    Thanks for a great game Alex, and for the special shoutout too. Expect to see a writeup from me too, in which everyone can read about all the ways that Alex cheated in that final game and how awful he is to play against (or... something ).
    Definitely do agree with the take on pre-selected scenarios. On the one hand, I do think this sort of event (a super-competitive one that's aimed at experienced players) is the best spot for them. But on the other, Alex's point about it being a little closer to pay-to-win is valid. I'll also add that it tends to reduce list diversity at the top, because all the other top players can also read the scenario pack and identify that it favours shooting (for example). I think a tournament tends to be more interesting the bigger a spread of lists there is around, and fixed scenarios detracts from that a bit.
    For me personally, I did a lot of soul-searching about whether I should be taking an Isengard gunline or (more realistically) AoL, because it suited the scenarios better than Pits or the Azog's Hunters list I was considering. The challenge was that I just don't really vibe with shooting armies, and I didn't want to play something that wasn't as fun for me personally, even if it potentially gave me a better chance to win the event. Very glad I made the call for Pits in the end, because I just had such a blast with it in every game. But in random scenarios or veto I wouldn't have had this dilemma, and wouldn't have felt like I was handicapping myself by taking the list I found fun (unless the list I found fun was Ruffians or the Fellowship or something). I'm sure lots of Angmar players had similar dilemmas, being torn between trying the cool new toys or using a list that doesn't melt to massed shooting.
    And finally, fixed scenarios brings with it the risk of the TO messing up and picking/rolling bad ones. I think the scenarios picked here were good scenarios, and aside from favouring shooting at the back end they were generally pretty balanced. But I've been to other events with scenarios or fixed pools that skewed heavily one way or another, and it totally skewed the optimal armies. Random scenarios you can still get that, but at least people aren't looking at a mission pack and going 'anything but the Vanquishers will probably lose here'. And even with these scenarios, there were like 5 armies total that didn't have a banner, because double banner scenarios is very rough for them. Hobbits or Goblin Town could have been interesting picks for the points level, but it just doesn't seem viable with both Supplies and To the Death in the pool. Any set of fixed scenarios will skew one way or another, and I think that just immediately rules out a bunch of lists that could have been interesting.
    Anyway, that's my 2c. Great recap and analysis, and congrats again on the win Alex!

      Thanks again for the game Sam! Loved hearing your thoughts on the game and the thoughts on how a players pack influences what players bring and why.
      Looking forward to another game in a slightly less skewed scenario!

    So stoked that you took corsairs! When you did the breakdown at the beginning I thought corsairs were perfect, so did you! Played corsairs at my first GT 2 weekends ago, took the Knight of Umbar to an undefeated (5-0-1) 2nd place finish. Loving corsairs as my second army. They have been a lot of fun, and I hope the Knight gets a little love in the next edition.

      Glad to hear we were on the same wavelength! Really happy I got to bring them out, and would love to see the Knight get some love for sure. The combo of sap will and smoke bombs is waiting for it!

      @@MtnGoatGaming yeah, smoke bombs are one of the coolest things in the game, but without a caster they are not nearly as useful.

      Massive agree. There aren't many situations where Dalamyr wants to charge the same hero for multiple turns in a row (and probably won't assuming the priority and move offs are roughly 50/50.

    6:00 open knowledge preset scenarios isn't a bad thing, especially for a highly competitive tournament. It takes away a chance of randomness of a scenario that may work against your list and favours the opponent's. In open preset participants have no excuse. They have to build the best list they can for the job of the entire tournament.
    Question is do you build for the first half of the tournament or the latter half? I would think a not so tactical player would tool his list for the first half in order to go deep into the tournament whereas a skillful player would tool his list for the latter half relying on his play to outdo the likelihood of meeting a lesser tactical opponent and rely more on his list skewed towards later scenarios to take on the more difficult opponents.

    • @MtnGoatGaming
      @MtnGoatGaming  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      That’s a really interesting take, would’ve never considered building for the early vs late rounds of a tournament, but I definitely see your point. Get through to the later rounds, and then have the list help you win vs the stronger opponents. It just so happened rounds 1-4 were definitely not as good for me as 5 and 6. Will have to keep in mind in the future!
