I think it's because he ran past his base with a damaged unit, so the priest followed the damaged unit trying to heal it. When the priest got attacked inside the undead base, Kael and his army went to help the priest.

That's basically the brunt of Illidan's characterization. Wanting to destroy evil, having an idea, not consider the side-effects and especially not tell anyone of what he's even doing.
Coatl are creatures of nightmares but nothing will compare when I attempted to attack the Undead base with 7 Chimaerae and saw a flood of Gargoyles. I lost them all in a matter of seconds.

I don’t think Maldfurion would accept it either way because if he destroys all of Northrend most likely it would flood Ashenvale entirely.
