To give you the inspiration you need for your travel itinerary, here’s what I did during my time at lake como, but first some useful tips about Lake Como!
Useful tips and information about Lake Como
- First, it is good to know that Lake Como is very large and that this should not be underestimated. The lake is formed in an inverted Y and the most visited places like Bellagio and Varenna are in the center of the lake.
- Visiting all the different places can be done by taking the ferry and for more distant places there is a hydrofoil, for example from the town of Como to Bellagio.
- Villa's
I will write down some of the villa's and the entre price.
Villa Carlotta 15,- euro's
Villa del Balbianello 23,- euro's
Villa Monastero 13,- euro's
Villa Melzi 8,- euro's
- If you booked a hotel with a swimming pool because you als wan't to relax during your stay at the lake, then keep in mind that the mainland surrounding the lake, consists of mountains. Therefore most towns on the eastern side of the lake are often located at the bottom of the hills like Varenna, Mandello and Lecco. Here the mountain provides shade most of the time during the morning and when the sun is high enough at noon the sun will come out. On the western side of the lake (towns such as Menaggio, Tremezzo, Lenno and Moltrasio), will have sun almost all day. It’s just something to think about if you want to take this into account during your stay.
- Scooter or boat rental.
If you want to see more of the lake and the surrounding villages, it is of course also possible to rent a scooter or to hear a boat for a few hours. One of the nicest things to do is to ride a typical Italian Vespa and drive along the beautiful towns of the lake. In Bellagio you will find the scooter rental company Bellagio Scooters for rent and in Menaggio you will find the rental company Lake Como Scooter Rent.
Do you want to go on the lake with a boat, you can do that and without a license! For more information visit the Bellagio Yacht Experience website
- Boat excursion. Would you rather enjoy a boat tour, the you can also choose for Bellagio Yacht Experience or Bellagio Water Limousines
- Hotel links. We stayed in Hotel Villa Marie, I believe that the price and quality ratio is very good about this hotel and the location is perfect. The facilities are good, the hotel offers a swimming pool with sunbeds, good parking facilities such as a parking garage and a nice breakfast. The walking distance to the ferry is 8 min and the hotel is located in the heart of Tremezzo.
If you have a little more money to spend and want to experience complete luxury then I would recommend you to stay at Grand Hotel Tremezzo. This is one of the most luxurious hotels at the lake and without a doubt the most beautiful hotel we have seen so far.
- Restaurants: I would recommend the following restaurants
Bellagio: Ristorante Suisse, Ristorante Alle Darsene di Loppia and Ristorante Bilacus.
Varenna bar Il Molo, Al Prato Restaurant and restaurant Du Lac.
Tremezzo Ristorante La Darsena and Ristorante La Terrazza Gualtiero Marchesi in Grand Hotel Tremezzo and La Cucina della Marianna located in Griante.

I completely agree. It is true that the lake and the associated villages have something magical and a beautiful and unique ambiance. The serenity that can be found here is almost unmatchable. If you visit Lake Como, don't forget that there are multiple beautiful places besides Varenna and Bellagio as well. Bellagio and Varenna are definitely one of my favorites, but can be very busy in high season. Choose your moments carefully or, if you have the chance, visit these villages outside the high season. Be sure to visit the village of Lenno, Tremezzo or the larger village of Mennagio. Walking along the boulevard and looking out over the lake is truly an unforgettable experience. I wish everyone a wonderful time here at the lake.

Beautiful video !! I've been to Lake Como a long long time ago !! Back in '83 ,I'd forgotten about it due to my horrible experiences in my life & PTS I was not aware of I had even. Nowadays I total remember it ,I had visited Florence as well & Wales ,U.K. .Which was scratched out off of my memories. I'd love to revisit Lake Como someday again !! Villa Balbianello has higher prices also because it's a famous Hollywood movie set. It's Naboo, from Star Wars episode II and the 007 villa in Casinò Royale.
Yes that might be also one of the reasons why Villa del Balbianello is a little more expensive. After visiting you will also notice that this is not just one of the most beautiful villa’s of the lake but this place in its entirety, together with the gardens and view points, is spectacular. Enjoy!

Yes, on average September is a good month to visit the lake. Just keep in mind that it is located between the mountains, so you always have a possibility of weather changes, but that is no different than in the summer months. Have a good trip!

Hi, thank you for your kind words. September is a good month to visit Lake Como. The large tourism crowds will decrease during this month. From October it can be a lot cooler. Lake Como is known for its fairly mild Mediterranean climate, but keep in mind that the weather here can be unpredictable as the lake is surrounded by high mountains. Hello . We are flying to Milan in August and straight from the airport planing to visit Lake Como for 2 nights . I have a hard time to pick main location between Como town , Bellagio or others . After 2 nights we will be going back the to Milan international airport. Any suggestions for a town to stay that is convenient transportation from the airport would be very helpful! Thank you . Hello, thank you so much. I would advice you to take the train from Milan station to Varenna (Esino). Of course it is possible to stay in Varenna, but it will be very crowded during the summer season, so I would recommend to stay on the side of Tremezzo, Caddenabia or Menaggio. Those towns are at the west side of the Lake. The ferry from Varenna can bring you to these towns. From the train station in Varenna it is a 5 minute walk to the ferry station. If you have more questions, please do not hesitate to ask. Have a wonderful time af Lake Como!
Tremezzo was perfect for us, easy quick travel to several towns and hotel was perfection

Hi, of course. I went in the first week of May. I initially planned my visit in the second week of May, but because the weather was very fluctuating in the month of May, we went one week earlier.
Generally, the month of May is a very good time to visit the lake as the temperature is around 20 degrees, but unfortunately the weather fluctuated this time in the month of May.

Hello Dave and Kim, thank you for asking. I can imagine your thoughts about the crowds during the summer months and the fact that you would like to enjoy your time at Lake Como the fullest, here is my advise.
Like you said the summer months are crowded, especially the towns of Bellagio and Varenna. Besides the crowds in July and August the weather can also be very hot and humit and because this area is surrounded by mountains and of course many lakes the huminity can resolve into extreme weather with hael and fluds. This year I have visit Lake Como for the first time in the month of May and wow this month is an excelent time to visit! The temperature was between 20 and 25 degrees or 70-77 Fahrenheit and less crowds!
I would visit Lake Como again just before or after the high season and I am talking about the period from mid-May to the first week of June or in the month of September and the first week of October.
I hope this information is useful and don't hesitate to ask more questions. I may not live in Italy, but I visit this region several times a year and our friends live nearby, which gives me a very good insight into this region.

I am Italian and I live near Lake Como. If I may, I suggest you visit this area in late spring or early autumn. These are the best months, little crowds and perfect weather. In the height of summer it is really too hot and full of people. This year the weather was beautiful until mid-October, with sunshine and temperatures up to almost 30 degrees centigrade. Autumn has only been here for a couple of weeks. If I had to give advice I would say May, June and September are the best months. I hope you can come and visit us soon and enjoy your stay to the fullest

If you have 4 to 5 full days, you will have enough time to visit Tremezzo, Lenno, Mennagio, Bellagio en Varenna. You can easily visit 2 places in 1 day, because all these places are connected by the ferry.

Kun je er ook goed met de auto komen? We rijden volgende week vanuit Nederland naar varrena . Moet je vooraf boeten voor de boot? Kan de auto op de boot?
Je kan zeker met de auto bij Varenna komen. Vanuit Nederland is dan de snelste weg om te rijden via Liechtenstein en dan rij je vervolgens langs de noord oost kant van het Comomeer naar beneden. Er varen ook veerboten waar je met de auto kan oversteken. Om bij Varenna te komen kan je met de auto de boot nemen vanaf Menaggio, voor tijden en tickets verwijs ik je naar de officiële website van de veerdienst: www.navigazionelaghi.it/en/. Alvast heel veel plezier! En ik hoor graag of je wat aan deze informatie gehad hebt 🌼

Denk dat we via luzern gaan, maar Lichtenstein is ook nog een optie. We gaan het ervaren 🙌🏻✨🙏🏻

Hi, no it is not necessary. We had our car with us because we drove from the Netherlands to Italy, but during our stay at Tremezzo we did not use our car. If you stay in the region from Lenno to Menaggio on the west side of the lake, then the well known towns like Bellagio and Varenna are reachable by ferry.

Almost hard to choose, because all of the towns have there own beautiful sights. One of my favorite is definitely Bellagio. This town is one of a kind, has amazing restaurants like ‘Suisse’, cobblestone streets and of course Villa Melzi D’Eril is stunning!
