  • Singapore is set to acquire eight F-35A fighter jets. The fifth-generation aircraft are expected to be delivered in 2030, and will boost an advanced fleet that already has 12 F-35Bs in the pipeline. Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen said these jets will make the RSAF a capable air force and allow them to perform a full suite of missions. According to media reports, the latest price for an F-35A is about US$82.5 million. Lauren Ong reports.

If they want an aircraft carrier it might be better to have all F-35B or F-35C variants, the A is the regular variant designed for normal runways, the B is the STOVL version that can operate on short aircraft carriers, while the C variant is the full catapult-capable version that works on fullsize aircraft carriers.

Singapore has ordered heliopter carriers. Actually, it'd be cheaper to just put Apache or Cobra helicopters on them. F-35s can just fly from home bases to support a beach landing, which should be near, as we can't take the risk of transporting troops for faraway landings.

The ONLY reasons you beings sit comfortably behind your screens RANTING and CHIDING and BASHING at what our leaders do without the fear that our SKIES and LAND and SEA and the invisible DIGITAL SPACE get penetrated is because of our ARMED FORCES. ABSOLUTE SHAME AND DISGRACE.

Exactly. It's called network centric warfare. The F-35 has advanced datalink and other advanced sensors. It can share those information to other units (air, sea, land forces). For example, an F-35 locks on an aircraft, but if it's out of weapon, it can share that data and target lock to a Navy vessel; said vessel can fire a SAM to hit the aircraft.

Interesting that Singapore wanted the STOVL version of the F-35 in the first place. What's the reasoning behind that? I can understand the UK, Italy, and Japan wanting the Bs for their navies, but what about Singapore? Just so they can operate in austere areas? If that's the case, how do they expect to keep up the logistics chain for that? The B model is already more mechanically complex than the standard F-35A-that means it's going to need more maintenance and more parts.

The Chinese are reported to have developed a radar that could detect stealth fighters, such as the F-35. Whether true or not, countries will eventually have such a radar, and it won't be far off. When that hapoens, the hundreds of billions for the F-35 will be wasted.
Not only is the F-35 super expensive, it is, yes, very expensive to fly and maintain. The helmet for the pilot is stuffed with so many instruments, it is heavy. So, F-35 pilots (at least in the US) must be of a certain heavy weight so that when they eject in an emergency they have lower risk of whiplash from the heavy helmet.
I think the F-35 is overhyped and not worth the super high price tag and maintenance costs.

If more links are tied to US ..then Singapore will have to comply with the terms of US more ...maybe not be that prudent.
Maybe more naval boats are more practical to deal with sea pirates.
Time to have a new term who does not lean to Western powers that readily .
Singapore has to be on the side of history ...and hopefully Lawrence Wong will come out better...do not have a defence minister who could embarrass a big power for nothing ..
