LOL. I am a Montana and Wyoming native who is thrilled that you found a coyote in your passion fruit tipi! Great job creating an environment for the native wildlife in your area. I know you need to protect your chickens and don’t want that little trickster riling up your hens, but take this presence as a big compliment.
You can always contact your local wildlife wardens via the city animal control office if Mr/s. Coyote shows back up. They are an excellent resource for deterrence tips and would know how to coyote-proof your chicken run. I grew up around the Salish-Kootenai Indigenous Nations in Montana; in our tradition Coyote is a trickster who’s more active in the winter. If things are hinky in your garden, you know who to blame! ❤

And those suckers are much faster than many people realize too. My dad grew up in Florida and used to help his native American friend hunt them occasionally, and they sometimes lost their bait because the gator moved faster than they could

We've been bothered by coyotes two or three times now. They killed two geese and two peacocks and I had a camera up in the yard and I found that what they do is they'll dig a hole and bury their catch and then come back in 2 days and dig it up and eat it amazing. Their vicious and they're dangerous and they have a 50 mi radius and is nothing to be done to deter them away. Fences don't help because the coyote will jump a 6 foot fence like nothing with their catch in their mouth. That was a very nice passion fruit video. Thanks!

Part of me feels kinda bad for the coyote, they must have felt so safe and comfy under the passion fruit. But also I’d hate if anything happened to your dogs or the chikkies. Hope that wild doggo found somewhere better to sleep at night, for themselves and for your neighborhood

I feel bad because the only reason they encroach into human environments, is because humans have encroached, decimated and completely taken over most of their natural environment in the first place. Can't be too mad at them for being desperate.

    • @ryan_cowan

Wild animals are as greedy and selfish as it is possible to be and if they can't find habitat they are by definition overpopulated. Welcome to nature, where everything is doing whatever it can to survive as comfortably as possible at the expense of everything else. Humans on the other hand are the only species that even has the capacity for empathy or the luxury to act on it

Thanks for the tips on pruning the passion fruit. I have several plants that have been growing for three years and they have absolutely gotten out of control. This happened once before, to include all the dry layers of vines underneath, and I cut it back completely to just about 18 inches from where the trunk comes out of the ground. It came back quickly and I had lots of passion fruit again in about 6 months.

My parents had a two-story carport that their passionfruit vine climbed on. It is going on over 12 years now and the plant is still going. Maybe build it a large overhead trellis to climb on. It would make finding the fruit much easier as well and much easier to clean up. I love passionfruit flowers and fruit. So sad that it is too cold here. I think it is a beautiful plant.

  • @OMGitsaClaire

It’s so interesting to see how tropical passion fruits grow. I’m used to growing the native passion fruit Passiflora incarnata (common name Maypops) which is a perennial that does back completely in the winter. You cut all the dead vines back in winter and remove them completely from the trellis and it regrows from the ground every year. The fruits are yellow inside and green outside and taste similar to tropical passion fruit. It’s popularly used for making homemade jellies here in the foraging community as it also grows wild. I’ve grown it in gardens in the past as the flowers are beautiful and great for pollinators and the edible fruit is a big bonus and one of the easiest native fruit to grow.

      3 big passion fruits
      1 can of condensed milk
1 can equivalent of heavy cream (use the empty condensed milk can to measure)
Add the pulp of the passion fruit to a blender and blend lightly, strain the blended pulp and reserve.

Time for a live trap and a long drive to the deep woods before there are babies. ;) BTW your passion fruit vines would look gorgeous trained horizontally between the cement block and the white fence that I see behind you. Then you could tame it to produce what you can eat and max out your pulp. You are going to have a lot of green material for your compost today! I've successfully used citrus peals beneath my windows to deter skunks and cats from making my life miserable at night time. Who knows maybe you could toss a few lemon peals in the den and see if it'll work for coyotes.

As long as you have chickens and huffing places, a coyote will not leave unless you get rid of it permanently.
They are predators, and your chickens, along with their eggs, are the prey.
They are varmints, and they're sneaky and knows you have chickens, so it'snot going away.
I've personally seen what one can do to a chicken coop and baby lambs.

I could have been more clear here, I am referring to it as such for familiarity and I am in no way am I trying to draw a comparison.

why cant you just leave your passion fruit tree alone so the Coyote has a place to stay? we human have taken so much land for our own use.,. where else can wild life/Coyotes sleep at night? i would even make things even more cosy for them.,.

Hey, what about the winecap mushrooms? Weren't they planted under the teepee? Will they survive with more sun under the teepee now?

    • @jacquesinthegarden
      @jacquesinthegarden  ปีที่แล้ว +2

They were under there but haven't spawned in a while, they probably won't be able to take the extra sun unfortunately :( I could try to move some of the material somewhere else but I will likely just start a new bed elsewhere

Charles Dowding (No-Dig guru) would disagree with not composting passion fruit vines/leaves. He successfully composts “weeds” like bindweed which appears to similar to Bermuda grass. Ask Kevin!

I had no idea that overgrowth of passion fruit can lead to coyotes...I'll need to double check my passion fruit tee-pee trellis this week.

Yes, more about passion fruit care and maintenance. My friend has one growing on a chain link fence. It's over 15 years old and I cut it at 20 feet along the fence line to keep it out of the willow tree. And everywhere it could get on the ground it was rooting. I cut some of the undergrowth but I really wasn't sure what I was doing so any advice is welcome and this was very welcome tutorial.

Unfortunately the coyotes are coming out earlier in the evening and later in the morning. They're prob trying to use that little pad in the day to bed down. We have a large patch of euphorbia and coyotes use it ev day around 7am to bed down.

You're a guy. The world is your urinal... Mark your territory in the same manner that canids & felids do... Really. It's fairly effective too. Gardeners frequently use coyote urine to deter deer, so why not use human urine to deter coyotes?

Don't know why people are so surprised to see coyotes, especially in California after all the fires and other outrageous weather disasters. It's not that unusual to see them in the suburbs along the shore of Connecticut.... have come across them myself.

The conduit pieces themselves are 10' long, with the shape we chose I believe the interior height comes in to about 8 feet.

We just planted two passion fruit against a chain link fence in our backyard to screen our neighbors unsightly yard. Looks like two of them should cover a 60 ft. fence rather handily based on your experience. We have lots of coyotes in our area as well, however we've never had one take up residence. Best of luck keeping him away from your chickens. He probably thought he was in bed and breakfast heaven with the sleeping quarters right next to a food source.
