now Coleman Street) Thank you for the opportunity to relive the memory on VIA Rail.

    I moved to the Ottawa area after the Montreal-North Bay section of the Canadian was discontinued. Now with the line itself gone, this will be the only way I can experience it. I was fortunate enough as a teenager in the early 1980’s to take The Canadian from Toronto to Vancouver when it was still on the CPR alignment. I had a chance to take a cab ride from Calgary to Golden, but had to turn it down because I was travelling with an elderly relative and they would worry that I missed the train! Memories of riding in the vestibule with the top half of the dutch door open, smelling the fresh air of the Rockies, hearing the burble of the headwaters of the Thompson, spiral tunnels from the diner, prairie thunderstorm while whipping past grain elevators on the prairies with an 16 car summer consist (hard to believe it was that long!). Trip of a lifetime.

      Hey John, I live in Blackwater, I can confirm the tracks are gone, east from Uxbridge to Lindsay. NO rails left in Lindsay at all as far as I know. But this is really cool footage coming thru Blackwater, it's a shame you shut the camera off just before getting to the side by side bridges just north east out of Blackwater.. Those bridges are one one of my favourite spots. I moved here in 95 and grew up on the trail, the tracks were pulled up by then, but the water tower base and the platform, and a few little sheds were still there for a few years untill the conservation cleaned it all up. The medium sized shed in Blackwater, to the left, is now situated behind The Brick a Brac, Antique store @ hwy 12 & Blackwater Rd, only a couple hundred meters from where it is in the video. I guess this had to be one of the last handful of trips up this line eh?!! Thanks for sharing!!

    What BOTH railways and the governments did to Canada's railroad infrastructure is absolutely criminal. We've REGRESSED as a nation by allowing the auto industries, hedge funds, and Wall St. to dictate our nation's infrastructure and transportation policies. Aside from the Vietnam war, boomers had it made... and they destroyed it all in the pursuit of endless profits at the expense of our nation's infrastructure. There aren't enough words in the English lexicon to adequately describe how disgusted I am with the people who allowed this to happen.

      I don’t have videos, but my dad worked for CN for over 30 years, and at one point had a project in Algonquin Park. They set him and my mom and my just born older brother up in a private area of the bunk car (probably a retired diner) so that they could all be together for the month or more that the work would take. This was in the late 1950’s so there were few roads to get in and out. The cook supplied all the food and she said he made the best wild blueberry pie she has ever had. Apparently there were plenty of wild blueberry shrubs along the ROW - those and strawberries grew very well in the cinders left behind by generations of steam engines.

    I 1st took "The Canadian" from Ottawa-Vancouver in June 1964 from the Old Union Station. A month before in May I took a ride in a brand new coach-lounge straight from Canadian Car Co. There were some extra screws on the window sill beside my seat. It was being taken down to Montreal to be put on "The Super Continental" that afternoon. My very 1st train trip by myself was in a Parlor Car behind steam in 1955 Maxville-Ottawa. Since then I have traveled over 250,000km mostly here in Canada 2 yrs in a row I went Vancouver-Halifax & return & in 2000 even went all the way to Sydney,NS. I also spent a month in May 1987 riding trains all over Australia & in June 1990 I got a 2 wk Brit Rail Pass & rode all over UK 1st class. Yes I'm a "train-a-holic" I lived in Almonte,ON 1957-62. Sadly the rails "The Canadian" used to travel on through there have been ripped up & made into a walking path. Cheers from Vancouver.
