The kids at Eton/Harrow called in “Assoc". When those kids graduated to Oxford and Cambridge, they added -er and it eventually became “Soccer.” Soccer actually precedes the term “football” by decades. The origins of the word happen to be incredibly British unbeknownst to actual British people.
