ð Welcomeð
My name is Niki. I am a former high school chemistry & biology public school teacher turned homeschool mom of 4 kiddos. We are a secular homeschooling family, with a laid back schooling style. I'm a busy WAHM who just tries to stay afloat some days. But we would never change a thing!
I would love to get to know you better down in the comments, and I hope you'll stay awhile and chat âĪïļ

We started our school year last Monday, and by the end of the week I already had to change our language arts unit. My kiddos did not like the book that I bought a unit study for. That unit was supposed to carry us all through the first nine weeks of school. So I had to make some changes and reorganize.
Love that you listened to them and changed things up! Hope the new book you choose goes better for you guys!
Oh girrrrrrrl this is the real right there. âIs it actually best for herâ the question I ask allllllll the time! Itâs so easy for us to pick our choice but is it their best choice.
Yup!! I had to be honest with myself. But I'm glad I was she already seems more excited just from us picking our first topics for history and science. Here's to hoping it goes well! LOL
@@Homeschoolology I feel this. When I included Molly in our decisions of switching back to things she is one hundred percent more interested in starting and doing school
@@blessedhomeschoolmess I'm so glad to hear that! Yay!!
Definitely the right choice!
Thanks for the vote of confidence!
Love this! Great reminder that our plans arenât always best for our kids!
Thanks! It was a tough choice, but something just kept nagging at me, so I knew I had to bite the bullet and do it. Thanks for the vote of confidence!
It's so hard to reevaluate, especially when we're already invested in a plan. Kudos to you! I'm sure your daughter will really appreciate this and be more invested. Hope y'all have a fantastic year!
Thank you for the vote of confidence! I can already tell she is a bit more interested.
I love the honesty and transparency you bring in this video. Iâm right there with you, listening to what works for our kids and running with it - not easy but ultimately I feel they learn and retain more when we follow their lead. Looking forward to how this progresses for you as Iâm walking this same road right now. Youâve got this ððž
I'm so happy you enjoyed it. I strive to be as honest as I can without oversharing. LOL. I really am trying to listen to my kiddos more this year. Hope you guys find something that helps you have the most successful year possible.
Thank you so much for this! This is exactly the same situation Iâm in. My son is starting 9th grade as well. I had everything planned out too and then I started debating on the curriculum. We were going to do biology as well. I decided to ask my son if heâd actually like that. He usually just says âI donât careâ or âwhatever worksâ. He has no interest in doing biology. He mentioned possibly doing chemistry. So now Iâm starting from scratch and have no idea what to do. Most chemistry curriculums want them to complete algebra 1 first. ð
Chemistry is quite a bit of math at the high school level. I agree with the recommendation of completing Algebra 1 first. But you could totally do something like kitchen chemistry to get ready for the concepts!
Good for you for listening to your gut and making some changes! I know I'm glad I did.
@@Homeschoolology thatâs such a great idea!! Thank you so much!
@@Ibyte8256 You're very welcome!
I'm new and absolutely love this. Way to go. You're a great mom
Welcome!! So glad you are here! Thank you for the vote of confidence! You made my day ð
Oooo! You should have her browse Layers of Learning! They sell units separately and they do generally dovetail together, so she could pick and choose the units she is interested in.
Oh whoops I didnât watch the rest of your video where you mention Build your library and Layers of learning not working for you guys hahaha ð nevermind!
I think if I used Homeschool Planet to pre-plan, that it might work better for us. Thanks for the suggestion all the same. Sometimes we just need to hear things from other people. LOL
Sounds so familiar, I had everything planned out ready to go then when it came down to it, I switched it ALL! ðŪ we are going for a more simplified year ð
I agree with that sentiment! I'm trying to make things a little simpler and more fun.
@@Homeschoolology Me too! I'm actually more excited about LoL now than I was my first plan anyways ðĪŠ
@@tracydababseh nice!
If you go the Layers of Learning route, you can let her choose the units, explorations, and library books & videos. Since she's in highschool its geared more towards independent study at that point. The only hard part is to make sure to have the supplies for the explorations ðļ but that's like every curriculum anyways ð
That's a great idea! Thanks for sharing! I'm not thrilled with having a little more work on my end, but I really want my kiddos to enjoy learning. It will be worth it in the end! Thanks for sharing!
Will be home schooling our son while we travel around the US so enjoy this content!
Wonderful!! Learning through travel is one of our favorite ways to learn. I hope you guys have a wonderful year!
@@Homeschoolology thank you so much! âšïļ
My 8th grade daughter is doing a research project for social studies and she thanked me for asking her to as sheâs obsessed with Japanese culture so I asked her to add in history and geography of Japan!!! I agree that kids should learn how they want to!!!i often donât know how homeschooling will look like till we get to a topic as well!!! I love it!!! I love seeing my kids learn the best way for them!!! I do a lot of planning and then make it open and go!!! As I buy a lot of digital curriculum I donât buy a curriculum till we are close to using it!!!
I'm hoping the new online planner is going to help me have flexibility, but all also pre-plan. ðĪðĪðĪ Thanks for sharing your experiences!
Excited to watch
I know we are in similar boats. LOL
I think layers of learning would work. Instead of starting from the beginning just pick what she is interested in and use them like unit studies. The LOL Facebook group helped us a lot get in the groove of how to make it flow. If sheâs not that into something she can spend less time on it and if itâs a subject she likes she can do a deeper dive into the topic and do more explorations.
Thanks for the suggestion! The list is adding up of people who recommend LoL.
We start 9th this year as well. I have asked my son for input, but he is just the type that doesn't give a strong opinion. But i know he does better with shorter units of study. We tried year long topics the past few years and everything just felt a bit off. Entering HS I struggle with how to do unit study type learning while also creating courses for transcripts. That is my biggest hang up. If we want to study WWII then bounce over to European culture and geography, then some American history, then who knows whatð how do I create a course from that for a transcript? That worry is what is holding me back from doing our preferred unit study style learning.
I agree. That was part of my struggle as well. If you think of something, let me know. And I'll be sure to update if I come up with a plan. LOL
@@Homeschoolology if you find a resource or input with advice for that type of learning I would love to hear what you find out.
@@SmithsInTheMaking absolutely!!
Haha same ð
