    Is there a point when squaring these faces to the CL of the bore that the bolt handle cam timing is effected ?

    I own the Winchester mid 70 action rifle that has the action like the Rem 700 so looking at the back of the bolt one lug has the bluing, and the other side is wore off the bluing telling just one lug is making contact. I looked at the bolt lugs on my Weatherby Mark 5 and the same thing is some lugs are making contact and other lugs have bluing showing indicating no contact on lock up

  • @ericschulze5641
    @ericschulze5641 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

    So precise sloppy fit is better than a precise polished casting from the factory

    • @apexcustomrifles
      @apexcustomrifles 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      It's isn't sloppy. The factory machining is not precise. Example most factory 700 actions will only have one lug with 70% contact or one and maybe 20% contact on the other. This process makes both lugs 100% contact.

    • @ericschulze5641
      @ericschulze5641 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hope you don't take up rebuilding engines, I watched your bolt shroud video, & again apparently you think a loose fit = a tighter precision fit

  • @ericschulze5641
    @ericschulze5641 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

    K I will keep trying to get it ? I understand the reciever should be trued , which should also make the barrel sit deeper by however much metal was removed, which in turn in theory should cause the bolt to be too long by the same amount so now that would require work, however. . . Im not getting how removal of ANY material from the bolt lugs is going to make it tighter, kinda like having a perfect fitting shoe and then putting a smaller foot into it , looser not tighter no ? I would think the bolt face is the only thing that can be reworked providing head space is off

    • @apexcustomrifles
      @apexcustomrifles 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      You usually install a new barrel after this so dimensions have not much to do with the old barrel. New barrel gets cut to new specs. We are doing all this to make everything parallel and perpendicular to each other.

    • @ericschulze5641
      @ericschulze5641 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Not trying to argue, but the only way removing material from the bolt is going to make it tighter is if you start with a new oversized bolt, less is not more

    • @apexcustomrifles
      @apexcustomrifles 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      We are not removing anything from the diameter of the bolt, so no more clearance inside the bolt raceway. When we remove a few thousandths from the bolt lug or bolt face, that is added onto the new barrel. Therefor, you end with with tighter tolerances than it was before. If we wanted to ream the bolt raceway, we would then get a larger bolt or bush the bolt. We are looking for consistency and repeatability with the action. It doesn't make it more sloppy. If you reused the old barrel, then yes, if you take too much off you can make it more sloppy. However a couple thousandths you could theoretically re-use the old barrel as long as the headspace was still in spec. That's not what we are doing here though. New barrel gets fit to the new dimensions of the action after it's been trued.

    • @ericschulze5641
      @ericschulze5641 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I guess I'll never get it, the bolt lugs have nothing to do with the barrel, the bolt lugs should lock up without a barrel installed, the lug recesses in the action are what they are , removing material from the lugs ,is like taking a key and making it smaller no ? I guess I'll have to take my mauser to a gunsmith & he can explain how removing material from the already broken in lugs is going to make them fit better, ps I apprenticed with 3 different gunsmiths from around 1980- 1995 so I do have some knowledge of how things work I did mostly polishing and bluing work , they did the machining, but I did make & heat treat a few fireing pins 2 of them specialized in 1000 yard match rifles

  • @derekmcmurry
    @derekmcmurry 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Just my thoughts but I can't imagine going to any length of putting a new barrel and stock on a Rem 700 without completely truing the entire action/bolt. Of course each customer can choose what they want. I'm paying to completely true up the action first.

    • @apexcustomrifles
      @apexcustomrifles 19 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The scope retails for $2,400. There's close to $6,500 in parts with the scope. Then about $1,500 in labor. $160 brake too. They did cerakote and a stock paint job. NOT MY BUILD, but the pricing for a well-built rifle like this isn't too far off. Good parts here, but the builder didn't do their part.

  • @ericschulze5641

    Still don't understand why you would do anything to the lugs , they already fit , removal of any material from anywhere other than the face is just creating slop

    • @apexcustomrifles
      @apexcustomrifles 22 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Does two main things, trues them up the the bolt raceway, and creates 100% contact on BOTH lugs when in battery. Along with doing the bolt face, trues everything up to each other. This action as with many factory 700's had heavy contact on ONE lug. Not what you want for peak performance. When you install a new barrel, taking a few thousands of an inch off these areas doesn't matter.

    • @derekmcmurry
      @derekmcmurry 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Just the opposite. Nearly eliminates slop, asymmetry. This process nearly squares up all the surfaces that matter most. The key now is to install a new barrel, chambered properly to this action.

    There is a thing called tollerance stack up too. You might have a barrel already fitted that is 3 thou off but it is offset by a thou difference in the action of 5 thou. So the overall misalignment is 2 though. Then you put a dead on barrel on it and suddenly you are 5 thou off.

    Man if you saw what we used back in mid 2000's shooting p'dogs mid summer in +100degree days. We'd take 7-8 rifles just because everything would get so hot so fast on the towns. I brought a old CO2 tank with a line and would keep it in the tailgate of the truck. After shooting a rifle we'd lay it in a cradle insert the line and let the CO2 blow for a few min and it would make those barrels cold! Cost us about $35 to refill it each season but it worked, bit bulky.

    If you have a deep dent put a drop of urthane varnish in the dent. Let it dry for a few days. If you can still see the dent put another drop of urthane in the dent. Let dry for a few days. Continue until the varnish is flush with the surface then put the new finish on. Make sure you let it dry for a few days between drops or the previous varnish will create "gassing bubbles" in the new varnish. That is true whenever using any varnish. Don't rush or you will get to do it over. Use urthane varnish because it is clear.
