We typically bisque to Cone 04 and fire to Cone 5-6

I love doing this technique. However, I prefer to bisque first, and use black glaze. I worry about deforming my works in the greenware state. Great video, great share!
Hi Kevin. I havent tried it with the glaze like that. I have tried underglaze in the bisque state, but sometimes I get stubborn areas that have soaked into the clay and I just cant seem to get the clay clean enough. If the piece of pottery is leather hard, you wont deform it....that said, pottery is always at risk of deforming when fired. That is true with all of it no matter what you do to it to decorate it, haha. But once the piece is leather hard, you dont. have to worry about the decorating technique deforming the piece. :-) Thanks so much for watching and I always like to get other potter's tips and tricks.

I was wondering-the coloring technique seems like it would work just as well on bisque, and then you wouldn’t have to be so careful when wiping back the underglaze. What made you decide to do it on greenware? What’s the advantage over doing it on bisqueware?
Hey Ali. I thought about doing the coloring on bisque, but I can never seem to get the bisque as clean as I like. It always seems that there is some underglaze that soaks into the thirsty bisqued clay that I just cant get sponged off.. You can also do a cuerda seca technique where you wax the entire greenware piece. then carve the design through the wax, then underglaze and wipe it down. But once the wax is on the clay, you really have to be precised in your carvings. There is no room for mistakes at that point. With this method, I can still go back and scrape off mistakes, redraw lines, etc. It is just what I prefer. Im sure everyone would have their favorites.

@@alilaforce7233 Im sure there are a lot more ways to go with this. With the second piece with the secondary design, it would be a fun experiment to have donthe rainbow underglaze and not wipe it back.. then bisque fire the colors onto the vase. Then brush black underglaze over the whole thing. then wipe it back so the black is in the grooves and the rainbow colors are left on the bare spots. That might be really cool....if you could get all the black underglaze off the clay so it leaves a clean enough surface. That would be the challenge.

Hi Shirley. Great reminder. Actually I wasnt wearing a mask. The clay was not bone dry but leather hard. ...it dried a little more than what I had hoped while waiting for us to do the videotaping so the other ones that I carved were more on the damper leather hard, but the clay on the one I carved the video was still damp. I carved it and swiped the crumbs onto my apron then I went outside and dumped the crumbs outside. I did have a teacher once who said when he carved, he would carve right over a bucket of water so the crumbs would go right in there as he went. ...... I do give tips in the video for carving while trying not to get the dust airborne. Thanks for the reminder 🙂

The design of the multicolor vase is gorgeous. I love how the rainbow of the carved lines is subtle, but it still pops against the black background.

My favorite thing right now is carving into clay so Challenge Accepted! Can't wait to try this! These are beautiful and unique. I would call the filling in the shapes with carving "zen doodling" which I've been wanting to try on pottery so this is very timely for me to see. Thanks Ann!

Hi KCM. I could have done a cuerda seca technique and used the wax, but I find that I need to be much more careful not to make mistakes when I cover the clay in wax. You have to make more diliberate carvings etc... I am not that talented. This way, I can go back and clean up, fix mistakes, make changes, and make areas darker if I need to. To me, this may take a little more time, but it is much more flexible and forgiving. Just my experience. Good thinking though.
Agreed wax then carve would be easier... I've done both

@annruel1982 that's the wonderful thing about everyone having different experiences and preferences. I use cuerda seca (thank you for the technique name) to do faux calligraphy in the clay, I find I get a better depth of colour if I want the engraved look. Or I slip trail with a super fine tip. And the wipe back for me is cleaner especially when I combine quotes and illustrations.
