yard machines rear wheel tractor hubs have the same drive too. this makes me curious what spindle toros time cutter 30" push mowers use. never changed the blades on one yet. garage door hardware uses 5/16 self tappers that are great, i even use them on 1/4" trailer frame steel, you just have to go easy on them after they punch thru or you break the heads off if you over tighten. they never used to have that problem until garage door companies started buying them from chy-na in the early 2000's. no drill bit or lube needed.
I love when Elkskins gives Taryl a hard time.. too cute... he has such a sweet personality Taryl.. I love that you got new sneakers Love the vintage mower
Ha Elkskins did a good job on this one!!! I would love to work at Mr. Dactyl's shop. I could learn and be entertained all at the same time!!! Always great camera work fellas. Thank you !!
Shirt with FIRE IT UP please... Also something from Daryl 3 Chains “music” video??? I THINK it’s uncle Eddy?? “It’s giving me a FUSS, it’s spittn’ out dust” I started saying that to my self every time I’m sharpening a chain, but for some reason I say it in your elkskins voice, haha. Thank you for everything you guys do!!!
@@johnnellis3025 David Bradley, I don't think so, but you can probably research it online. I know I had a points coil for a saw by them, it was worth big bucks. HOP is, yes.
Very good guys! I like it. Best part, as I watch I’m drinking coffee from my TFA mug that arrived yesterday, in its little box with Taryl’s face on it.
Thank you! I have a 68 Custom 10XL and a 1972 Custom 10E that both need blades. Just ordered 4 hubs. I'm going to experiment a bit with blades. Gona put Gator mulching blades on 1 tractor and Hi lift bagging blades on the other. I'm also going drill and tap the holes but I would like to weld nuts on the back side of the hub since those hubs are mild steel but I'll have to see how much space there is once the hubs are on the spindles. Those old timed decks mow really nice.
they sure do mow good. this deck used in video is messed up but it cut beautiful. i got another 38 inch deck i am going to combine the 2 and make 1 good deck out of the 2 very hard to find these 38 inch steel decks i have a few 36 inch decks lol
I’m really enjoying the old lawn/garden tractor restorations. Those units were sturdy and well built. Maybe a few minutes on the transaxles and where stuff was built could be interesting. Great stuff.
I literally just mowed with my brand new Toro 3000... over 48 inches high grass and I DON'T KNOW HOW I'VE SURVIVED THIS LONG WITHOUT THIS BEAUTIFUL MACHINE! I'M IN LOVE! 💘
Taryl, another awesome episode. Thanks. Request: Can you show a short video of how the lift gate on your white truck works? I need something similar and can’t have a trailer where I live.
Wow, I am a fan of the old model gravely equipment and never got into the Sears machines from back in the '60s and 70s to much but this machine is an exception after seeing it cutting grass in this video and it is nice ... It would bring a pretty nice price,, if it ever came up for sale
not for sale. my dad and i done alot of work on it since i pulled it out of the junkyard in 2013. its a customized build i did with him. theres some videos here and there on my channel of it. sadly my dad past in 2017 between this sears and his wheel horse they mean alot to me. but i do have other sears for sale on facebook but not has nice looking
@@Elkskinsmowerjunkyard I subscribed to your channel earlier today and sorry to hear about your dad and that's the same year my mom passed away in March of 2017... I kept two her vehicles that I could never sell and a Gravely 812 Riding Mower that her and my dad bought many years ago and she would go out and mow with it once in awhile. That's nice machine you have there and I don't think I've ever seen one in that model before, until seeing this video...
I have one of these. Restored it completely. The first time I used it , I hit something the kids left in the yard, and exploded one of the gear boxes. Then I used a regular deck from a Suburban 3 blade. Had to fab the front mule head pulley setup.
Those universal blades are also available from Atlas which is a line of parts from MTD. I also saw some universal blades in one of the catalogues the other day, I can't remember which one. It was one of the 3 Rotary, Stens or Oregon.
Have you done a review of the Ballard dual blade adaptors? I put them on the 52” deck on my Toro 522xi. If the engine isn’t fully warmed up it kills when I turn on the PTO switch. About 4-5 years ago a local mower mechanic bypassed the safety switches without asking me. What I can do to start the deck is to release the mule drive tensioner lever, turn on the PTO then get off the seat and engage the mule drive tensioner lever and then it works.
WHEN THINGS WERE BUILT TO LAST I bought a new Honda push mower. Back in shop. Valves rapping away from first cut. 3 weeks no mower. Bought a walk behind 48”Scag hydro. Blowing belts 3 times. Back to dealer. ALL JUNK TODAY!!!!
Lock washer on those blade bolts too since no nut on the backside? Neat idea'er. I haven't worked on the Ford YT-16's blades yet, so wondering what hack a billy will be needed for those when the time comes. Rreminds me on some days adding the John Deere or Cub Cadet style anti-scalp front wheels to some of the other decks. Then again... grading/dragging/leveling the yard flat too isn't a bad idea either. Fun with ants and whatever wants to heave. Whatever... Thanks for sharing!
its always fun to have someone around the shop to irritate. i have cut many blades down and re-balanced to fit weird /old stuff. zip wheel cuts blades quick.
Could you just take a hacksaw to the universal blase insert (looks like a thin walled washer with little nubs on two sides), removing the sides with the nubs leaving you with a set of small "keys" each with a couple nubs on it, and use them to lock the blade onto that oval/rectangular shaft, keeping it all sandwiched in place with washers/nuts? I could see where the above idea may just look like it would work from the camera angles, and may not work if the these "keys" created were too soft/wrong metal for use under such stresses/pressures, but outside of blade engagement and when you hit something hard/cut thick grass/etc. they would seem to be well enough to work. Was this ever a consideration? If so, what stopped you from going that route? Stresses? parts didn't fit? Great Video! God bless.
I just recently got a sears custom 6hp. How to I keep the deck pto handle engaged? I believe I’m missing a piece but unsure what it is that locks the handle down. Thanks I’m advance for any information

They really make it entertaining like you do , well they may be a little nuttier.
Elk skins is a wealth of information. You are both really down to earth good guys!
Great tips for us who want to keep our older and better equipment running.
Enjoy seeing an old tractor actually mow, and boy-howdy it really throws the grass. 👍
That thing worked great! Very cool seeing old machines still being able to work as hard as they did when brand new.
Elkskins was hilarious messing with Taryl with the Impact drill
Made me bust out laughing 😆 🤣 😂

Now that is a nice tractor! I subscribed to Elkskins channel. It’s great.
It's great just to see an old classic still running.
Love collaborations!
Roper, AYP, HOP, same company, different owners. Many Sears mowers were made by them. You two make a great team; humorous, too.
David Bradley in the very early years.
Are they still in business? They used to make all sorts of things, mostly for sears as i remember.

I have one of those mower decks and need blades. Cant find original ones. This helps me out so much
Team work makes the dream work!
Nice job Boys!
I own a 1969 Craftsman 10hp mower. I will definitely use this strategy on my Craftsman.
Great fix! Mows nice. Hmmm didn't know Elkskins had a channel...Think I'll follow that build. Great video for sure, thanks Taryl.
Dig it👍👍👍👍👍👍 I used to have one of these years ago I got in pieces and it worked really great once we got her all together and got her going
That's the fastest I've seen Taryl open a door!
Last week I replaced the head gasket on my mower. I learned it all from you Taryl! Thank you and keep making these great funny videos!
I love Elf Skin. It's my favorite kind a skin.
Great job Elk Skin!!! Fire it up, Fire it up.

Good teamwork!
This was funnier then anything on tv !..thanks for the laughs
Nice hack. I will be needing this
Good solution. You guys are great !
I've been wrong about people before but Elk Skins seems like a really good guy.
I'd love to hear his singing voice.

That old Sears needs one of my Yanmar l70s in it. That old sears paint looks pretty good still, I would love just left it as is.

If you dont have an air hammer.. I put a G clamp on the deck to act as a stop to prevent the blade turning when you use a regular wrench.
I’m looking for the tires on the front of that mower. I like that look. Where can you find them?
and i as well
“Walker Texas Ranger Hub!” Lol
Sweet!
