Fun fact: there are cameos of the real survivors: Nando is the man who opens the door for the actor who plays him and his family at the airport before the trip. Carlitos Paez plays his own father at reading the list of survivors.Roberto is the doctor who supports and carries the actor who plays him at the hospital when they are rescued. And at the begining of the movie, Numa's home is the real Numa' s home
And the gentleman who Numa greets in front of his house is Numa's family in real life (cant remember if its his cousin, brother or nephew)🤍the more you look into it, the more details it has.
"I CARRIED MY 29 DEAD FRIENDS IN MY SUITCASE AND I PROMISED THAT WE'D ALL LEAVE FROM THERE" Gustavo Zerbino was the one who did not want to leave without the suitcase with all the belongings of his deceased friends. He said in a note that he was in charge of returning the belongings to each relative of the victims.
Zerbino's chapter in the book is truly heartbreaking. "We were the last ones to leave. After this nobody remained up on that icy mountain, nobody at all, because I carried them all away with me."

Fact about Nando, the one with long hair that walk with roberto to Chile. That guy had a skull fracture and brain hemorrhage. The raccon eyes he had confirms the blood that was flowing out of the skull. They thought he was dead and place him in the entry of the plane, and his head stayed in the snow. He woke up the third day from coma because his head was on the ice, he was not being hydrated and the fracture made him a natural pressure released from the brain. That BADASS walked 10 days in the snow. The biggest message is their friendship, cooperation, and the santity of life. They lived because they were taking care of each other, and keep each other alive.
It’s the kind of story that a writer would fabricate to tie to their religious background , with the being dead for three days then waking up to save everyone. It’s crazy that it actually happened
I love that Bayona made Numa the storyteller as representation of the non survivors as the media tends to just highlight the fact the survivors ate human flesh instead acknowledging that they all agree that they would’ve never made it out of that place without eating their remains. This is why Numa is the storyteller, the real heroes of this event in real life are the ones that didn’t survive.
The real survivors said that this film is really faithful to what was experienced in 1972 in the Andes, when they are rescued and the helicopter records, they are real black and white images of that time
Sergio Catalán, the Chilean muleteer who found Nando and Roberto, became a beloved person to the survivors. The survivors tell that they called him "father", they went to visit him in Chile, they took him to Uruguay, they helped him and his family financially, in his hip operation. Until Sergio passed away in 2020.
Same. I thought Numa survived because he was the storyteller in the movie. They led you to believe that he was one of the survivors who was retelling the story from his perspective. Which I think is actually brilliant.

I'm uruguayan, one of the survivors came to give a talk in my highschool and we could ask him questions, one of the guys in my class asked "what does human meat tastes like?" He responded: "i don't know, we covered in snow so we couldn't feel the taste." Poor guys.

Something that's not mentioned enough is that we don't have mountains in Uruguay as we are at sea level, we don't experience that cold either and October for us is spring so they were wearing spring clothes They had never experienced that altitude or cold and they were dressed for spring

Irónica y tristemente, nueve días después del rescate de los Andes, en Puerto Rico perdíamos a nuestro héroe en un accidente aéreo. Ese 31 de diciembre, Roberto Clemente se disponía a llevar ayuda a los damnificados del terrible terremoto de Nicaragua, cuando el avión en el que viajaba con las ayudas, se estrelló en las costas de Puerto Rico.
when they were climbing and nando said "there's the sea" and "chile is over there" he wasnt losing his mind, its because well, they were in the andes and that mountain range separates chile and argentina, so they knew that when walking to the east they were going to go to argentina, and that chile was in the west, he didnt see anything, he didnt see chile or the sea but he knew that it had to be right behind those mountains
Fun fact: the guy with the black eyes at the beginning he fractured is skull in the plane crash and was in a coma for 3 days. The others survivors thought he was dead so they felt him outside in direct contact with the snow, which is actually a treatment for that type of head injury…so they saved his life. Also, in an interview the survivors said that eating the dead bodies was the easiest decision to made cause they haven’t eaten anything for 10 days and that the hunger you feel at that point is consuming
This movie was an EXTREMELY humbling lesson for me. I was literally agonizing and I couldn’t stop saying “I can’t watch this anymore, I can’t take it” but every single time I’d say that, a wave of guilt would come over me and my thoughts would immediately be redirected to the victims. 72 days, I can’t fucking imagine making it through all of that. And the scars that something like this can cause you. I was watching this from the comfort of my home and “couldn’t take it”, how freakin selfish. This made me value life so much more, the smallest of things, the simplest moments. I’d also recommend watching the interviews of the survivors, there’s plenty of them around the internet and each one of them holds a precious life lesson.
Numa didn't hurt his leg. Someone stepped over his leg when moving around in the fuselage being so dark and crowded They never said who it was and of course it was an accident but with fatal consequences for Numa who was debilitated by his body rejecting human flesh and couldn't overcome the infection They describe him as someone who gave his all all the time. Canessa says about this that it's important to be a little selfish too and not love others more than ourselves but like ourselves. Even through his death he was key in their survival as it was his death what made Roberto stop stalling and start the expedition
17:40 "Perdón" is "Sorry" is sorry in Spanish, and yeah its pretty similar word on French, both lenguages French and Spanish are Latin lenguages. The difference between Spanish and Italian its even less, I dont know anything about Italian but due the amount of same words I can half-understand everything I hear in Italian.
I give it 10/10 This film, nominated for an Oscar as a foreign film (Spain, the director is Spanish, the same as LO IMPOSIBLE, also an excellent real survival film) is a gem, with unknown actors, in its original language and very realistic. I have been following this story for years and the level of detail and accuracy in the actual events is impressive. The performance of Enzo Vogrincic, who plays NUMA, is shocking. From doing small plays in Uruguay he is becoming a true star in Latin America. Well deserved!!
This is a heartbreaking true story, I'm from Argentina and basically grew up with it, it's a famous event around here. I'm glad you liked the movie and understood what the survivors went through and why they did everything they did
Glad that you watched this movie. Yes, it is hard to watch but the whole message and the take on this story from the director Bayona, is to show that the 16 that came back, did it by the effort and collaboration of all of them. This happened when I was 5 y.o., I'm Uruguayan and known this story since I have use of reason. This is the first movie that really depicted the harsh conditions they endured without falling on sensationalism and focused on their relationship, in their "society", their brotherhood in the mountain. As some mentioned, survivors participated in the movie with cameos but they also met with their counterparts in preparation of the movie, and in the case of the ones that did not survived, the actors met their families. It is a work of love, truly. In the technical part, not only the sound editing is great; they filmed the mountain scenes in Sierra Nevada in Spain, at really high altitude, but they also went to the real site of the crash, in the Andes, at 3.700 mts altitude, and made some takes with actors and filmed the landscape and all around the mountain range, and later added them digitally to every frame; so when we see the actors walking around the fuselage and the scenes from afar, and Nando and Roberto walking and seeing how far they were but went walking anyway, we see the actual mountains and the magnitude of the landscape, and it is as beautiful and truthful, as terrifying. It is understandable to mix the characters, but it is the intention to not put ones over others, that all of them were important to get out of the mountains. There is a very good 'making of' documentary of 30 mins in Nflix with the director and his team, if you'd like to understand more the technical aspects. This movie has been nominated for BAFTA, Oscars, Goya, and it truly deserves any possible award.
The story gets even crazy when you know some IRL details, like for example the fact that most of them were totally spoilled kids, Carlos Paez even had a "baby"sitter in his house when the plane crashed, most of them didnt knew how to wash a shirt or how to cook some noodles (to put it on perspective) neither they had boy scout experience or something like that, it was even THE FIRST TIME seeing snow for most of them (Uruguay is a country without snow or high points where snow generates.)

@@Madvisionnthis movie is a Spaniard production with a Spaniard director but the cast is entirely made up of Uruguayans and Argentinians and the director specifically wanted unknowns as to not take attention from the real story and put more importance to some over others. After this movie many of these actors will not be unknown anymore cause they acted their asses off!

The movie was filmed partially in the mountains in Sierra Nevada, Granada, Andalucía, Spain, and partially at the real crash site in the Andes. Some of the scenes were filmed at a studio in Spain. The parts where it shows them getting ready to go on the flight were filmed in the home country of the men in Montevideo, Uruguay and the rescue/hospital scenes were filmed in Chile. The reason their urine turned black is because after three days to a week, the body without proper nutrition begins to consume itself. Fats are the first to be taken, then the muscle. The body needs carbohydrates, proteins, and other nutrients to survive. These young men had none of that and only what they took from the dead. As for sadness of it all, yes, parts of it are sad. However, the main thing the survivors took away was that life is what you live it. Surviving is part of the story. Living for all of them including the dead is what was the theme of this all. They do not feel their survival was wrong. They all believe they survived for a reason. That reason, I believe, was to tell their story. Tell of those who died. That suitcase just wasn't a suitcase. It was the memories of those that died. Gustavo curated it in order to tell their story. Numa, Arturo, Susy, Marcelo....all of those who did not return. This story is our story. The story of our hearts and souls and what we can learn from the 72 days they endured. I for one have been with this story since 1976 when I read the book "Alive" written by Piers Paul Read. I've tried to see all the documentaries on this to try to learn something from it. To learn from Roberto, Nando, Carlitos, Gustavo.... Learn what I am in this life. What is my place. For me, it's all about the beauty of life and the dignity of death. That's what I have learned from all of the survivors. By the way, there are only 14 left. Javier Methol, the married man, died back in 2015, and Coche Inciarte died just last year. Javier's ashes were taken back up to the crash site and scattered as he wished to be with his Liliana. Roberto Canessa is now a pediatric cardiologist. He operates on fetuses that are still in their mother's wombs to repair hearts and heart tissues so when they're born, they are born healthy. Nando is a public speaker and owns many businesses. All of them remain friends to this day. They gather on the anniversary of their rescue to remember their time up there and to remember the dead. The families of the dead also gather to remember, but for them, they celebrate their loved one is alive in the survivors. This story is without equal to me.
If you are interested about the story, there are more than 12 books written by the survivors themselves, and there are thousands of talks from the survivors, there are two or three wich main job is to do conferences talking about this event. I love them they are a huge inspiration to me, lets just say that whenever I was very sad I thought of them and remember that we should never give up.
I have read the books by Nando Parrado, Roberto Canessa, Eduardo Strauch, Carlitos Paez and Pedro Algorta. I own the book by Coche Inciarte but have not read it yet. What other survivors wrote books and do you know if they are available in English? I have also read ‘Alive by Piers Paul Reid ’, ‘Survive’ by Clay Blair and ‘Society of the Snow’ by Pablo Vierci. I would love to read the book by Carlos Paez Vilaro describing his search for his son but I don’t think it has ever had an English translation.

I enjoyed this reaction so much!!! I felt like I was watching it for the first time again. Btw as a south american I'm glad we're in summer, lmao. I also wanna say that the helicopters weren't prepared to fly so high in those mountains, that's why they were concerned about the weight of what they were carrying, and it actually took two days to rescue all of the survivors, they prioritized the ones who were feeling weaker, and the rest were left with a rescue team to spend one more night in the Andes.

Some facts about the movie: Three of the survivors made cameos in the movie: - Fernando "Nando" Parrado: opens the airport door to his character at the beginning of the movie. - Roberto Canessa: Plays a doctor when they are received at the hospital because he is a doctor in the real life. - Carlos Paez Rodríguez: Represents his own father (Carlos Paez Vilaró) when he reads the list of survivors reading the name of his own son (“Carlitos Miguel Paez, my son”). And they were there for 72 days. On the first day of rescue, they took some of them and a group of rescuers stayed who set up a tent a little away because of the smell. The next day they rescued the others. - The house where Numa arrives is the real Numa's house and the walker is a Numa's nephew. - The suitcase that Gustavo Zerbino didn't want to leave in the Andes was full of belongings of the deceased that he took to their respective families. - The actors underwent a diet under strict medical supervision so that their bodies would more realistically reflect the effects of what the survivors went through. - The survivors and the families of those who passed away say that this movie is much more faithful to the real events, unlike the film 'Alive!' which was more of a spectacle than a tribute. In addition to changing the names of the characters, they altered almost the entire story. - All the survivors (except for 2 who died in 2013 and 2020) are still alive. You can search for their accounts on Instagram. - The location of the accident (Valle de las Lágrimas [Valley of Tears]) can still be visited today, starting from Argentina (as it is a substantially shorter journey): it takes several days on horseback and hiking through the mountains. It requires several days of planning and good physical condition. - They were there for 72 days. On the first day of the rescue, they took some of them to a different place, and a group of rescuers set up a tent a bit away because of the smell. The next day, they rescued the rest. Pero volviendo a la película la escena del accidente mismo...sudé frío, tuve palpitaciones. Hacía décadas o es la primera vez que me sucede algo así. Es muy buena la película, los actores...y pienso en la gente que tuvo que vivirlo...yo hubiese muerto enseguida y sino me hubiese vuelto loca. Son muy fuertes
This movie was filmed in the exact place the plane crashed back in 1972. They even camped around that area. They used real snow for the avalanche scene.
they filmed in spain, the director went to "Los andes" and stayed only one night, he couldn't stay longer because he had horrible headaches, they did film the mountains for about 20 days to get the plane shots and the surroundings to replace the background in" SIerra Nevada", where they filmed the movie at a height altitude but Enzo Vogrincic (Numa) did went to Los andes with Bayona to film some shots
The part when you said I’m going to watch a Disney movie after, that was me lol. But I cried when you cried when Numa died. And yes this movie was very immersive, insane. And you must watch the movie a couple of times to fully remember each character & everyone in the movie was very vital. I know all of the survivors name by heart how. So sad 😞but very thankful for the ones who survived.
The entire movie was shot in Sierra Nevada, almost all the actors were new. They were hungry, cold, afraid. It was the conditions imposed by Bayona, its director who went to Uruguay to cast. some are still alive. Only one of them never spoke about the accident again.
Thanks for reacting to this movie! My parents' generation lived the real story, and watched its american adaptation (Alive, 1993); but this new film has been the most realistic... maybe because of the cast, editing and amazing soundtrack .
The corps were never rescued from the place of the accident. They were buried in a common grave due to the situation. Even those which were intact are also buried in the same grave.
This movie deserves an Oscar, I hope so. I'm ecuadorian and I grew up hearing about these survivors, I watched ALIVE in 90's but this is my favorite because Society of the Snow is focused in the survivors' perspective being one of the main character Numa, I cried when he died, even more when I read the saying that he wrote.
The music after the announcement that the search had ended, was a commercial break. I thought it was marvelous. The way the fish eye caught close ups of them all going insane, losing it, shedding their hope, and then the camera gets away, the commercial comes on the radio: life was still going on, without them, the world was moving on. AMAZING shot!
The scene when Nando and Roberto are at the top of the mountain and Nando asks Roberto to walk along with him, I loved that scene, it’s so inspiring. Keep moving forward, never give up, that’s the message of the movie. It’s very simple but it moves you to the bones. PD: I totally agree with what you said, that the movie didn’t make a great job at introducing every character. It was confusing and I kept forgetting who was who. But the rest to me was flawless.
Una cosa que no sale aquí es que, cuando creyeron que les habían visto, se comieron casi todo lo que tenían porque pensaron que les rescatarían al día siguiente. Ahora dicen que, si se arrepienten de algo, es de no haber empezado antes a comer carne, porque hubieran estado más fuertes y tal vez habrían muerto menos. El padre de Coco, el chico que escribió la carta, era médico, y dijo que había sospechado la verdad desde el principio, y que se alegraba de que hubieran 45 personas en el avión, porque así pudieron sobrevivir 16. Fue muy generoso, teniendo en cuenta que se comieron también a su hijo.
I think one reason there's not much focus on the individuals is bc the focus is on them as a team. It was a team effort. Each of them was essential to the survival of 16. One of the parents of those who died even said that they were grateful there were 40 bc it made possible for 16 to survive. It's heartbreaking but true. Had all of them survived none of them would have survived as they would have starved to death and wouldn't have had the strength to get out The tragedy and the miracle are intertwined
They are actually shooting at the actual wreckage site at the time when the plane crashes so they could make it as realistic as possible for what they experienced
They shot some images of the mountains and the view for post production, but because of the height and weather conditions, the filmed with the actors in a lower terrain in Sierra Nevada in Spain.

En Uruguay fue el lugar donde menos se los criticó, principlamente porque tenemos un estado laico y somos el pais de america más ateo. Sin embargo paises como chile y argetina que todavia se inundan en religión les dieron con todo. Acá en Uruguay hasta se estrenaron en el cine sus documentales, siendo de lo mas visto, tienen un museo, Parrado tuvo su programa de TV y Canessa es queridos por todos porque SALVA VIDAS de muchos niños. Antes de hablar de Uruguay lavate la boca con listerine. Ustedes no saben nada de la historia, recien desde diciembre con esta pelicula se acordaron que existía. Fun facts. It actually take 2 days for the helicopters to take all of them, like half of them needed to stay one day more (with a medic) *the photos at the end and when they found the boys the videl record are actually the real ones when they found them *there was another friend/teammate that it was supose to go with them but because the overslept and lost the fly they gave his seat to a woman who was traveling to her sons wedding. Sadly the friend after that died 20 or 30 years later for falling asleep while driving *it took 10 hours at Sergio Catalan on horseback to find help *when they told the names, they said for error one who was actually dead so yeah....the parents of the boy lost twice their son *they didnt want to tell about the eating people thing so they said he survived by eating cotton, clothes, plants , etc but it wss hard to believe, people actually said that they killed others for the food etc, so the boys had to make a press conference to said that no they didnt kill anyone, they were already dead and it was survive or die. The church even say that they didnt sin for that, it was to survive

Another fact that didnt show in the movie, after they were rescued, the Pope send them a telegram, praising them for their courage giving them his blessing and saying they acted as god intended, since god put us on this earth to live not to die, and that not to have eaten would have been the same as commiting suicide (a terrible sin for the church doctrine as bad as murder)
I always kind of commend people for watching this and sticking it through to the end because it is a very hard film to watch. It's so brutal and pulls no punches, so fearlessly realistic that it gives it's audience nowhere to hide. There's no score to give them security in scenes that really would be ruined by one; it would do away with the feeling of isolation, instead just letting the horror of the story happen to have the desired effect.
remember that scene of one of them explaining the plain rout? well that was the cause of the accident, there was no visibility and no radar or fancy equipment back then, so they fly by instruments, meaning they calculate the time of flight and wind and all that to estimate were they are. they were going thru the safe pass but the co pilit made a mistake, dint took in to account the strong wind against them, so by his estimates, they though they were already pass the mountains on the Chilean side, meaning the town of Curico, so the pilot headed north... in reality they were still in the mountain pass, so when the pilot turned north, he turned the plain to the mountains, in short, the co pilot mistake made the pilot turn the plain north 6min ahead of time. thats why they crashed, and thays why they though they crashed on chile, when in fact they were still on the Argentinian side. If they had know that and the 2 men headed east instead of west, on the other side of the mountain there was a hotel resort further down. Also, about the eating, they ate cigarrets, shoe laces, and even tried to eat the suitcases
i give this movie 10/10! They deserve it! This is a true story and the movie is making a little justice of the real story... because the two movies prior were disgusting and didn´t give the credit this story deserves!
I first knew about this story 52 years ago, when I read front page of the newspapers in 1972. since then I have read all the books, seen the 3 movies SURVIVE 1976, ALIVE 1993 and Society 2024. So transfixed that I even sing the song- Break it all- (the song at the airport scene) on my youtube channel. Its very real for me as I am similar age to the survivors. 💖💖🌹🌹New Subscriber here ✌✌
Maybe you don't remember a lot of names because they are in another language. All of them were imoortant for the story, all of them did their part in it, all of them deserved to be mentioned. Beautifil movie
FWI Curico is a city in Chile. The flight plan was to go fron Mendoza towards the south, pass the andes near Curico, and turn north towards Santiago (Chile's capital city)
When watching such movies i feel so grateful for the life i have, and so shameful when taking many things for granted 😓 it’s so heartbreaking to realize such thing had happened in real life 💔 the way they cooperated and helped each other is the only reason, they even had survivors. Magic of being a human 🤍 ✨

Gustavo Zerbino was the one who did not want to leave without the suitcase with all the belongings of his deceased friends. He said in a note that he was in charge of returning the belongings to each relative of the victims.
Zerbino's chapter in the book is truly heartbreaking. "We were the last ones to leave. After this nobody remained up on that icy mountain, nobody at all, because I carried them all away with me."

Fact about Nando, the one with long hair that walk with roberto to Chile. That guy had a skull fracture and brain hemorrhage. The raccon eyes he had confirms the blood that was flowing out of the skull. They thought he was dead and place him in the entry of the plane, and his head stayed in the snow. He woke up the third day from coma because his head was on the ice, he was not being hydrated and the fracture made him a natural pressure released from the brain. That BADASS walked 10 days in the snow.
The biggest message is their friendship, cooperation, and the santity of life. They lived because they were taking care of each other, and keep each other alive.

I love that Bayona made Numa the storyteller as representation of the non survivors as the media tends to just highlight the fact the survivors ate human flesh instead acknowledging that they all agree that they would’ve never made it out of that place without eating their remains. This is why Numa is the storyteller, the real heroes of this event in real life are the ones that didn’t survive.
The real survivors said that this film is really faithful to what was experienced in 1972 in the Andes, when they are rescued and the helicopter records, they are real black and white images of that time
Sergio Catalán, the Chilean muleteer who found Nando and Roberto, became a beloved person to the survivors. The survivors tell that they called him "father", they went to visit him in Chile, they took him to Uruguay, they helped him and his family financially, in his hip operation. Until Sergio passed away in 2020.
Same. I thought Numa survived because he was the storyteller in the movie. They led you to believe that he was one of the survivors who was retelling the story from his perspective. Which I think is actually brilliant.

when they were climbing and nando said "there's the sea" and "chile is over there" he wasnt losing his mind, its because well, they were in the andes and that mountain range separates chile and argentina, so they knew that when walking to the east they were going to go to argentina, and that chile was in the west, he didnt see anything, he didnt see chile or the sea but he knew that it had to be right behind those mountains

Fun fact: the guy with the black eyes at the beginning he fractured is skull in the plane crash and was in a coma for 3 days. The others survivors thought he was dead so they felt him outside in direct contact with the snow, which is actually a treatment for that type of head injury…so they saved his life. Also, in an interview the survivors said that eating the dead bodies was the easiest decision to made cause they haven’t eaten anything for 10 days and that the hunger you feel at that point is consuming

This movie was an EXTREMELY humbling lesson for me.
I was literally agonizing and I couldn’t stop saying “I can’t watch this anymore, I can’t take it” but every single time I’d say that, a wave of guilt would come over me and my thoughts would immediately be redirected to the victims. 72 days, I can’t fucking imagine making it through all of that. And the scars that something like this can cause you.
I was watching this from the comfort of my home and “couldn’t take it”, how freakin selfish.
This made me value life so much more, the smallest of things, the simplest moments.
I’d also recommend watching the interviews of the survivors, there’s plenty of them around the internet and each one of them holds a precious life lesson.

Numa didn't hurt his leg. Someone stepped over his leg when moving around in the fuselage being so dark and crowded
They never said who it was and of course it was an accident but with fatal consequences for Numa who was debilitated by his body rejecting human flesh and couldn't overcome the infection
They describe him as someone who gave his all all the time. Canessa says about this that it's important to be a little selfish too and not love others more than ourselves but like ourselves. Even through his death he was key in their survival as it was his death what made Roberto stop stalling and start the expedition
17:40 "Perdón" is "Sorry" is sorry in Spanish, and yeah its pretty similar word on French, both lenguages French and Spanish are Latin lenguages. The difference between Spanish and Italian its even less, I dont know anything about Italian but due the amount of same words I can half-understand everything I hear in Italian.

I give it 10/10 This film, nominated for an Oscar as a foreign film (Spain, the director is Spanish, the same as LO IMPOSIBLE, also an excellent real survival film) is a gem, with unknown actors, in its original language and very realistic. I have been following this story for years and the level of detail and accuracy in the actual events is impressive. The performance of Enzo Vogrincic, who plays NUMA, is shocking. From doing small plays in Uruguay he is becoming a true star in Latin America. Well deserved!!

This is a heartbreaking true story, I'm from Argentina and basically grew up with it, it's a famous event around here. I'm glad you liked the movie and understood what the survivors went through and why they did everything they did
Glad that you watched this movie. Yes, it is hard to watch but the whole message and the take on this story from the director Bayona, is to show that the 16 that came back, did it by the effort and collaboration of all of them. This happened when I was 5 y.o., I'm Uruguayan and known this story since I have use of reason. This is the first movie that really depicted the harsh conditions they endured without falling on sensationalism and focused on their relationship, in their "society", their brotherhood in the mountain. As some mentioned, survivors participated in the movie with cameos but they also met with their counterparts in preparation of the movie, and in the case of the ones that did not survived, the actors met their families. It is a work of love, truly. In the technical part, not only the sound editing is great; they filmed the mountain scenes in Sierra Nevada in Spain, at really high altitude, but they also went to the real site of the crash, in the Andes, at 3.700 mts altitude, and made some takes with actors and filmed the landscape and all around the mountain range, and later added them digitally to every frame; so when we see the actors walking around the fuselage and the scenes from afar, and Nando and Roberto walking and seeing how far they were but went walking anyway, we see the actual mountains and the magnitude of the landscape, and it is as beautiful and truthful, as terrifying.
It is understandable to mix the characters, but it is the intention to not put ones over others, that all of them were important to get out of the mountains. There is a very good 'making of' documentary of 30 mins in Nflix with the director and his team, if you'd like to understand more the technical aspects.
This movie has been nominated for BAFTA, Oscars, Goya, and it truly deserves any possible award.
The story gets even crazy when you know some IRL details, like for example the fact that most of them were totally spoilled kids, Carlos Paez even had a "baby"sitter in his house when the plane crashed, most of them didnt knew how to wash a shirt or how to cook some noodles (to put it on perspective) neither they had boy scout experience or something like that, it was even THE FIRST TIME seeing snow for most of them (Uruguay is a country without snow or high points where snow generates.)

@@Madvisionnthis movie is a Spaniard production with a Spaniard director but the cast is entirely made up of Uruguayans and Argentinians and the director specifically wanted unknowns as to not take attention from the real story and put more importance to some over others. After this movie many of these actors will not be unknown anymore cause they acted their asses off!
I do hope you know this whole movie is absolutely real, almost down to every dialogue actually happened...

Worst to know it's based on true events from 1972
The movie was filmed partially in the mountains in Sierra Nevada, Granada, Andalucía, Spain, and partially at the real crash site in the Andes. Some of the scenes were filmed at a studio in Spain. The parts where it shows them getting ready to go on the flight were filmed in the home country of the men in Montevideo, Uruguay and the rescue/hospital scenes were filmed in Chile.
The reason their urine turned black is because after three days to a week, the body without proper nutrition begins to consume itself. Fats are the first to be taken, then the muscle. The body needs carbohydrates, proteins, and other nutrients to survive. These young men had none of that and only what they took from the dead.
As for sadness of it all, yes, parts of it are sad. However, the main thing the survivors took away was that life is what you live it. Surviving is part of the story. Living for all of them including the dead is what was the theme of this all. They do not feel their survival was wrong. They all believe they survived for a reason. That reason, I believe, was to tell their story. Tell of those who died. That suitcase just wasn't a suitcase. It was the memories of those that died. Gustavo curated it in order to tell their story. Numa, Arturo, Susy, Marcelo....all of those who did not return. This story is our story. The story of our hearts and souls and what we can learn from the 72 days they endured. I for one have been with this story since 1976 when I read the book "Alive" written by Piers Paul Read. I've tried to see all the documentaries on this to try to learn something from it. To learn from Roberto, Nando, Carlitos, Gustavo.... Learn what I am in this life. What is my place. For me, it's all about the beauty of life and the dignity of death. That's what I have learned from all of the survivors.
By the way, there are only 14 left. Javier Methol, the married man, died back in 2015, and Coche Inciarte died just last year. Javier's ashes were taken back up to the crash site and scattered as he wished to be with his Liliana. Roberto Canessa is now a pediatric cardiologist. He operates on fetuses that are still in their mother's wombs to repair hearts and heart tissues so when they're born, they are born healthy. Nando is a public speaker and owns many businesses. All of them remain friends to this day. They gather on the anniversary of their rescue to remember their time up there and to remember the dead. The families of the dead also gather to remember, but for them, they celebrate their loved one is alive in the survivors. This story is without equal to me.

If you are interested about the story, there are more than 12 books written by the survivors themselves, and there are thousands of talks from the survivors, there are two or three wich main job is to do conferences talking about this event. I love them they are a huge inspiration to me, lets just say that whenever I was very sad I thought of them and remember that we should never give up.
I have read the books by Nando Parrado, Roberto Canessa, Eduardo Strauch, Carlitos Paez and Pedro Algorta. I own the book by Coche Inciarte but have not read it yet. What other survivors wrote books and do you know if they are available in English? I have also read ‘Alive by Piers Paul Reid ’, ‘Survive’ by Clay Blair and ‘Society of the Snow’ by Pablo Vierci. I would love to read the book by Carlos Paez Vilaro describing his search for his son but I don’t think it has ever had an English translation.

I also wanna say that the helicopters weren't prepared to fly so high in those mountains, that's why they were concerned about the weight of what they were carrying, and it actually took two days to rescue all of the survivors, they prioritized the ones who were feeling weaker, and the rest were left with a rescue team to spend one more night in the Andes.
I didn't expect you to react to this movie. I haven't seen you in a while and I'm glad to see another reaction. I have heard about this story since I was a child, and now at 23 years old it was incredible to see such a well made movie telling the story. Good reaction

Some facts about the movie:
Three of the survivors made cameos in the movie:
- Fernando "Nando" Parrado: opens the airport door to his character at the beginning of the movie.
- Roberto Canessa: Plays a doctor when they are received at the hospital because he is a doctor in the real life.
- Carlos Paez Rodríguez: Represents his own father (Carlos Paez Vilaró) when he reads the list of survivors reading the name of his own son (“Carlitos Miguel Paez, my son”).
And they were there for 72 days. On the first day of rescue, they took some of them and a group of rescuers stayed who set up a tent a little away because of the smell. The next day they rescued the others.
- The house where Numa arrives is the real Numa's house and the walker is a Numa's nephew.
- The suitcase that Gustavo Zerbino didn't want to leave in the Andes was full of belongings of the deceased that he took to their respective families.
- The actors underwent a diet under strict medical supervision so that their bodies would more realistically reflect the effects of what the survivors went through.
- The survivors and the families of those who passed away say that this movie is much more faithful to the real events, unlike the film 'Alive!' which was more of a spectacle than a tribute. In addition to changing the names of the characters, they altered almost the entire story.
- All the survivors (except for 2 who died in 2013 and 2020) are still alive. You can search for their accounts on Instagram.
- The location of the accident (Valle de las Lágrimas [Valley of Tears]) can still be visited today, starting from Argentina (as it is a substantially shorter journey): it takes several days on horseback and hiking through the mountains. It requires several days of planning and good physical condition.
- They were there for 72 days. On the first day of the rescue, they took some of them to a different place, and a group of rescuers set up a tent a bit away because of the smell. The next day, they rescued the rest.

This movie was filmed in the exact place the plane crashed back in 1972. They even camped around that area. They used real snow for the avalanche scene.

they filmed in spain, the director went to "Los andes" and stayed only one night, he couldn't stay longer because he had horrible headaches, they did film the mountains for about 20 days to get the plane shots and the surroundings to replace the background in" SIerra Nevada", where they filmed the movie at a height altitude
but Enzo Vogrincic (Numa) did went to Los andes with Bayona to film some shots

The part when you said I’m going to watch a Disney movie after, that was me lol. But I cried when you cried when Numa died. And yes this movie was very immersive, insane. And you must watch the movie a couple of times to fully remember each character & everyone in the movie was very vital. I know all of the survivors name by heart how. So sad 😞but very thankful for the ones who survived.
The entire movie was shot in Sierra Nevada, almost all the actors were new. They were hungry, cold, afraid. It was the conditions imposed by Bayona, its director who went to Uruguay to cast. some are still alive. Only one of them never spoke about the accident again.
Thanks for reacting to this movie! My parents' generation lived the real story, and watched its american adaptation (Alive, 1993); but this new film has been the most realistic... maybe because of the cast, editing and amazing soundtrack .
The corps were never rescued from the place of the accident. They were buried in a common grave due to the situation. Even those which were intact are also buried in the same grave.

This movie deserves an Oscar, I hope so. I'm ecuadorian and I grew up hearing about these survivors, I watched ALIVE in 90's but this is my favorite because Society of the Snow is focused in the survivors' perspective being one of the main character Numa, I cried when he died, even more when I read the saying that he wrote.

The way the fish eye caught close ups of them all going insane, losing it, shedding their hope, and then the camera gets away, the commercial comes on the radio: life was still going on, without them, the world was moving on. The scene when Nando and Roberto are at the top of the mountain and Nando asks Roberto to walk along with him, I loved that scene, it’s so inspiring. Keep moving forward, never give up, that’s the message of the movie. It’s very simple but it moves you to the bones.
PD: I totally agree with what you said, that the movie didn’t make a great job at introducing every character. It was confusing and I kept forgetting who was who. But the rest to me was flawless.
The true meaning of brotherhood is what this movie is all about.

Una cosa que no sale aquí es que, cuando creyeron que les habían visto, se comieron casi todo lo que tenían porque pensaron que les rescatarían al día siguiente. Ahora dicen que, si se arrepienten de algo, es de no haber empezado antes a comer carne, porque hubieran estado más fuertes y tal vez habrían muerto menos.
El padre de Coco, el chico que escribió la carta, era médico, y dijo que había sospechado la verdad desde el principio, y que se alegraba de que hubieran 45 personas en el avión, porque así pudieron sobrevivir 16. Fue muy generoso, teniendo en cuenta que se comieron también a su hijo.
I think one reason there's not much focus on the individuals is bc the focus is on them as a team. It was a team effort.
Each of them was essential to the survival of 16. One of the parents of those who died even said that they were grateful there were 40 bc it made possible for 16 to survive. It's heartbreaking but true.
Had all of them survived none of them would have survived as they would have starved to death and wouldn't have had the strength to get out

You should Watch it again to recognise the characters ❤ it is a coral movie and all characters were important to achieve the goal
They are actually shooting at the actual wreckage site at the time when the plane crashes so they could make it as realistic as possible for what they experienced
They shot some images of the mountains and the view for post production, but because of the height and weather conditions, the filmed with the actors in a lower terrain in Sierra Nevada in Spain.

Eso es una mentira grande como una casa que algun chileno envidioso o argentino resentido inventó porque no fueron sus heroes. En Uruguay fue el lugar donde menos se los criticó, principlamente porque tenemos un estado laico y somos el pais de america más ateo. Sin embargo paises como chile y argetina que todavia se inundan en religión les dieron con todo. Acá en Uruguay hasta se estrenaron en el cine sus documentales, siendo de lo mas visto, tienen un museo, Parrado tuvo su programa de TV y Canessa es queridos por todos porque SALVA VIDAS de muchos niños. Antes de hablar de Uruguay lavate la boca con listerine. Ustedes no saben nada de la historia, recien desde diciembre con esta pelicula se acordaron que existía. Acá en URUGUAY se la recuerda siempre. Mirá que por se run pais de 3.5 millones no quiere decir que lo sepan todo de nosotros. No tenes idea.

Fun facts. It actually take 2 days for the helicopters to take all of them, like half of them needed to stay one day more (with a medic)
*the photos at the end and when they found the boys the videl record are actually the real ones when they found them
*there was another friend/teammate that it was supose to go with them but because the overslept and lost the fly they gave his seat to a woman who was traveling to her sons wedding. Sadly the friend after that died 20 or 30 years later for falling asleep while driving
*it took 10 hours at Sergio Catalan on horseback to find help
*when they told the names, they said for error one who was actually dead so yeah....the parents of the boy lost twice their son
*they didnt want to tell about the eating people thing so they said he survived by eating cotton, clothes, plants , etc but it wss hard to believe, people actually said that they killed others for the food etc, so the boys had to make a press conference to said that no they didnt kill anyone, they were already dead and it was survive or die.
The church even say that they didnt sin for that, it was to survive

Another fact that didnt show in the movie, after they were rescued, the Pope send them a telegram, praising them for their courage giving them his blessing and saying they acted as god intended, since god put us on this earth to live not to die, and that not to have eaten would have been the same as commiting suicide (a terrible sin for the church doctrine as bad as murder)

I always kind of commend people for watching this and sticking it through to the end because it is a very hard film to watch. It's so brutal and pulls no punches, so fearlessly realistic that it gives it's audience nowhere to hide. There's no score to give them security in scenes that really would be ruined by one; it would do away with the feeling of isolation, instead just letting the horror of the story happen to have the desired effect.

The survivors said that the first night was hell
remember that scene of one of them explaining the plain rout? well that was the cause of the accident, there was no visibility and no radar or fancy equipment back then, so they fly by instruments, meaning they calculate the time of flight and wind and all that to estimate were they are. they were going thru the safe pass but the co pilit made a mistake, dint took in to account the strong wind against them, so by his estimates, they though they were already pass the mountains on the Chilean side, meaning the town of Curico, so the pilot headed north... in reality they were still in the mountain pass, so when the pilot turned north, he turned the plain to the mountains, in short, the co pilot mistake made the pilot turn the plain north 6min ahead of time. thats why they crashed, and thays why they though they crashed on chile, when in fact they were still on the Argentinian side. If they had know that and the 2 men headed east instead of west, on the other side of the mountain there was a hotel resort further down. Also, about the eating, they ate cigarrets, shoe laces, and even tried to eat the suitcases
i give this movie 10/10! They deserve it! This is a true story and the movie is making a little justice of the real story... because the two movies prior were disgusting and didn´t give the credit this story deserves!
I first knew about this story 52 years ago, when I read front page of the newspapers in 1972. since then I have read all the books, seen the 3 movies SURVIVE 1976, ALIVE 1993 and Society 2024. So transfixed that I even sing the song- Break it all- (the song at the airport scene) on my youtube channel. Its very real for me as I am similar age to the survivors. 💖💖🌹🌹New Subscriber here ✌✌

FWI Curico is a city in Chile. The flight plan was to go fron Mendoza towards the south, pass the andes near Curico, and turn north towards Santiago (Chile's capital city)

When watching such movies i feel so grateful for the life i have, and so shameful when taking many things for granted 😓 it’s so heartbreaking to realize such thing had happened in real life 💔 the way they cooperated and helped each other is the only reason, they even had survivors.
