Death sentence? While Jaws invented the concept of the summer blockbuster, a ton of popular movies before it were released in the summer, including Bambi, Snow White, Mary Poppins, The Exorcist, American Graffiti, Psycho, Casablanca, Blazing Saddles, Psycho, bla bla bla. In the backstory of Chief Brody, he was shot back in NYC, which is why he moved to Amity Island. This is the wound he's contemplating showing the others onboard the boat during their drunken pissing contest. Spielberg chose Roy Scheider as Brody because he had just played a leading cop in "The French Connection". The cinema audience could identify his portrait that way.

That may have been his backstory in the book, but the book characters are not the movie characters. That is, these are two separate sets of characters. No, the scar Movie Brody is looking at is an appendix removal scar.
"Spielberg chose Roy Scheider as Brody because..."
Not true. According to Scheider, he and Spielberg were at a party together one night and Spielberg was explaining this "Jaws" project he was doing, but he couldn't quite cast the leading Brody part. Scheider looked incredulously at him then asked, "What's wrong with me??" And Spielberg gave him the part right there.

I’ll die on this mountain: Jaws is the greatest movie ever made. Everything about it is perfect. The musical arrangements fits perfectly. The dialogue between the three on the boat is just pure chemistry. The one liners are still quoted 50+ years later. And the fact that you’re terrified without ever seeing the shark until the third act of the movie (minus a brief glimpse before the third act) is just a testament to Spielberg’s craft. He truly is a master at suspense. Everything about this film is just perfect.
I don’t care what anyone says, the sequel was also incredible, albei, no where near as good as the first. But just great in its own ways. 3 and 4 are more nostalgic for me. I grew up obsessed with all 4 movies. I can still do 3. But I watched The Revenge recently, and my god. I can quote it front to back and I’m ashamed of it. 😂

The performances are excellent, especially by the three leads, the direction is amazing, the writing is incredible, the score is fantastic… this is one of the most perfect movies ever made honestly. Shame Scheider, Shaw and Spielberg weren’t nominated for Oscars for this film. I’ve been fortunate enough to see this film on the big screen on a few occasions and each time I’ve seen it, it’s been truly amazing. I also love sharks and loved them ever since I was a kid. There are three scenes that stand out to me, as probably being THE best in cinema. First of which being the moment where Quint notices his line starting to twitch. He doesn't make a huge scene, doesn't start shouting. Just slowly starts prepping his gear, and settling in for what is surely about to be the fight of his life. The look in his eyes is telling the tale. It builds tension perfectly.
The other, was his monologue about the sinking of the USS Indianapolis. The way he tells it, like he was living it all over again. It never fails to send chills down my spine.
And finally, the moment where Hooper gets sent down in the cage. And there is absolutely no music playing. All you hear is the sound of the ocean, the creaking of the boat over his head as he gets his bearings. Until he sees the shark in the distance, and the music is so quiet at first. Then you slowly see the shark morphing out of the darkness, and Hooper gets his first sight of just how large the shark really is. And the music hits it's crescendo just as it's passing the cage. Until finally, it disappears into the murk. And all is quiet again. Spielberg is an AMAZING director.

I'm German, so we don't have much to do with sharks and especially not cars like this. When we sat in the theater in 1975 and saw the scene with the story about the USS Indianapolis, a falling feather would have sounded like a bell. You couldn't even hear anyone breathing, it was literally "dead style".
Analyzes of this case revealed that only the smallest proportion of deaths were attributed to sharks. Suicide, sunstroke, dehydration, intentional or unintentional consumption of sea water, maximum physical exhaustion, loss of will to live, among others, were the main reasons. Still, I can't imagine what it's like to be in such a situation for days. It exceeds everything imaginable by a factor of x. It's not just about the money for Quint. If you are going to do "The Man with No Name" trilogy, it is probably best to start off with the very movie that inspired it all - Akira Kurosawa's "Yojimbo" (1961), with Toshiro Mifune as the samurai with no name, and which Sergio Leone remade (without Kurosawa's permission) as "A Fistful of Dollars". It would make for a good compare and contrast!

    • @georgeguzman5973

As a matter of fact, Kurosawa sued Leone and won. "A Fistfull of Dollars" was allowed to play in theaters with Kurosawa getting a certain percentage of the gross earnings. But yes, "Yojimbo" & "A Fisttull of Dollars" should be shown back to back, which would make for an interesting comparing & contrasting!

Jaws just happens to be my GOAT, and I was the same way, as anytime it was on any channel at anytime, I would stop and watch it. I only ever saw it once as a kid in theaters for a re-release which was the norm back then(late 70's), as TV was the only other option to see a film before VCR's became a thing. Back in 2017 they had a showing for some reason, so I finally got to watch it as an adult in theaters, and even though I have long since lost track of how many times I have seen this, it never gets old. A true masterpiece for the ages.

Most of the crew died from exposure and wounds. He also got the date wrong as he said June 29th 1945 but the sinking of the Indianapolis took place July 30th 1945. They recently found her wreck in 18,000 feet of water.

The USS Indianapolis {CA-35} was a heavy cruiser. After delivering Uranium and "Special Ordnance" components to Tinian Naval Base, to be used to assemble the Little Boy atomic bomb destined for Hiroshima, they set out for The Philippines on training duty.
Just after midnight on 30 July, a Japanese submarine torpedoed the ship and it sank in around 12 minutes. 1195 crewmen were onboard. Approx 300 went down with the ship. A PV-1 Venture spotted survivors four days later while on routine patrol. Rescue operations began, and 316 survivors were recovered.

One of the best movie lines ever "Smile, you sonnava-" BOOM. Also, the sound played when the dead shark is sinking is the same sound that was played in Duel when the truck is crashing. Speilberg has said that it was his homage to Duel for starting his career. Speaking of, that would be a good movie to react to.

    • @ConstantineFurman
      @ConstantineFurman หลายเดือนก่อน

He did say "Smile, you son of a bitch" entirely in the original mono sound mix. Spielberg removed the "bitch" when he made the stereo remix in the late 90s (which is what they were listening to here). When they get to "Jaws: The Revenge", you'll clearly hear the line in its entirety when Mrs. Brody thinks back to him telling her the story of killing the shark (she is NOT flashing back to events she was not at).

In the novel on which this movie is based, Amity Island is ran behind the scenes by the Mafia and they expect the tourism dollars in that "fk you pay me" kind of way... so the mayor is under pressure to keep the beaches open... the mayor was as much a pawn as Brody is. To simplify the plot they made the socially myopic mayor the villain.

While I’ve seen it in theater rereleases, special edition versions, and so many times on tv, my favorite way I saw it was as a “Dive-In Movie” at the Beaverton, Oregon HMT Aquatic Center.
Imagine an entire 25x50 meter olympic size indoor pool with 18 ft deep end for competitive diving, red lenses on the underwater lights to simulate blood in the water, and all the participants floating on tubes and rafts like Alex Kittner.
Of course, while I was treading water and people were asking why I didn’t grab a float, you know what I had to say:
“I’ll never wear a lifejacket again!”

Remarkably, Quint’s speech about the sinking of the USS Indianapolis is a historical fact. It really happened! His vivid description of the tragedy that resulted is one of the most epic monologues in cinematic history, and is the key to his character and his obsession with killing sharks. He smashed the radio not only because he wanted to secure the bounty and reward for killing the Great White, which is strictly a secondary consideration for him, but rather because he wanted revenge - or perhaps personal redemption - for his horrific experience, which he can only achieve by killing the man-eating shark himself.
