These songs are my very earliest memories of music. My mother getting dressed to have friends over for dinner.. these records playing in the background. One song that really speaks to me lately is The Border Song. It’s on his first greatest hits album - although it’s not a song that gets much attention anymore - but it really should because it’s more relevant than ever. Saw Elton at Dodger Stadium in LA this past November on his Goodbye Yellow Brick Road tour. It was his last ever weekend performing in the USA. Amazing concert! Definitely a bucket list item to see him live and so glad we did.
HARMONY was my favorite song off this album.
Nigel Olsson is the best minimalist drummer ever. Nothing flashy or fancy, but if you listen it fits the song perfect. Every fn time!!

Bernie Taupin writes incredible lyrics. And he’s not even in the band. How Elton puts music to those words is the genius with those great musicians playing those songs. The production from Gus Dudgeon is a masterpiece.

The band (Nigel, Dee, Davey) created the parts of the songs for their own instruments (with no input from anyone, including Elton), and wrote and created the backing vocals. Bernie doesn't get enough credit, but the band more or less gets none, which is a shame.
Every song on that album is a banger... His finest hour.

Elton John sang the soundtrack for my life. Only The Who came close to doing the same, but I grew out of them. Elton grew with me.
Every song on this album is excellent. There were some very seedy topics in the lyrics of some, way before their time!
There's a documentary about making this album. Elton often left the backing vocals to Dee bassist, Davey guitarist and Nigel drummee to arrange and record.
Levon is another good one to listen to. There are so many hits. You will find Elton is a very versatile singer.
Jerry Cantrel from "Alice in Chains" said he was his #1 Influence was Elton John. That and being in the choir in High School singing Gregorian chants.. You can really hear both influences in songs like Angry Chair or I Stay Away SO Elton John..

This and Bernie and The Jets are tied for the best Elton songs in my opinion.
This whole “monster” album was a staple of the Classic Era. Multiple radio friendly hits rolled off this one. As two reactioners who appreciate well engineered albums, if you listen to the entire LP, you’ll agree this was one of the best for it’s time. 👈😎

Great song and I'm an old guy who has loved that song for 40 years.
My step father was a lead guitarist in a country western band. We listened to both kinds of music in our house...COUNTY and WESTERN. I was maybe 8 years old when I heard Don McClean's American Pie and I was 10 years old when I first heard Elton sing Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. Those were the first hints I got that there might be some other kind of music out there than what was played in our house.

Elton John was my favorite growing up in the 70's
Elton's band during his period between Honky Chateau and Captain Fantastic were superb musicians that also provided examplary backing vocals
"Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" is Sir Elton's best work, IMVHO. Every song he and Bernie Taupin wrote is excellent, and his band is in unparalled territory.
Elton's regular bandmates at the time (Dee Murray - bass, Nigel Olsson - drums, Davey Johnstone - guitar) pretty much all sang background vocals, and they all had great voices.
One of the best concerts I ever attended. He was such an entertainer too. Great fun! Ahhh...to be young again. ❤

Huge hit and a killer, rocker of a song, has been on classic rock radio forever, always in rotation. They will listen to this album when travelling through the stars!
So...many years ago I was having a crisis in my life that I won't of course go into here, but it was of such profundity that most people probably would have cried at least once within the first two days after it happened. It took me five or so, lol, and it was listening to THIS song that cracked the ice for me, and a-sobbing I went! Special place in my heart ever since then, heh. Thanks, Elton! Glad you guys appreciate this brilliant, powerful piece as well!

The dynamic duo of Sir Elton John and Bernie Taupin. Masters! I was only 1 when this came out ,but definitely one of my faves.
This is a top 5 album for me. This album is so great. You’d enjoy a side at a time review through the rest of the album.

Somebody Saved My Life Tonight. It gets overlooked sometimes. Elton said in a recent concert that I was at, “Somebody Saved my Life is me favorite song that I have written.”
Great example of Elton's soulfulness/funk is "Amorena" from Tumbleweed Connection album. That whole album is epic. Also, "Take Me to the Pilot" from "17-11-1970" album is soulful AF.
Border Song is another one that pops into my head.
The band with Eltons music, and Bernies lyrics, painted incredible pictures. The three guys in his band, would layer the backing vocals, after the basic tracks were done. Elton would let them decide on how to do it, and they were incredible. Such talent

BROS, I was very fortunate to see Elton "live" in the St. Paul Civic Center. His concert was one of the most memorable times of my life. Friends I'd made there and I rushed to the front of the stage.
In an interview Elton was asked how long does it take him to compose the music for one of his songs, and he replied "oh sumthin around 10 or so minutes". As a very young boy Elton was admitted to London's Royal Academy of Music to study piano. ( Comparable to the Juilliard School of Music).

If anyone's interested, the Marc Maron WTF podcast just released an episode where he interviewed Bernie Taupin. I really enjoyed it. After all these years, this was the first time I had ever heard his voice. Obviously he talked a lot about his life with Elton, but there were other topics discussed as well. Definitely worth a listen!
The lyrics and their emotional delivery in much of Elton's music are every bit as important as the music.
The combination of lyrics, delivery and musicianship are simply fantastic.

It's cool that you picked up on the band. That goes by a lot of people. They were a huge part of his sound and integral to coming up with arrangements for EJ and BT's compositions. Very talented musicians. Elton would leave the three of them to do all the backing vocals after the main tracks were recorded.
The arrangements on this and other songs on the album are killer. Arrangements are an often overlooked commodity when critiquing songs. Yet they play such an important role jn how we digest them.

Great album, great song, great reaction! Like most, if not all, EJ songs this was written by Bernie Taupin. The song is actually about BT wanting give up the crazy life he and EJ were living at the time. He was longing for the simplicity of a rural life and was more comfortable with life on the DL.
Great reaction to not only a first rate pop gem of a single, but to a masterwork of an album. The breadth of topics explored lyrically and musically make this one an all-time favorite of mine. Much credit must be given to Elton and the band, but also to Gus Dudgeon, who produced nearly all of Elton’s 70s albums.
