  • This time I check out Jeweller Pablo Cimadevila and his video of the most valuable ring he's ever made.
It was difficult to fully understand because the video showed a few misleading scenes and there was some major work for the ring not shown at all.
Confusing but I think I figured it out by the end.
You learned something from this video?? Why not support the channel and help me share more of what I've learned from over 2 decades being a professional jeweller by becoming a patron or member.

Love these videos. He’s obviously punching up people. I’m a bench jeweler, and we all know and understand that these people he does these videos about are incredible, talented jewelers. Some of the best out industry have to offer. He spends a lot of time praising the people he critiques.
He’s simply going over some of the things that a professional jeweler would notice when watching these videos. Pablo is more talented than I’ll ever be, but there are certain small, nit-picky things that you notice when watching these videos when you know what’s actually going on. I know to the common person these may come across as “mean,” or “critical,” but he is just offering a different perspective, the perspective of the fellow professional jeweler, which is completely different from the common person’s. I guarantee you that Pablo is far more critical of his own work than any other person could possibly be.
A lot of this is actually just him honestly reacting to the way that the jeweler is going about doing things. No two jewelers do almost anything alike, unless they were taught by the same person. No two people size a ring the same way, no two people make a ring the same way. So because of this, it’s always fascinating to see another jeweler work, and you are often surprised by their techniques, and sometimes you may see their techniques as unnecessary. It doesn’t mean that they’re wrong, it’s just how they do things. Until the internet, jewelers were incredibly secretive and you never knew how they did things, so with the internet, you’re seeing a lot of things for the very first time, which is sometimes surprising, and often times very exciting. He’s simply reacting in that capacity. I think it’s awesome, but that’s because I’m also a jeweler. I can see where this would come across as harsh if I didn’t understand what was going on.
These are quickly becoming some of my favorite videos on TH-cam. Great work!

I think the magic skill is a laser welder, most professional jewellers use these to tack parts in position before soldering, the solder is added as prongs welded in place as you know can be a bit brittle

I'v been in repair for nearly 10 years now, as im recently trying to branch out into creating handmade pieces I find myself coming to see what the jewelers of youtube are up to. You sir are head and shoulders above the lot with your insight and honest video editing. These review videos are a very cool way to dissect the creating process. I would love to see what you think of the channle Scaffoal.
keep up the great work, love these review videos!
to anyone thinking this is "rude" or "mean"... it is just simple critiquing from one professional to another, very common place in any professional field.

    • @miekemanders6598
      @miekemanders6598 ปีที่แล้ว

I am not a professional but I think looking at Scaffoal is very différent from this man. What I saw from Scaffoal I understood, I mean he shows everything clearly. No guessing.. Just pure skills that man has. Unbelievable.
      Very skilfull man Scaffoal.
This man (Pablo) you can't always understand. I think he does'nt want to be understood. I have the feeling that this artistic way of filming, his beautifull face and the close ups are as important as showing how he works.. I think.
But it is beautifull to see 🍀

Alot of creation type videos are made like this. Some mellow music and then really great edited videos. Bobby White does the same. I think alot of people just find it mesmerising. You have to remember, 99.9% of people aren't jewellers and don't really care what specific things he's doing. It's the type of random video that could be on your TH-cam or Facebook shorts, and the person watching has never even thought or considered what goes into making jewellery, yet thinks to themselves wow, that was amazing, to start from nothing and end up with an incredible piece of handmade jewellery.

  • @andybside

I think he laser welded the halo on so that he wasn’t Pavé setting into a solder seam (which would be weaker and softer when you’re drilling & burring). Additionally, he soldered the shank on before the halo, so you wouldn’t want to solder the halo on to create a vacuum in between the two domed forms and maybe trap acid or moisture in that void. Finally, laser welding there will ensure a perfect color match in the metals where solder might show a slightly visible seam, but the other two reasons are more important, imo.

I think you are absolutely right, he made two of those cups, the outside so that he could pave with the diamonds. He just didn't show us, because of course he doesn't want to show all his secrets. As far as the laser welding is concerned, could it be because a solder might possibly be less durable than a weld, once it gets inlaid with the diamonds? Just speculating.

    Hello there my friend,
    Congratulations for your channel!!
I’m from Greece ,Excuse me, my English is a little bit rusty.
I’m also Diamond Mounter , worked in Graff Diamonds in London etc…!
I think with my experience that Pablo is one of the best jewellers …
So 9:55 he point the claws to the bezel with his laser welder so it straight and nice and then he solder it , easy and secure…
I’m almost 20 years in the job and I use laser from the first day, it makes your life so easy if you have to make a handmade with a lot of soldering….because every time you solder you are sure that this is gonna stay in position …
Also he laser the yellow basket with the white basket
    This , I don’t know why with laser ??
( There you have right )
But imagine the yellow with the white together to be 20 Diziem or 22 something like that , an then he solder in top the white bezel with the claws and hide totally the white gold part (basket) and little from the yellow …
Probably this white bezel is around 16-18 diziem and the stones are 14mm ? Something like that …
THATS WHY he has a little STEP between white and yellow …
Those parts are in different levels…..
Also you are right about the 2 square holes ,
I think also, it was unnecessary, he could easily solder the shank straight to the basket..
I hope I was somehow understandable..
    Thanks 😊

The technique Pablo used to form the underpinning for the diamond is repouse’. He created an exact form with the wood so all he had to do was press the gold into it. I’ve always loved his videos, and found them creative and inspiring. They’re not intended to teach jewelry making.

I think its like alot of diy or recipes or anything that they purposely don't show or tell you exactly how. They leave certain steps out so when you do it it won't be the same..the point is to show enough to intrigue you so you watch or sign up or buy. But looks like the stone fit almost flushed and when he added the layered plate it added height to it so it shows more.

Maybe you should show some of your work so that other jewellers are allowed to critique and comment upon it, I do not think you are qualified to even comment on the jewellers you are critiquing when in your early video's you admit you don't set stones yourself. The jewellers you are criticising are brilliant craftsmen with great client portfolios behind them, so come on show us your work, and please no first year apprentice snowflakes, if you are a tenth as good as Pablo or Bobby, they will be very interesting video's.
Just for the record I have over 50 years bench experience making hand made jewellery, I also wonder if you have a copyright agreement to use other people's videos to make a video of your own.
The video's you are commenting on are not there to teach people how to make the item, they are there to inspire as to what can be achieved with hard work and dedication over many ,many, years of commitment to the art of jewellery making.

That lip he made was to raise the diamond off the under bezel. The diamond would still fit flush in the cup of the underbezel. As far as for laser welding it on I'm sure it was just easier than trying to polish fire scale out of the cup. Donno pretty straight forward construction really...

Huge thumbs up on this, YOUR video. Thanks for doing these, it's super helpful for understanding. It's also great to not be the only one who has no freaking idea what he's doing.....what is the point of Pablo making these fairly detailed videos? Oh wait, (duh...), to sell his amazing work, NOT to show technique to other makers....What a way to instill inferiority complexes in students of jewelry making!!! Lol! Good job Chris! Oh, and of course, could have just made a wax, he's got every fabrication tool known to this solar system - all too if the line - which is fabulous! Oh, and if you look close you can see that he laser welded/tacked thr prongs on, then soldered. Look at the back when he quenches. Good use of the laser welder.
