On this channel, I'll share my MTB experiences of trails, bike parks, bike + kit test's, how to videos, camping and other mountain bike related subjects, all to help and enthuse you to enjoy this awesome sport even more!
Mountain biking is a massive part of my life and has been for over 30 years, when I started racing my Klein Attitude back in 1990, hence my channel art! In this time I've experienced so many amazing locations, I've picked up some great skills and tips and I've found out that riding my bike in the great outdoors vastly helps my mental health and quality of life, all of which I aim to share it through my videos, to you all.
TH-cam is such an awesome interactive platform, so please let me know your thoughts or suggestions.
Thanks so much for taking the time to visit my channel.
My current Kit:
BIKES: Atherton AM170 & WHYTE 905 HCHT

CADAIR IDRIS - Is this a summit for mountain bikers?
In this video, I share my experience of riding up Cader Idris to find out if my Atherton A.170 can actually ride up a mountain!
#mtb #wales #mountains
Penygadair, or Cader Idris, is Snowdon’s geological twin in Southern Eryri (Snowdonia). Its summit stands at 893 (2930 ft) and only has one MTB access route that is basically a there and back route on the same trail - with steep and rideable sections on the way up then, fast and technical on the way back down. As you arrive at the gate near the Pony path, a steep, rocky, boulder field kinda climb looms ahead, which will most probably induce a hike-a-bike carry to just beneath the summit. The scenery is breathtaking everywhere, even on a wet day, so you’ll want to stop and take plenty of photos. The descent is quite leary straight from the summit, zigzagging through the boulder field for approximately 800m of gravity-fed fun!
Thanks, Ed, for your constant enthusiasm and for making the day so enjoyable, even in the torrential rainstorm we found ourselves in on the descent!
My Top Tips: Always prepare before the ride, I use the "7 P's" (Proper Planning and Preparation Prevents Piss Poor Performance) before, during and after the ride and always ride with people whom you trust.

Still not done these yet. If ya see this message Phill gimme a call as mite look at doing this on Sunday n wanna ask you about it. Looks mint
Hey Phill, we did this the day after ( Saturday ) I saw you at Dyfi on the Friday. The same route you too as well. Had to walk very carefully around some massive Bulls half way up 😂
Yeah dude🤜🤛. Hope you had better luck with the weather? And those bulls🤣. I’m planning to return for another go at the summit with my drone in better weather 😉.
Used to come here all the time as a teenager, now in my 30s and went back last year with my lad and his school and I had forgotten how steep the climbs were 😂, fair play to you for getting up them on a normal bike!
Cheers Ant👍. It’s such a lush place and so good that you can share your experiences with your lad, it’s exactly how my Dad introduced me to the mountains and I’ve been in love with them ever since. Thanks for watching dude🤜🤛🏴✊
Are the trails open?
As it’s not a bike park, they don't really close unless they are conducting forestry work. My visit was a couple of months ago now so it’s worth connecting with a local Afan group possibly on facebook for up to date info. Cheers for watching 🤜🤛
Good to see people riding full busy ...loads miss the last section (the best)..part out
It’s such a quality trail and quite addictive 👌. Cheers for watching 🤜🤛
@@UPHILLPHILL about 15 mins away is wylie ...my local place to ride ...great trails there
Another venue on my list 👌
Great content Phil i live a mile away from the trails in Rogerstone usually use the canal to get them. If you stay on the fire track road you can get to Twmbarlm and ride across the top of the mountain to Cwmbran were i was brought up, we are literally spoilt for trails in Wales which are beautiful and thats coming from a roadie but im finding mtb more enjoyable.
Same here man, I live in Bettws but can find a trail to take me anywhere I need to 👊🏾
Cheers dude🙏🏻. I’m absolutely addicted to Wales, the trails, scenery, people and everything about the place, always has me wanting more! I’m 4-5hours away and head there whenever I can. Can’t wait to return for more quality rides. Thanks so much for watching and for your comment. 🤜🤛🏴✊
What the hell is this! I cant believe it....... a ride in sunshine!?! Nice video keep them comming.
🤣🤣🤣. I know, highly unusual but blooming’ lovely! Cheers for your comment and for watching 🤜🤛
I have a Wreckoning, I’m also called Phil and I also live near Friston forest! Haha.
No way! We should meet up for a Friston ride and we’ll then be “full-Philled” 🤣. Cheers for watching dude🤜🤛
@@UPHILLPHILL haha sounds good! I’m about to turn my Wreckoning into a mullet.
Such a lovely, and also FANTASTIC video again, Phil. 🤩 You are producing great content that shares a real mountain biking experiences. This is especially true with you showing the “Push-up” a real consequence of MTB, 😊 sheep on the trails, (you can’t park there) 😉 and that as skilled as you are, you still show some “Whoopsie-Daisey” moments and some occasional “Wibbly-Wobbly” ones. 🙌🏼 I even LOVE you showing the scenery, as that’s also a reality, yes, we love to ride and descend, but taking time to appreciate our surroundings is also just as special and part of the ride. 😊 Such a BRILLIANT 🤩video as it even shows that with great experience and skill as you have, these things can happen. That’s what makes your content so relatable. 🤜🏼🤛🏼 Thank you for another great video, and Happy Trails, Good Sir! 🤙🏼
Thank you so much for your awesome and supportive comments. I truly love this incredible sport and the people that I have the opportunity to meet and interact with. Being able to share my experiences is all part of what makes me tick and of course I’m still learning every minute that I’m on my bike and in front of the editing screen. Cheers buddy and see you soon hopefully 🤜🤛✊
Thanks Phil that was a great review. Looking forward to riding it this week hopefully. All the best Brett.
Cheers Brett, I really appreciate you taking the time to watch my video👍. Have a fantastic ride, hope you enjoy it as much as I do✊
Hi Phill, Great video. I will be there next week, pitch 39. Solo camper and looking to visit for mainly jet aircraft on the Mach Loop, and of course some landscape photography in and around the local area. I will do some video......
Hey Steve👋. Thanks for taking the time to watch my video👍. I'm also a solo camper and I watched x5 F15 Eagles and x3 F35's doing multiple circuits of the Mach loop from the vantage point of Dyfi Mountain bike park in Pantperthog. Such an epic location for so many activities! Hope you have a fantastic time at the ⛺️site and the Mach loop 🛩.
@@UPHILLPHILL Thanks!! What was your pitch number? I am on 39 unless I choose to change it when there's, so says Carolyn!!!!
I was on pitch 36👌
this looks fantastic, I'm seeing Daryl on Thursday. Can't wait.
You’re gonna have such a great day 👌. Enjoy, learn lots and thanks for watching 🤜🤛
Personally as far as the South Downs are concerned I like Friston, but I think there's better riding around Whiteways (Arundel) and QE country park.
Thanks for the suggestions, I’ll have to try them out 👍. Cheers for watching 🤜🤛
Oh yeah. This bike does rip. To be honest it’s not flickable as a smaller travel and shorter angle head tube bike would be. I ride in Northern California and it took me a while to get used to the geometry of this bike. It is more aligned to true downhill trails. But, with some practice it is exceptional on tighter trails. As Evil describes it, it is a bike park bike. Having owned a true DH bike, I would say that this is a bike that can handle both enduro and downhill trails. I, in fact use mine as more of a trail and enduro bike
I would also add that this bike climbs like a non suspension bike. And, the rear suspension has an unlimited feel. It is amazing.
Yep, you’ve summed this rig up spot on! It’s a very capable beast indeed 👌
Agreed 👍. I remember saying to my buddy that it climbed like my hardtail!
Great aren't they😊
Oh yeah 🙌
still waiting mine. 12 weeks away …….😂😂😂
Stay strong✊, I feel your pain but it’s all going to be Soooo worth it 👌. Thanks for watching 🤜🤛.
The only issue is that we are not going to be able to spot the T-Rex lurking around the tent, apart of that I thing the tent I f k ING awesome ❤
Thanks for watching 👍. As for the T-Rex, the official advice is to stay completely silent and motionless as they apparently have terrible eyesight and hearing! 🤜🤛
Saw another TH-camr with one. It looks like such a cool for me and tool for you lol. But as a cross country cyclist. These videos would be boring. If the drones did 360. I would probably do it then.
It’s a great little gadget for the bonus/additional B roll kinda footage that allows the viewer to see a different view/aspect of the area. It’s not as fast as I’d like so I will be looking at a faster drone soon. Cheers for watching 🤜🤛
The trails look great, look forward to going down them with you when I can get some time 😀
Can’t wait for it buddy, you’ll love the climbing too🤣.
I rode this recently the slab was scary but very fun and doable anyway great vid 🤙🤘🔥
Thanks for watching and for your great feedback✊. It’s one super nice, old school Welsh trail for sure 👌

Great footage, and great editing, I ride there often. Its more or less local to me. And I dont know half of the trail names😂. There's some really steep stuff on the other side, but thats another level of riding. This vid will be a great introduction for people thats never been up there. Well done 👍
Dude, what a start to my morning, you’ve made my day with your comments, thank you 🙏🏻. My next visit will definitely be all about the steeper trails on the other side for sure. You’re very lucky indeed to call these trails local, enjoy your playground 🤜🤛
You didn't ride any of the steeps trails just for info.,
It was my first time riding there! They may not be the steepest of the steeps but steep nevertheless! Thanks for watching though 🤜🤛
Great video. I’m lucky enough to live 40 mins away from the masts. Not been for a while though, suffered a slipped disc before Xmas and due to a lack of fitness I’ve steered clear 😂 Gulley run is my favourite track over there - so much fun!
Cheers Dan, you certainly are very lucky to live so close! Wow what a venue👌. Gulley is fantastic for sure as is GnT. It was my first trail and loved the little surprise of the jumps😜. Best of luck with your recovery 🤜🤛
@@UPHILLPHILL yeah GnT is class! The builders up there have put a very special place together. I don’t know if you’ve ever ventured over to ‘Farside’ at all but they get a lot steeper… 😅 I have a few edits on my channel. They’re not for the faint hearted… lol.
Cheers dude, we didn’t have enough time for Far side on this trip but definitely will do next time, I’ll take a look 🤜🤛. I’m Sub’d ✊
Glad you like the trails...tcr is the unknown trail name..honestly you only done about 40% of the trail..Trailforks don't show most off them..look on strava

Hi Phil,i ordered my atherton beginning of April and I’m still struggling to get a date for bike, did you get many updates during build and how long did it take to get it? Thanks mark
Hi Mark. Great to hear that you’re on the waiting list for your Athy✊. Sorry to hear that you haven’t had any updates 😔. I had x5 updates of various stages of the build and from order date to completion, my bike took 4 months. As these bikes are hand built custom pieces of artwork, each machine will have its own lead time due to the factory work load, material availability, component availability and various other factors + Atherton bikes are a very small company with a very small team, however, I’d get in touch with them asap, call and ask for Alex, as she is so knowledgeable and incredibly helpful. Good luck Mark and I really hope your rig is complete and in your possession soon 🤜🤛
It weights too much, sadly
It’s definitely not a tent for those looking to go for lightweight camping!
Great vid and riding Phil. I’m heading to Dyfi on Friday on the Atherton for the first time! Bit nervous tbh but also excited!
Hi 👋. Thanks so much for your message/feedback and for watching ✊. You’re so gonna LOVE Dyfi, it’s absolutely my favourite location/area. The bike park is exceptional as are the numerous amazing local riding spots close by. I know exactly how you must feel as I had the same nervousness on my first ride there, but rest assured that it’s the best bike park by far and all others will pale in comparison after Friday! I’d recommend starting with Lovey Dyfi as a warm up to get a good gauge and feel for the place first and move on from there. This trail has so much progression potential and it’s the one that’s progressed me the most with speed, cornering, jumps and confidence. I genuinely wish you well and hope you have as much fun as I do every time. Stay safe and shred well 🤜🤛.
@@UPHILLPHILL thank you for your reply and tips! Much appreciated! I’ll start with Lovey Dyfi as you suggest. It feels like I’ll finally be riding my Atherton where it’s meant to be! My lad is very excited! Hopefully it’ll all be good and not too wet! 🤣. I’ll post a video on my channel when I get back 🤘👍
@888-mtb if it’s wet, it’s definitely better, the grip is phenomenal 👌. If you’re in the area for a few day’s, check out the Dyfi forest area, there’s ClimachX which is a great enduro loop and lots of off-piste black runs and also Whiterock the other side of the golf course, more exceptional off-piste black runs. The best track by far at the bike park is Racetrack, it’s a fast brutal trail but so rewarding. Enjoy and I look forward to seeing your videos ✊.
Beautiful trail
It really is!
what trail ?
I don’t know its name sadly but it’s over towards the area near Summer lightening that we can’t speak about 🤐.
I was thinking about this one for 2 people camping but there is a issue. when solo with the 2P you can sit on the floor and get changed then get in the bed. with the 3P the only viable option is 2 have beds apart with the 2ft space in the middle this means every time you enter you have to climb onto your bed to get your stuff from the middle and makes getting changed complicated. if you go with a double bed to one side someone has to climb over the other person each time. For one person save the £110 and extra 4kg and get the 2p version. for 2 people get the £200 fresh and black 4.1 apenaz its 5 minutes to set up and is a walk in tent. The only issue is drying it out as its 14ft long. for solo a 3p is overkill.
It all comes down to what works best for the people using it really. For me it’s great and works well but needs more space for cooking, so I’ll be purchasing the add on front tarp attachment.
Im camping solo (with car). I have the 2p tent but now considering the 3p tent: I like a spacious bed and would want to be able to keep my stuff in the tent.
I definitely find that my 3p has plenty of room for me, my inflatable bed base, table, coffee machine and all my bike gear (minus the bike!) and has room to easily get changed all in a compact and rapid pitch n pack package. It also fits perfectly in the rear footwell of the car too for easy access👌.
2nd comment I've uploaded. I've returned it twice now because the black poles keep coming out. Bought the air tent 4.1 for £300 since it was on discount. Can you tell me if I'm just the moron building it wrong or i keep buying defective ones?
Honestly not sure? I’d recommend contacting the manufacturer for guidance tbh. I’ve had no issues and I only uploaded my video to share my experience as a mountain biker who loves a bit of comfort camping and this tent works perfectly for me. I hope you have better success with your air tent. Best wishes 🤜🤛
What camera are you using?
I’m using a GoPro Hero 9 👌
Like the rear view camera gives a better sense of the steepness.
Thanks for watching Robert and for appreciating my rear view angle. GoPro’s definitely have a habit of flattening out the terrain so it’s nice that this view kinda sorts it 👌.
I went not long ago in the rain and it was amazing I’ve been riding properly for about a month I’m no where near good or fast yet but I still managed to get down racetrack with no crashes along with turns in the ferns it’s brilliant highly recommend
Hey Charlie, sounds like you’ll be going back again soon then👌. It really is an amazingly good place, thanks for watching 🤜🤛
@@UPHILLPHILL next trip planned already mate 🤣
@CharlieHorrocks-iv8cg enjoy dude😛🤘
We're can I buy this as can't find it on the link
Great Video, even if your cookie dunking duration was a little cavalier. I cant find this 3 person tent online on the decathlon website, only the 2 person version. Has this been discontinued?
Thanks so much for your comment, love the cookie bit 🤣. Looking at the website, it looks like it has been withdrawn, unless it’s been updated/replaced which happened with my larger Quechua inflatable family tent when they changed the colour. Keep an eye open or possibly contact them for more information. Cheers for watching and may your days be filled with successful cookie dunking 🍵🍪⛺️
Glamping at its finest! Great presentation of some very interesting gear. Thanks! ❤
Thank you so much for watching and your kind words, it means a lot 🤜🤛
Hi! I was wondering if you could review the arctic igloo oven tent?
Hey there, thanks for watching, although I think you may have commented on the wrong video? With regards to the Arctic tent review, nice thought but after investigating, its intended use is a little outside of my scope.
@@UPHILLPHILLAh yes I know this is a type of off-topic comment but after seeing your decathlon 2 second 3p tent review I thought you reviewed camping gear. But at the end of the day. It's night. Nah I'm just kidding. At the end of the day the tent does cost a shockingly high price of 3,500$ but after watching the Outdoor Boys use it it's decent with the rainfly and compatible wood stove. I highly recommend other tents though such as the Nemo Osmo Dragonfly tent available in 1P, 2P and 3P and is great for backpackers.
Wow Phill, Daryl! .... Did you get much out of it?
Sure did buddy, Daryl is a cracking trainer and delivers the skill’s in such an easy and relaxed manner that you instantly absorb the technique and understand it well enough to put it into practice. I’ve dialled in my fast berm’s and jumps much more now. 👌
@@UPHILLPHILL I did a jump course several years ago and it was brilliant. My tutor wasn’t a Daryl though
I have been many times but where is this trail I thought I rid them all but perhaps nnot
Baby maker is on the furthest side from the main building/car park. It’s near Red 10. Check out this map: www.swinleybikehub.com/trails
What a great day! My first coaching session and didn't really know what to expect but as Phill says, great clear instructions help fix some bad habits and learn some new techniques. Left feeling much more competent and confident on the trails. Thanks Phill and Daryl Brown Coaching, now go get a session booked and get evolved people!
What an awesome experience we had buddy, DB is a bit of a legend tbh👌. Thanks for a great day and for watching my little video. See ya on the next ride hopefully (keep your eye on the event page😉)
Good guide. Planning to do it this weekend so thanks for this.
Thanks so much, you’ll have a fantastic day, take plenty of water + add electrolytes and some trail snacks, there’s plenty of climbing and some epic DH’s to make it all worth it & the weather looks like it’ll be great for you. Enjoy and thanks for watching 🤜🤛
Nice😊
Thank you 🙏🏻 I really appreciate you watching 👍.
