- Drummer Terry Bozzio is one of the highlights from our archive. We had to move to the big studio for the recording, because he had brought so much percussion and also wanted to use it. Bozzio is an enigmatic, evocative, and engaging musician whose instrument just happens to be the drums. He played with Frank Zappa, who wrote “the black page” for him, with UK, Jeff Beck, Thin Lizzy and The Missing Persons together with his wife Dale Bozzio.
We remember his solo performance as a unique, dynamic, melodic and orchestral event. Amazing how he could accompany himself on the drumset: Bass (drum) note patterns and at the same time a melodic solo on top. Terry Bozzio is a true storyteller on his set.

This drummer's unusual doublebass drum groove is most consistent.... coupled with his hand solo proves phenomenal independence of hands and feet. You don't see many drummers with this skill. Any drummer worth his salt would know that. Indeed major respects to him....and sad for all the trollers here. That's one for Terry Bozzia.
He’s a genius - Bozzio belongs in the company of the greatest composers and instrumentalists of this century and the last. Anyone arguing that point doesn’t know what she / he is talking about.

I had the privilege of seeing him perform live and up close and personal at a drum clinic doing his melodic drumming. . He is so good he is on other levels. I'll never forget that drum clinic.

Instead of playing the hi-hat left foot is on bass drum, that's how he gets that double bass groove. Ain't no thang but a chicken wing.

Terry Bozzio's approach to drumming and kit set-up seems to evolve in the direction of making the drum set a melodic instrument. One thing for certain he is one of the most innovative modern drummers I've listened to.

Most original musical drummer ever! I would know he taught me back in 1980 to 82,then went on tour with Terry and getting to watch and learnn so much! He's also the best teacher! Love his style and utter heart when he pounds his drums! !!!

JC,in 1983 i had a best friend and drummer who i told about Terry Bozzio's playing on Missing Person's Spring Session M album. He just scoffed at him and said it sounded more like an electronic drum kit. I disagreed and said that even if it was,he was still playing it and it sounded extraordinary to me. Fast forward to 1988 and him and i are in Hollywood CA picking up some new gear from guitar center and who do you see on giant posters plastered on the walls inside?...Terry Bozzio. I looked at my drummer and friend and said...'musta been one hell of an electric kit but it looks acoustic to me. I knew Terry Bozzio was special. I so envy your experience with him and happy for you being able to see it all.

This guy makes me realize that with all the years of playing and learning I’ve done. I’m still so inside the box with how I think about music. Even with all the jazz playing, metal, fusion, marching band. All that. There is still so much to learn and experience. And I’m 42 now.... damn I feel old

Wetton, Zappa and Jobson gave direction to Terry's need for percussive meandering...:) His work in both bands is extraordinary.
The Black Light Syndrome album absolutely blew my mind.. I knew all his fills by heart. Such a big influence on me.
Their second album, Situation Dangerous, is equally mind blowing.

Terry's never been afraid to be unconventional. He intentionally goes where no drummer has gone before. Terry is perfectly capable of doing a conventional monster drum solo...he absolutely has the chops, but he chooses to be unique. Good on him for taking the road less traveled!

I saw him doing this composition in 1998 in Gothenburg. I just hade started to listen to Zappa and when I saw that the ex Zappa drummer was going to play in Gothenburg I just had to take the train from Stockholm! The cymbal part here is what I think what really puts him in a league of his own. Too often drum solos is just a chopping matter. But Bozzio is turning the drumming to something completly different

I like how he has a melodic approach to the kit. That's one thing I like about this solo and something that I like a lot about Simon Phillips as well, they have themes or motifs in their solos. This solo had some parts that remind me kind of like Japanese taiko drumming in some parts. Wish I had that hand/foot independence.
