Milky Way Editing & Blending

- In this video I'll take another look at my milky way editing and blending technique. This is the last of my current series on post processing and I've found the response to be very encouraging from you all. Milky way editing can be very subjective and we all have our own methods. My technique of blending foreground light painted images with milky way backgrounds has been developed over many years of trial and error to come up with the sharpest and most vibrant images. I hope you like it.
In this video we do milky way stacking using Sequator, blending and Star Reduction using Photoshop and final image in Lightroom.

Thank you so much for this video Richard. Last winter I went up to the Artic and photographed the Northern Lights which drew me into trying to photograph the night sky, but in the UK clear skies are somewhat rare. While waiting for a starry night, I have been watching many TH-cam tutorials and your Milky Way Editing & Blending is outstanding.
I really appreciate you watching Ron, glad it was helpful.
You are my photography hero! Thank you so much Richard - your videos are GOLD

A great finale to your post editing series. I learned a new Australian term today, "...looks like a dog's breakfast" I had to stop the video because I was laughing so hard.
One of the many highlights of your videos is your enthusiasm. I have caught myself giggling out loud in the middle of nowhere while light painting. It's just so much fun.
Thanks again Richard!
Haha, well I'm glad you like the Aussie terminology Tim. Really appreciate you watching the channel.

Haha, thanks so much for watching and your great comments Bryan. I certainly do appreciate your wonderful support.
I watched this for a second (third?) time and took some notes. Now I am ready to tackle an image (or several layers of one) I took a couple weeks ago, using your technique. If I can pull it off, I will be so excited. Fingers crossed!
Good on you Andrea. I hope it goes well.

Thanks so much James, means a lot.
Thanks for all the great content Richard...keep answering those questions. I have taken star scapes, but not multiple images and stacking or star trails. I have both in my list and now that you've shown how i have nothing left to it but to do it. I'm in the US in Texas (howdy Darrell) and this time of year I'll be trying star trail. It would be a dream trip to head over your way and do one of your workshops. thanks again! russell
You would always be welcome Russell. Thanks very much for watching the channel and for the comments. Really appreciated.
Such an inspiration Richard , It makes me want to get out tonight under the UK stars
Thank you for the tutorial, think I would be lost without them .
I'm yet to test my new F2.8 lens to capture the milky way but very soon will be.

Thanks so much Brad, I also really enjoy your comments and appreciate your support.
Great finale to a super series Richard. I'm really looking forward to your Q&A vlog but won't add to the list as I've asked about light painting already. Judging by the number of questions posted you'll be doing well to get through them all - could even become a two-parter!
Many congratulations on your richly deserved success 😀👍.
Really appreciate your kind words Paul. Thanks so much for watching.
Hey Richard, another great tutorial. Like you have said many times, it does pay to go over the process more than once. Each time I watch an episode, something finally clicks into place. Also, you shouldn't be to surprised at your success on you tube and with the workshops. People want to learn from the best and right now that would be you. Keep up the great work.
Really kind words Garth. I appreciate your support and for watching the channel.

Richard your tutorials are way too simple and easy to follow. Totally love the final result 🙂
Well I'm very pleased you like them Talha, thanks so much for taking the time to comment.
Hint for Mac users at about 9:20, for Mac, there is Starry Landscape Stacker (available in App Store), which works pretty much equal as Sequator (hope I wrote it correct) does. I suggest to make 3 dark images with the lens cap on and same exposure settings as for , they are intended to detect hot pixels of sensor and remove them automatically.
Very good advice there Roland, thanks.
Thank you so much for your videos. By using them I was able to realise my aims of recording the Milky Way and a foreground in my images, and your teaching techniques are faultless. Australia's a long way from the UK but if I find myself your way again in the future I will certainly put myself on one of your workshops.
Thanks a lot for watching Kevin, really appreciate that.
Awesome video. many thanks from California.

Amazing picture again. 😍
Thanks heaps for watching my friend.
Fantastic series Richard. Thanks for your commitment on doing them. I love the enthusiam you put across when developing the images, great job!
Really appreciate your great support Josep
This could be abit long winded as l could rattle on abit lol! But this video deserves so much praise it is one that covers everything and certainly one l have saved. What a wonderful image, the drama you pulled from the sky to the perfect foreground blending what can l say but fantastic!! I love your video's especially when l can't be out there myself but these help keep my mind from forgetting the steps until l return. Fantastic series, can't recommend your video's enough.. well done!
Beautiful comments Leigh and I know your heart is to be out there under the stars. Really appreciate your support and encouragement ...!!!
Indeed, awesome!!! and thank you so very much for sharing!!!
I'm really pleased you like it.
@@nightscapeimages.richard Love all your infos and I have been sharing at my FB :).... once again, Thank you, Sir.
Fantastic tutorial!👍👍
Thanks so much for watching AJJ W
Fantastic Richard, very educational and not overly complicated. I use Affinity Photo rather than PhotoShop but most of these techniques translate straight across. Might need to do a bit more research into the translation of the star minimalisation technique. Looking forward to working thru the rest of this series.
Thanks for watching Greg .. really appreciate that. I'll be keen to see how you get on with Affinity.
Another great video -- thanks. At 9:10 you say you don't find dark frames very useful, and you're right, if you're blending in a foreground like in this video. But if you keep your foreground, you'll be glad you used a few dark frames to eliminate hot pixels which hide among the stars but stand out in a foreground. And those nasty little things are so tedious to remove in Lightroom.
At 11:10 you mention Sequator's inability to zoom in to help with masking, but remember that in Windows, you can zoom in on your entire desktop (I don't know if Mac has that ability). This greatly helps when masking a challenging foreground such as trees, and is useful elsewhere -- so useful that I keep it pinned to my taskbar for easy access. The utility is called Magnifier.
Great job on lighting, again. You are a master at lighting foregrounds for nightscapes, which is what got me to subscribe in the first place. If you ever make it western Nevada or the eastern Sierra, you might consider a stop at The International Car Forest in Goldfield, Nevada. I bet you could spend several nights playing with lighting the vehicles there, but in mid-season, as hills block part of the sky.
I really appreciate your insight into the various aspects of photography my friend. You are absolutely correct about the hot pixels and it's great advice. I love your suggestion about zooming in on the desktop .. I'll keep that one in mind for next time. Thanks so much for contributing to the video .. means a lot.
More excellent work. Hey, Darrell, Mike from Tulsa.
Thanks so much for watching again Mike, really appreciate it.
Awesome video Richard... Really inspired
Thanks a lot for watching Santosh and for leaving a comment.
What an amazing final image! Thank you for another great tutorial.
Thank you so much for watching, really appreciated.
Thank you for making all this complicated stuff start to make sense! It's pure magic watching you turn these individual images into a masterpiece, one clearly explained step at a time! This video was so much fun to watch. Fantastic series! You are a natural born teacher so I'm not surprised all your 2020 workshops are already filled!
I'm so pleased you like the videos Paula, and I really appreciate your kind words of encouragement.
Watching your video has helped me out a lot I started this early summer here in the USA taking photos of flowers insects sunsets. then I have found night photography. I fell in love with it takeing those hard shots with a lot of light pultion around. doing my best what i have so far i have been using a Canon 50mm f1.8 lens it is the only one that goes that far.
Good on you Robby for getting out there to shoot. It always takes a while to get into the groove of nightscape photography but I'm sure you're enjoying the ride.
Just great Richard
Once again I very much appreciate your encouragement Les.
Excellent wrap up to a fantastic series and I'll definitely be looking back at these videos as I progress in nightscape photography. I thoroughly enjoyed the series and the production value was top notch. Until next time..
Thanks so much again Keith. I really do appreciate your support.
Richard this is awesome. The final image is stunning, but your editing techniques are fantastic. Especially the star minimization. I also appreciate your fitting reference to the editing process being an art. It's so true! Thanks so much for sharing your talents. I enjoy your videos very much, and apply your tips on a regular basis. You have made my hobby much more fun by sharing your experiences!

A great series and a great teacher. Photo Filter: Instead of clicking onto the colour panel. Click onto the H.S.B. buttons and move the double arrows up or down for a more precise selection. Keep yourself safe from the fires!
Awesome tip CARAMAL. Thanks so much for watching.

Great job it was a fun series of videos to watch. It would be cool if you came to the US and did some nightsscapes here. I think you may be able to turn that into a few different videos. Would be nice to see how you plan the shots here and what you come up with. Anyways look forward to the next one.
Thanks a lot Eric, always appreciate your comments. Maybe one day I'll visit the US
Well done mate I really really enjoy all your video’s and most important thing I learned a lot thanks again mate
I'm really pleased you like it Vigen. Thanks so much.
Great video Richard. I learned much more from watching this for a second time, after the farm workshop. I notice many more of the PS tips and techniques (sky "S" curve, photo filter, adjustment layers star minimisation/softening) sinking in. Much easier to absorb and appreciate after having now attempted a few nightscape images. Thanks!
Thanks a lot Jeff. Yes I agree that it takes a while to sink in. Repeating the steps on a consistent basis is the key.
