- The colour films (respectively from 1938 and 1939) are the property of Museum of Estonian Abroad (VEMU - Väliseesti Muuseum).
They were shot by an anonymous American film crew and distributed in the USA by Walter O. Gutlohn, Inc., 25 W. 45th St., New York City. There are some crude spelling mistakes (i.e."Tarter" instead of "Tartu", "Kradriorg" instead of "Kadriorg" etc), which gives evidence that these films were not either commissioned by Estonian authorities or made by Estonian studios.
The parts of Tallinn and Tartu that are shown, are mostly well preserved. The notable exceptions are the Oru Castle (residence of the Estonian President) and the historical Stone Bridge in Tartu, both destroyed by the retreating Red Army in August, 1941, and never restored. Some buildings (such as the Estonia National Theatre, St. Nicholas Church and others) were destroyed in the Soviet air raids in 1944 and rebuilt after the war. Narva, a beautiful baroque gem next to the Russian border, however, was completely levelled by the Soviet Army in 1944 and has never been restored to its former glory.
The main value of these films is in the fact that they are not propaganda pieces - not how WE wanted to show our country, but how OTHERS saw our country. - เพลง
It was a great honour to have had the privilege to find this film in a basement in Toronto, to restore it at the Library and Archives in Ottawa and pay for the digitization of it. I’m surprised to see it here under the name of Mart Sander!

@ultonian63 Well, although the interwar period of 20 years independence brought a lot of economic growth - mainly because of land reforms creating an agricultural boost which formed the prosperity of Estonia, the replacement of the Czarist Ruble and the establishment of the Estonian Mark in 1918, later the Kroon in 1929 and the trade focus on Western Europe, mainly Great Britain, Germany etc -, it was also a short period of polarization, in both a political and a social level. With this I mean a few events that occurred in a minor time: The in 1924 failed Estonian communist coup d'état attempt, the Wall Street Crash of 1929 and the directly following Great Depression, Konstantin Päts's self-coup in 1934, turning Estonia into a
dictatorship only worsening the situation in the young republic of pre-war Estonia.
Nevertheless, I like seeing the modernization of the Estonian capital of Tallinn, back then in the late thirties of the twentieth century, taking an example of the quite modern West European cities of that time. @@FreekZoontjes Thanks for sharing your knowledge about the interwar period. My father escaped Tallinn and Estonia in '41 and I'm very interested in this period he grew up in before coming to Sweden. Can you recommend any further reading on this topic? First choice is online, books second choice. I'm in the US.

@@nickcarroll5034 No. He was actually one of the very few who escaped when the German occupiers started to conscript all the young men. Most people fled during the Russian occupation. As a Baltic German, I'm sure he preferred the Germans over the Russians, but had no interest in become canon fodder, and possibly fight other Estonians forced to fight for the Russians. He was on tour playing piano in a Jazzband at the time, and had to hide in the countryside for months before he could get to the coast where a small boat shipping coal took him to Finland, and then Sweden. He never saw his family again...There is a great Estonian movie called 1944 dealing with the topic.

Our Mom was born in Estonia raised in a childrens home, and she left when she reaised the red army was coming (smart!) How utterly sad what they did to this beautiful little country! its so advanced even back then! Perfect mi of old and new. Everyone here looks so peacful and happy! No wonder she missed he homeland!

Still, even without the music, us Estonians have all heard stories of the “good old time”
It must have truly been a time of great advance and economic prosperity, that most Estonians remember the time as so great. Of course nostalgia plays a part, but still, there is such an overwhelming ammount of people and stories. Even from those who worked simple jobs and lived in simple appartments, they remember that they managed to get out and party a lot, sport was in high honour, education made large strides, buildings were built with record speeds, and many still stand with great quality. National pride in their works and activities must have been a great motivator in creating a good society for all.
And we see something similar today, even if there are problems, the advances made after the end of soviet occupation are gigantic. People are happy to advance the economy, culture and social life of their own nation, and are happy to work for a better tomorrow for themselves and the nation.

Corrupted by USA, yes; corrupted by Russia, no. If it was vice-versa it would be even worse because Russia has a few problems that us, Estonians, dislike more than USA. Either way those in power tend to do stupid things so it doesn't matter whether it's USA, Russia, China or any other country - human nature (to which we attribute a lot of the mistakes we make in an ever so ignorant manner) tends to do foolish things once given enough power over others.
It's a little sad that many people mitigate their potential by bickering over trivial matters thinking that it's important. Backstabbing is rampant; nowadays it's just a little more subtle. At least there's hope but ever so slight and this makes me a little sad. So we either blow ourselves up or stop believing in the illusions that we create (newsflash - life's an illusion and it's what we put in there that makes it) - I predict the former if we carry on at this rate.

I watched it and the beach scenes were in striking contrast of those we could see on the Germans in the Thirties.
I never seen so many well built people, that it reminded me ibn Fadlan description of vikings: "I have never seen more perfect physiques than theirs-they are like palm trees, are fair and reddish, and do not wear the qurçtaq or the caftan. The man wears a cloak with which he covers one half of his body, leaving one of his arms uncovered."
Interesting fact: Estonians were the last vikings of Europe. Also Estonia hasnt had real freedom before 1918 and after 1227 were the Vikings of Estonia were defeated by Danes, Swedes and Germans. All we have had since then was occupation between many nations, one year denmark controlled a part of Estonia, in another day there were swedes, then polish, then back to the danes, then to russia, then sweden again, then germany etc (not irl order). In 1918 Estonia declared independence and won a war against german landeswere and russian red army 1918-1920. We had 20 years of peace until our "Saviour" Konstantin Päts allowed russian military to make bases in Estonia, next year Estonia was annexed and the worst time Estonia had to go through started, tens of thousands were killed because they were Estonians.

+AlCarou , not a cheap business... I hope some day it can be scanned anew with correct aspect ratio and the colors can be improved quite a bit. Or, alternatively, the copy is already a bit tarnished.
Why to crop historical footage to 16:9? It is obvious that much of the picture is missing, no-one with camera makes so ugly compositions..
