This video is very accurate. I have owned my sandcast 750 since 1971. I am the second owner, but I knew the bike since new. The first owner broke one of the weak drive chains at about 1300 miles. It wrapped itself around the countersproket and broke the cases. (Common occurrence) Honda gave him a new diecast case and paid for the rebuild. We thought it was cool to have the new smooth cases instead of the tacky looking sandcast ones. Boy, were we stupid.

Sandcast engines had a race cam. A bit hairy for street use. They backed off on that for later models.

I have a1962 cb72 ,a blue one not as nice as your cb77 though😁 . If you dont mind me asking , 😂where did you get your stainless mufflers/silencers from, they look great !

Who I can I send my side cases to in order to be polished to look like chrome or have chromed? Same for my rear hub once I take the wheel apart?

It costs about $850 in 76 too, and any kid could buy one if they went out to make a little money. Parents need not be involved. No wonder why the sport was so big (over ten time the bike sales of today), in 70's USA.

Not a bike guy, more a vintage snowmobile type but appreciate anything nostalgic. Somebody needs to just buy this, do a few little things but keep the original look. Too many over restored things in all these hobbies.

I had a K1 and just missed the K model .This was a great report . I new of some of the differences but not all that you showed .Its too bad you had to do this excellent report in such a noisy environment .

Im working on an 1981 heritage special xs650, this is the heaviest xs650 ive seen yet, not sure why its this heavy, but its all original and in show room condition and its been outside for 10 years, no pitting or damage anywhere, a very nice bike, its 91/2 out of 10

I have both, a '68 CB77 Superhawk in black, and a '64 CA77 Dream in red, now undergoing restoration. Great bikes, easy to own and maintain! I get a lot of comments with the Superhawk, it's a chick magnet too!However, parts availability can be tough, and reproduction parts quality can vary widely.

I bought a 305 Superhawk in 1967, like it alot. Lost it in a fire.

You missed one difference: The Dream had a 360 degree crank and the Superhawk had a 180 degree crank. I also had a 1960 domestic Dream (one that was not for the USA). It had a dry sump engine and high exhaust - yes, it was a 305 Dream.

Back in 1974 I bought my brothers CB77. He wasn't riding it much and had just replaced the exhaust. The $60 I paid was a lot for a 17 year old still in school. I anticipated a condition worse than it was and pulled the head. In shop class I put the exhaust valve to the belt sander to removed the carbon and was too aggressive. Much to my shock that valve was $10 (5X minimum wage back them). Once I got it running I would often be found running 2nd gear up to 55 MPH at 9K RPM. Dirt bikes were all the rage back then and while the CB77 wasn't "your grandfather's Oldsmobile" it was "your older brother's former street biker." That said, a friend who was into dirt bikes was totally shock at how hard it pulled in 2nd gear. The torque curve and gear ratio were WELL matched. One of a handful of well remembered motoring experiences in my 50 years of possessing a drivers license was hitting 2nd gear on the CB77 and cranking the throttle. 🙂

I had Dream bullit proof engines. However rear fender split from viberations. Thanks for the memory.

I had a 73' TM400 with a flywheel, got me from Novice to Am. Desert District 37. Bought a new 76' RM370 got me to Expert. Suzuki engines and transmissions were so much better than the 71' Yamaha RT360, had to put new tranny gears in that every time I took it to a MX track. BUT the Yamaha taught me how to be a Motorcycle Mechanic, which turned into a Service Manager and was my occupation for 40 yrs. So I have Yamaha to thank for a great jobs in Honda Dealerships in So. Cal. and Nor. Cal.

Love my Heritage Special that I bought new in 1985 - it still runs great. Greatings from Switzerland

That is quite a collection of Hodakas! A correction is needed - Hodakas were manufactured and assembled in Japan. They were NOT assembled in the states. (This information provided a former employee of PABATCO in Athena, OR.)

the 71 tm400 was the best e-ticket ride ever invented and yeah they didn't handle, it's kinda hard to turn with your front wheel always in the air and no you couldn't win on one but that didn't matter because it was such a rush, the 71 tm400 was the only bike that you'd come in at the end of a moto your arms were cramping, your legs were shaking so bad you could barely walk but you were still grinning for ear to ear, you haven't lived until you've twisted the throttle in 4th gear at 70 mph and found yourself practically having to climb up on the front fender to try and get the front wheel back on the ground, the funny thing is, even starting the bike could be just and dangerous as riding the thing and unlike riding it, there as no grinning when it kicked back on you, there was also no walking for a while...........

I rode a 74 tm400 a lot, i thought it was a great bike. Broad power band, and handling was fine. I could out run a mx360 anywhere with that tm.

TM 400, - I had one of these shitboxes, power came on super hard and a very short powerband. It almost took the fun out of riding.

Although you did point out that the bottom end of the CB77 engine was different, one of the chief differences in the sound as well as the performance of the two engines is the crankshaft configuration. The CA has a 360 degree crankshaft, with both pistons rising and falling together, but firing on alternate rotations. The CB has a 180 degree crank, with the pistons at opposite ends of the rotation. The two engines sound totally different. The CL77 Scrambler version also used the 180 crank. Another fun trivia fact - the Super Hawk used a fairly rearset footpeg location, which would have interfered with the kickstart arm. They redesigned the whole right side cover and mechanism so the kickstarter arm kicks to the front instead of the rear.

I was there at Carlsbad, when 'Roger', won the MX-GP, on a Suzuki "TM"!. ( Even though we were there for, "Rocket Rex Stanton, on the CZ!!!) Loved this podcast!! 👍 Please keep up the great work!! Some of these brings a tear to my eye. Some of the bikes you have ive owned, rode, and raced. Like old girlfriends from your past. The only difference is ones there, never age. ✌️😎👍

Nice coverage. I worked at a Suzuki/Kawasaki dealership in Westchester county, N.Y. and borrowed a TM400 to race from one of our customers. It was totally stock including what had to be the worst front tire that could be put on a race bike. Our introduction to the TM was laughable because we'd stall the engine when we let out the clutch due to the lack of flywheel effect. Once under way, it was like going into some kind of shock with the sudden power. On the track, I had difficulty cornering the big TM and after some examination felt like the fuel tank forced the rider too far rearward for good weight distribution so one always felt like the front end was going to wash out. I was an expert class weekend racer and wanted above all to return the machine to its owner without wrecking it. I was great off the line with it but due to handling difficulties couldn't find a trophy at the end.
