The Amped Roots sounded the best to my ears. Emissary is pretty nice as well, but the standalone mode for the Amped takes the cake! I'Ve tested all Amped amps (try version) and they all sound amazing! Near Neural DSP level quality.
Not sure if anyone has mentioned it but some of my favorite amp plugins are from Poulin. The Hybrit (Marshall SLP/JCM800 based) is one I have used quite often.
Emissary is my favourite amp of all times. I played at different plugins and simulations, but cant find anything better than it. Ultra tight and agressive character without fizzy highs.
In this video the highs were fizzy AF!! 🙉🙉 I've also heard other people comment about problems with the highs in Emissary... I didn't notice anything on the individual presentations earlier in the video, but when u hear all the amps back to back in 8:50 -> u can easily notice it! Other surprising thing is that during that segment I also noticed that Ninja had the same exact fizzy highs and basically very similar tone to Emissary 😱 I've never noticed any similarity with them before!
I really like ROOTS, I have bought it but after some time of using it, I noticed that it worsk like Kemper profile, it really is one great sound that you kind of can adjust with EQ but it will sound almost the same = it won´t change overall feel and tone like real amp would. It is more like small EQ adjustment for better mastering.
I've mixed and mastered a song with my band, and we decided to use the Amped Roots for all the guitars. During quarantine we couldn't get together to track guitars with our amps, so we just try different amp sims. And let me tell you, that plug-in sounds amazing. I definitely would like to try all the other ones. Also, check Crunchman by NaLex. It's like a mod-marshall, but modern. Love your channel!
Amped roots is my favorite here. I would dial the gain back... This thing has so much gain, it's insane. You should also try the tse x50 (classic 5150).
I record two tracks using Emmisary .. which is High self. Guitars.. And other two tracks using ML sound lab which is Low shelfed.. total pack of 4 guitars playing same... 4 times.. and it sounds priceless.
Great comparison, Taylor. Amped Roots sounded the best here (although the Kuassa sounded awesome, too)). I love that you can just use it right out of the box. For kicks on the next one, you should throw Amplitube Custom Shop and Guitar Rig 5 Player into the mix and see if they still can compete with the truly free ones.
Good idea! Most of the time when I'm doing comparisons, I don't add things to the signal chain because I want to demonstrate the raw tones from whatever I'm demo'ing, but 100% this would help a few of these. I would bet the Kuassa plugin would benefit massively from a boost.
@@TaylorDanley Yes keep it raw so everyone can hear the real tones from the VST.True, i was suprised with the tone of kuassa and i just realized that kuassa is local product from my country indonesia, now i considered to buy their products 😂 keep it up your good content dude!
Good one brother. I actually use all of them. I suppose you already did, but the other NaLex ampsims are also awesome. And the new one, the AmpLex is some kind of a synergy kind of concept. You download the ampsim for free and a bunch of files that are actually various amps sims. Give it a try. And also, for me one of the best Peavey 5150 mark I ampsim is the tse x50, also FREE. I hope these advice will be helpful for you my dear bro. If you haven't already, try also the ToneLib GFX that is also free (you can use it free forever, even the standalone and plugin version reminds you that you can buy a license). As always cheers from Madrid, Spain.
@@TaylorDanley hey bro. I forgot to mention it the other day. There are a new free HASR Free Pack 2.0, the site honest amp sims reviews released this pack not long ago with some free preamps sims and other stuff. The point is that a Krunkenstein preamp is included, and you own yourself two or three Kranks. It would be very interesting if you could compare how close or far are the sim to the real tube amps. Remember the included preamp sims are just preamps, without power amps sim nor cab sims. But you can use also the free power amp sim from www.kvraudio.com/product/tpa-1-by-ignite-amps TPA-1 from ignite amps and the IRs loader that you like the most. Cheers bro.
Nice vid! This was the first time for me that Amped Roots sounded the best, ha! I've listened to all the free amps on youtubes and Roots has been my least favorite - it has sounded too metalcore'y to me with its fuzzy tone. BUT they just recently updated it to version 1.3, which is probably what u have (they added all those pedals, which were not in the original), so maybe it does indeed sound better now. It seemed to sound most balanced out of the bunch. But I think that for a fairer comparison all amps should have been tested with the same IR. For example I've heard another guy feature the Kuassa and he got an insane killer tone from it - one of my favorites of all tones! But he used a (free) overdrive and his special free IR. So, although the built-in IR in Kuassa is ok, I think u could have gotten much more out of it with a different IR (and an OD)! Also pay attention to the audio levels: some of the amps sounded louder than others, so that distracts from the comparison. And yeah, the Poulin site has been down for YEARS! And even thou there was some rumors on the webs that he might be coming back with new material such thing has not happened so far... So, better not hold u breath. In the meantime the vst4free that was already mentioned here is a legit source for the amps - and also for some other free plugins that have been discontinued. There are several other good free amps, but most have been mentioned here already. But here's a few more: -Ignite Amps also has a thing called ProFET, it might be a good alternative for Emissary fans. -Nembrini Audio has a Crunck amp, sort of 80's dry sounding. -Audiffex has AmpLion Free, it features a free Rectifier amp and the format is similar in style to Amped Roots: The paid version has 4 amps, but the free one has just 1 unlocked. I think this also works as a standalone, which is to your liking :)
In this shootout the Amped Roots sounded the best to my ears. The Ninja strikes me as something that would work well with a really super low tuned guitar for the more Djenty kinda stuff. Got some serious high end in there, however there are so many variables in the cab sim alone that can make or break a tone, not to mention the guitar you’re using. I recently downloaded a couple free IR’s from Frightbox Recording (Mesa w/57’s) and an IR set from Leon Todd (Marshall), both killer cab impulse sets but certainly have their individual applications and even found they even sound better when I use specific guitars with them, let alone the amp sim. However I still recommend the Nalex Amplex, you could literally do a stand-alone video on it given it’s a multi tone amp sim. Kinda like the axe fx concept I suppose. One UI with various amp tone options, really love the Barbarion (Engl Savage), Firecube (Engl Fireball) and the Uber (Bogner Ubershall) tones on it, but there’s heaps of others as well from Marshall, Peavey, Diezel, Friedman and Mesa. Lastly, it’s a free plugin. Give it a burl (if you haven’t already), and thank me later mate 😉 😁
I've never liked the Emissary. For me it was always too thin. It looks better than it sounds and here it sounded just box-y. For a solo it can work (and obviously with different IRs). Same for the Ninja. I think everything else from NaLex is better, but I might just haven't played enough with it. I don't like the Amped Roots either, but here it sounded huge. Very nice video! If you (or anyone else) are interested in Poulin stuff I have multiple versions of their/his units. Have a nice day!
Emissary is the plugin version made by the same team that built the real amp here in Italy. The plugin is probably close to 10 years old and still holds up!
I think I agree for tone, but in terms of functionality, with the standalone feature, I prefer the amped roots. If the Kuassa had a standalone, I'd probably use that primarily.
Hope you do another one...You certainly missed the nalex crunchman(friedman inspired) and amplex new one...There are also some Vadim taranov plugins that you can check out though most of the free ones are 32bit.
I mean in fairness, I could have made an entire video on just Nalex plugins. I knew they were out there, I just wanted to give a variety of different options. I'll definitely make a second video though.
@@TaylorDanley Hahaha nah not doing it in any demanding manner...To be honest I never even knew the difference in tone was that dramatic between the plugins...I just meant like if you ever wanna do some more free stuff...Would be awesome...👍🏾👍🏾
Great video. The low end plugin world (free) is slowly getting better and better. These plugins do sound good, and there are some good free IR files, but the Friedman Ownhammer $20 collection is well worth it. Watching this, I started wondering if it might be possible to make a poor man's HX Stomp using a Raspberry Pi and free software! But as always, it's the damn latency - that's where things like the real HX Stomp and similar products shine. Ironically, this is the same deal with the home arcade situation - I have a MAME cab that I built and loaded up with Galaga, Ms. Pac Man, all that jazz, and there's a small amount of latency when you press the fire button. Still... a Raspberry Pi based guitar pedal? Surely someone has already thought of this? Linux is free, there are free DAWs for Linux, these plugins are free... all one would need is a very inexpensive audio interface... and some way to reduce the latency. Hmm. And here I am, blabbing this idea on TH-cam, on a popular channel, like a dumbass. That's why I'm not rich. I'm thinking I had too much coffee this morning?
Wow, that's a crazy good idea. I definitely am not the guy for that, downloading some of these plugins and installing them pushed my technical capabilities hahaha... but I like where you are going with this!
