    I have a 2006 Honda Ridgeline and it was giving me a Service Engine light and threw a PO420 code. I listened to your video and drove my car for about an hour and then revved the engine a few times at my final destination. I'm glad to say that it worked! The code cleared and I will do this regularly to keep my cat clear. Thank you for this video.

    This really works. After too many short journeys, delicate driving and a period on inactivity, my VW Touran displayed a flashing glow plug fault followed by an emissions control/ engine management fault, subsequently the car went into limp mode. Getting the engine up to temperature and turning the ignition off and back on took me out of limp mode and left me with just the emission warning light. 20mins plus of high revs, in my case 4,000/4,500 rpms in third gear fixed all warning lights once the car was re-started after my trip. Peter Finn, top man! :)

    'Italian tune-up!' No, really, folks, this method will work because the converter is running hotter at higher RPM's and therefore burning out all the carbon build up. It also 'blows out' the motor, meaning the crud on the valves and combustion chambers gets burned out at the same time.

      In a tractor you have to do a regeneration to clear the exhaust and you park the tractor and it revs at high rpms & temp for about 45mins and it clears the exhaust. So it makes sense. Look up how a regen works on a tractor

    New subscriber here, Peter. I came here looking for help for my 2010 Nissan Maxima with 97,000 miles on it. It was at a Nissan dealership service dept. for over 2 months, idling at 4000 rpm. That is not even why I took the car in. I took it in because the crankshaft sensor needed replacing. THEN, it began to idle at 4000 rpm! They "think" they fixed that problem, although they aren't really sure how they did it. But, the "service engine" light came on on the drive home. Immediately took it back and they said the code was for both catalytic converters! Going to try your method and see what happens. Thanks for sharing your "know-how" with us!

      The next day I bought a can of seafoam and I didn't expect anything but two days later surprisingly the code disappeared then i passed the smog with flying colors!

    • @Wes_5kyph1
      @Wes_5kyph1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      No, it can't damage your engine if it's kept below the redline & your engine is otherwise working properly. It just scares people because they're not used to hearing the engine so loud, so they assume it's bad and stressing the engine. Most cars auto-transmission are designed/programmed to stay below 3000rpm to keep it quiet, but this never allows it to get hot enough in the engine to burn off carbon and clean the cat. It's like cleaning heat-cleaning an oven.

    Is it okay to go 10 minutes one way and 10 minutes back? Or do you have to go 20 minutes straight? Seems like the catalytic converter would not cool off. Just turning around there at the end.

    Hi Peter, so the high-revs & lacquer thinner did not work, so I just replaced the catalytic converter (myself) & now all is good (no more CEL) & more power & mpg on the 2009 2.4L Camry w/ 357,000 miles.
    Q:
    When you down-shift w/ automatic using shift-lever; should you give more gas-pedal as you down-shift, like w/manual-transmission, so the revs match?

      Well, that's what the 'red-line' is for... keep it out of redline and if your AT is otherwise healthy, it won't overheat... between 4-5000 rpm should not overheat anything and your engine temp may actually get a little cooler from the higher exhaust flow

    • @jamesd2482
      @jamesd2482 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I assume the higher the gear the better as you want the engine under load. Could be an issue depending on transmission type. My car only has low, drive and overdrive. In other words 1st, 3rd and 4th gear are my only choices. I would have to do this in drive because overdrive would be going way to fast and low would be too slow with less load.

    Just high revs ain't help you that much. You also need a decent load which means (depending on your car) high speeds or several strong accelerations where you can rev the first 3 gears to redline. This method like in the video with high revs and low load is just heating up your valves for nothing :S

      No, won't hurt the transmission. That's more likely to happen when downshifting in order to engine-brake - or revving the car in neutral while stopped and then putting it in drive like many idiots do -- not for accelerating or just maintaining a higher-than-normal rpm.

      Cats don't fully fire off till 500-800F temperature and can run over 1500F with combustible gasses burning in them. The RPM's is really the only way to heat the thing up beyond 500F when it isn't burning on its own (clogged or silted in where the noble metals used in them cannot contact the super heated air/leftover fuel/combustible gasses). This heating causes expansion during this process and contraction after it cools separates the clog/silt from the media and burns any hydrocarbons or oil in the clog/silt thus shrinking them in size. After that process of cooling some fast high revs on the next start up should push some of the clogs free allowing the noble metals to contact the air flow again so it can then operate as intended thus heating up to over 1000F and possibly heating still clogged areas and helping clean them more. If the vehicle is burning oil it will clog quickly again. I wouldn't advise 20minutes at 4000rpm in the driveway to many things can go wrong. 3000 rpm down the road for 20minute trip should do the trick and be easier on the engine and cooling system.
