Im on my 4th Grand Prix GT. All have been 2003 years models. First 2 was the GTP
I had a '01 sold it at 350,000mi. Great motor. Ran through 3 transmissions though.

Pontiac has been experimenting with turbos and superchargers on the Grand Prix, since they went fwd in 88! Again lack of advertising and promotion, kept these cars in low volume. The average person does not know about the GTP and GXP models. Same as the Trans Am WS6,WS7 and the Fire Hawk. General Motors biggest problem is lack of advertising and listening to enthusiasts!

I had a friend in high school who had a GTP. He put cams and a torque converter and it would do burnouts all the way down the street. Nice car overall

@@aaronhires8620they only came in front wheel drive. the LS4s were transverse 5.3s only, none came rear wheel
There’s one for sale near me. Back then it was the GTP vs Maxima SE (manual). Both were pretty quick, but the Nissan Maxima was the only available in a manual and it probably costed a little more. I think the maximum was faster than the Pontiac since Pontiac only offered the Grand Prix with a 4 speed auto. I was probably in middle school around this time. My sister’s boyfriend had a red Grand Prix with black leather interior. These cars are nostalgia for me. With some tuning and minor upgrades, a Nissan Maxima could actually out perform a heavier Grand Prix GXP.
Autos are faster than manual so that doesn't really make sense
@@TTime685 Not in the early 2000s. Most torque converter autos were slow shifting slugs and they robbed the engines of power and mpg. This is why most Mustangs and Camaros were purchased manuals. Check out the old Motorweek reviews, they even complained that the automatics got slower track times than the manuals. It required engine power to operate those old things, almost like giant gear driven engine accessory.
@@EricFortuneJr. First of all Camaros and Mustangs are muscle cars so people prefer a manual in general.. Plus you could program those old autos and install shift kits. You have to be flawless with a manual to outrun any auto, even back then.
@@TTime685 You had to modify an auto in order to improve its performance, that proves my original point. The same person can drive two of the same make/model and still get a better quarter mile time with the older manuals vs older automatics. An 03 Maxima with the manual would hit 60mph in 6.2 seconds. A Maxima with 4 speed was slower with about 6.5-6.7 seconds. The GTP was 6.6-7.0 seconds. The 04 Maxima was heavier so it was a bit slower, but the 6 speed manual still hit 60 in 6.3-6.5 seconds. Automatics did continue to evolve and improve from the factory so there are some decent 0-60 times from the mid to late 2000s. Now we have 10 speed Mustangs, Camaros and 8 speed Challengers. Today it’s a different ballgame because the factory tuning and different drive modes can cater to performance or fuel economy.

You just described my dream build. Ive owned multiple grand ams and such the like. I love yhe 3000 series engines that gm produced back then but that ls is a dream
In 06 & 07 they didn't give any Grand Prix the GTP Badge but instead treated the GT's as GTP's. Had all the bells and whistles including being Supercharged. I bought my 2006 GT in 09 and it still runs excellent. Keep it clean too

The v8 FWD Pontiacs are fun. Worked at a trans shop and obviously it was there for that reason. Once it was done though I got to test drive it. I didn't drive it like I wanted but I sent it around some corners at a higher speed than required and it was a blast.
Unfortunately that’s where they all end up. Gm should have used the transmission from the norstar fwd caddies.
@@bmacster1985 it was an absolute shit design anyway from a casement standpoint too. The bellhousing bolt that's fuckin hidden between the trans body and the engine sucks ass to get to. Trying to do it blind with a 3 ft extension is worse since there's no way to get to it from the front.

@@bmacster1985 yeah I wish I knew before I tried pulling the trans off 😂 also they run some power steering lines on the subframe so if you aren't careful you'll rip the lines clean out

I have a 2004 Impala SS Indy edition and I’ve always driven RWD or AWD and honestly it feels more powerful in FWD the torque is WILD bone stock too
I miss my old GTP, LF4 injectors, and 1.75in pulley. Also a few other mods I don't remember. When all was said and done I was beating Z06s of the same year. Good times.
Come on man, Z06’s. Maybe a regular c4 automatic vette with no mods
@bmacster1985 dynoed it back in 03. Made about 457hp. You may forget, but the 3800 motor was put into a car that was the fasted front wheel drive car in the world. It may sound far-fetched, but they were very formidable cars.
@@MatthewSmith-du5dy I’m sorry but the series II or III 3800 even with the smallest pully, the biggest injectors, full exhaust is not making 450hp on a dnyo. I’m not trying to call you out, but when I was in college in 2017, one of my fellow students in my engine tunning class built up his 01 regal gs (same car basically) we did 42# injectors, the zz performance cam and springs, underdrive pully’s, custom exhaust, a stage 2 zz performance intercooler and core, and had the heads and blower sent out to a local machine shop to port and polish. All said and done on our classes mustang dyno he made a little of 340hp to the front wheels, doesn’t sound like much but that’s close to 380 or so to the wheels. He could not keep up with my 96 NA cobra, all it had done was headers, C.A.I, cat back exhaust, and 3.73 gears. I couldn’t keep up with stock c5 corvettes let alone a z06. They made 405hp and weight like 2,800 - 2,900 lbs.
@@MatthewSmith-du5dy you have to realize the Eaton m60 on the 3800’s even ported and polished is only good for about 10 or 11 lbs of boost max. 450hp maybe if you added a 100 to 150 shot of nitrous, but I have heard the 3800 sc’s don’t do well with nitrous
@bmacster1985 Np man. All I can say is you had to be there. I personally know people that were getting sub 10 second 1/4 miles. Granted those were turbo setups, but not out of the realm of possibility.

ive got a 2006 grand prix gxp. its a cool car. sitting at 89,000 miles. trans still shifts pretty good.

Had a 02 Grand Prix gt 40th anniversary edition. Fun car
took my road tests in them and got my permit. My dad had supercharged GTP's from like 1998-2005
My grandmother had one of these all black and she ain’t really know what it was when me and my cousin use to explain it she just would smile and say “I don’t know what none of that mean but the thang is snazzy and I’m never late to work” she loved it and they tried to repo it from her twice lol she still talk about that car like she just got it
I did a bit of research, and there is potential for an awd swap on these cars if you go with the 6t80 instead of the 4t80.
It’s almost better to strip the supercharger off the 3.8 and throw turbo on

I miss my Pontiac's. I've had Pontiac's love them all. I had 86 Sunbird(stolen and torched), 88 Grand Am(head gasket blown), 92 Grand Am(head gasket blown), Almost bought a gold 99 Grand Prix GTP, but instead got the 99 Grand Prix GT (threw rod). Then had 2nd kid bought a mini van.

I actually owned one of the gxp it was a beast of a front wheel drive car fast and nimble was able to hit 140 easily the transmission was complete dookie held that car back the most imo had a lot of room and when u put subs in them it slams harder then a snow bunny on a old rich man
Got a 05 bonneville gxp. That thang is a tank, and quick. Transmission went 58,000. Now it’s sitting out front waiting for a new transmission. Going to take your advice on this lol.

I heard one of these accelerating next to me at a green light last night. I was like BRUH did I just hear a dang supercharger in a Grand Prix?? The back had a V8 badge too, which I couldn’t believe. But yeah, apparently this is a thing!! Who’d have thought?
I'm pretty damn happy with my 04 grand prix GTP, and with my 3.4in pulley it's pretty damn quick
I have one. It's supercharger whine and instant torque inside a sleeper 4 door makes it the coolest car that I've owned.
I had to pass up on a GTP several years ago, because it had begun breathing its own coolant. Would love to see how much I could wring out of one with a turbo setup. The GXP is basically a rebodied Impala SS from the same area. Tell the transmission I said "goodbye".
I just seen a grand prix gxp with the ls4 the other day with a big turbo strapped to it at a car meet. Thing makes 500 to the wheels aparently

I had an 03 Pontiac gtp solid red to be a front wheel drive it was definitely a force to be reckoned with
He's not lying about the torque steer. I have to hold tight to control my GTP and I haven't done any mods to add more HP yet.
also on the LS4- you need to get an AFM disabler. That will fix reliability issues with the engine

I had this exact model. Same color and all. Repaired the transmission once.
I never knew till my buddy was telling me about my 98Buick park avenue ultra was basically the same car just different badges. And that by that year they fixed the over heating issues.
Impala ss Monte Carlo ss and Buick supra from 05 to 09 all have fwd ls4

Gtp was my first car and first heartbreak.
So they have that plug and play all-wheel-drive set up for the Civics and Accords. It just has to hook to go on the side where the long CV axle is, and use a short CV axle. That way it still is the right length out to the Wheel from the transmission. I wonder if that kit could be modified for this?
I used to have a 1994 Grand Prix four-door, and a 1994 Grand Am GT with a 3.3, both which had chips in them. The Grand-Am ended up breaking the tail shaft off the transmission. And that Grand Prix was so goddamn fast, you could be sitting at a light and stomped the gas, and it would just sit there and smoke two front tires with and barely move for about 15 seconds..
Both of them jokers was fast as all get-out!

I beat the snot outta the 97 & 07, never had an issue with the tranny somehow which is crazy. I knew others with basically the same setups in either a Monte or in a Regal gs that drove like driving Mrs Daisy and theirs blew up😮 maybe i was just Lucky? 🤞🏾 I did always have issues with the power steering going out though. I do miss my ol Pontiacs, i own an awd Kia Stinger gt now. Definitely much nicer/faster than my old Pontiacs but i still miss em.

Had an 01 Buick Regal Supercharged
The thing is, you can’t find these cars around anymore without it being beat up. The transmissions are so fragile same with the same gen impala SS. You would have to spend like 8 to 12 grand to get one of these cars that are actually not beat up and in great condition. That’s really bad about these cars is the rot you let it sit up here and it just rots away really bad.

I had silver gxp lowered on wheels abs exhaust. That car legitimately turned heads, I loved that thing but the transmission issues are real. Idk how many times I had transmission issues.

I agree...the 3.8L was an indestructible engine and put a blower on it made a world of difference but, don't forget that Ford showed their asses first with the Thunderbird Super Coupe with their 3.8L supercharger
