NEWBIE in GarageBand vs PRO in other DAWs
►► Download my Narration EQ guide - www.thehomeaudioproject.com/EQ
GarageBand is a fantastic starting point for beginners. I even have a full playlist on how you can use GarageBand for audiobooks.
That said, it’s essential to recognize its limitations.
As you grow as a narrator, there comes a time when you may want to consider making the switch to more advanced DAWs.
The question is, if you switch, will it help you create audiobooks of the highest quality and meet the stringent standards of platforms like ACX.

    Hey Ryan! This was an excellent resource. My only suggestion is the audio at the beginning of these videos. I almost didn't watch them because it was so bad. And this being a video about audio by an audio engineer, it seemed to undermine your credibility-which was dispelled by the great content. But others might not get past that dichotomy. Just a suggestion! Thanks again for the info.

    Is it possible to have a USB microphone and then edit the voice recording on Audacity without buying the audio interface? If so, Would it be the same quality results ? Thank you so much❤

    • @thehomeaudioproject
      @thehomeaudioproject 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I would personally avoid USB microphones due to the lack of control they have. USB microphones offer convenience but lack the sound quality, flexibility, and control of traditional setups with a microphone and audio interface. Traditional setups provide WAY better audio quality, more customization options, and better expandability, if using them for professional use. USB mics are more suited for beginners or portable recording.

    I don't mean to be rude, but especially for this sort of video it feels paramount that your own narration is of high quality, to "project" professionalism. There's clearly audible background noise present, that is accentuated by your hard gate - silence, then your voice comes in along with the soft fuzzy noise blanket it is draped in. Who am I to talk, I struggle with that too. Computer fan, especially the fridge since I live in a studio apartment. The best solution is of course to eliminate the noise at the source, but iZotope RXs spectral de noise can also do wonders. Like I said, I don't want to be an asshole, it's just that this sort of workflow tutorial will seem more trustworthy and the channel gain a larger audience if the person doing it seems to have his or her own audio in order.

    QUESTION: What, in your opinion, is the most reduction the Limiter should be doing before the sound quality and dynamics become affected? (For instance: until it sounds overall to be overly-compressed, even though it is a limiter capping those peaks?)

    • @thehomeaudioproject
      @thehomeaudioproject 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think it really depends on the energy of the read, like a action/adventure title, BUT I usually look for the range of -2 to -8 at most. Sometime you can get away with -10 in reduction, but that's usually rare and you have to be careful when you get into that amount of reduction.

    Ryan, that was a good workshop/seminar from the perspective of a contract engineer who is tasked with processing one, entire audio book file. However, I didn't see any explanation as to how to actually perform punch-and-roll itself from a narrator's perspective, how to actually punch and roll audio as its being recorded, live in a booth. Your teaching focused on the potential need for cleaning up possible audio clipping from punch-and-roll, done previously by the original narrator. If a narrator performs all of their own post-production editing, and using Audacity exclusively, for example, teaching from a Pro-Tools perspective has very little if any relevance. Also, I don't know about other narrators, but, I process each individual chapter or segment individually, rather than the entire audio book file at once, so, the need to insert spacing and room tone over an entire ten or fifteen hour file is never necessary.

    • @thehomeaudioproject
      @thehomeaudioproject 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You are correct, this is to only show (if you do punch and roll recording) how quick the editing portion can be. As for the narrator side of learning punch and roll, here's a video for that: th-cam.com/video/0JMJgWs9jAc/w-d-xo.html Every DAW is different, but (mostly) has the same capabilities. More videos are coming soon applying the same techniques in other DAWs.

    How is your process different if the narrator cuts out their mistakes manually instead of punch and roll?

    • @thehomeaudioproject
      @thehomeaudioproject 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Doing it manually can be hours upon hours of editing. When you use punch and roll, you're recording over the mess-ups in real time and keep going on with the following pages of the book. Then when editing happens, like I'm showing here, it can take only about 15 - 20 minutes to complete an edit for an entire 10+ hour book. Between punch and roll recording AND editing, you're saving hours of manual / mental labor.
